Pontypridd 37-24 Cross Keys-23-11-2012
Pontypridd enjoyed plenty of early possession but failing to make any real impact on the gain line and unable to breach the opposition twenty-two line. It was from that line that Ponty outside half Dai Flanagan drilled over a penalty with eight minutes gone, and as Cross Keys continued to infringe, then repeating the act with a simple kick in front of the posts. Having shown plenty of aggression if not much finesse Ponty had been well on top in the early exchanges but then retreated to soak up a phase of pressure. Cross Keys made good headway into the home twenty-two but failing to capitalise on an overlap wide out, eventually settling for a penalty kicked by replacement outside half Dorian Jones. Ponty responded with a concerted attack, instigated by a dynamic break by winger Lewis Williams and culminating in a penalty kicked by Dai Flanagan, with twenty-nine minutes gone. Keys then turned the game on its head with two opportunist scores in quick succession. Centre Leon Andrews rounded off a sweeping foray down the flank, and winger Elliot Jones then touching down after a kick and rush counter, Dean Gunter converting both scores. Ponty pressed forward, with Keys again reverting to infringing tactics and having lock Ollie Hodge sin binned in the process. Sustained pressure by the home side was rewarded with points as Dai Flanagan stroked over a close range penalty to bring up an interval scoreline of 12pts to 17. The home team set up a series of mauls and drives to ...

Pontypridd Youth v Beddau Youth
Pontypridd Youth made it two wins from two at home in the Blues A league this season with a fine 11pts to 8 victory over near rivals Beddau on Saturday 27th October. The close scoreline somewhat flattered the visitors in a contest that certainly warranted the old cliché of a game of two halves. The hosts effectively controlled all aspects of the early play and looked to have the game and their opponents in their pocket within the first quarter. A well struck James Nicholas penalty with only two minutes on the clock came after blindside flanker Nathan Wyle comfortably marshalled a break from the Beddau scrum-half and drew a penalty at the breakdown and straight from the re-start the menacingly impressive Steffan Jenkins took the ball on the full and ran straight through the heart of the Beddau pack to the opposing 10 metre line again causing the visitors to offend at the tackle. The positional penalty kick to the visitors' twenty-two was taken cleanly and marched all the way to the Beddau line with hard-working lock Jordan Eynon eventually smuggling the ball over in the corner. The Pontypridd pack showed plenty of passion and desire for the contest as well as more cohesion than normal and with Beddau threatening little with ball in hand only stubborn defence and a number of unforced Pontypridd errors kept the visitors in the tie. A succession of forceful drives by Jenkins and hooker Scott Pickering deep into opposition territory set a solid platform from which stand-in fly ...

Neath v Pontypridd 29-09-2012
Pontypridd drew first blood straight from the kick off as fly-half Dai Flanagan hoisted over a penalty. The home team responded with a period of pressure and drew level through a Dai Langdon penalty. Both teams were wrestling possession in the loose making for a competitive start to the game. It was Ponty again who took the initiative, driving into the home twenty-two then showing good continuity to put winger Matthew Nuthall over in the corner, the conversion from Flanagan rebounding in off the post. From the restart Ponty struck again as no8 Dan Godrey instigated a dynamic break, well supported for flanker Wayne O'Connor to cross for another try, converted by Flanagan. A Neath repost was rebuffed but following a spate of fighting between the opposing forwards, home flanker Emyr Williams shown a straight red card by referee Ian Davies. Ponty were keen to maintain momentum, winger Nuthall spearheading another offensive before Dai Flanagan slotted over two penalties in succession to emphasise his side's superiority. A frenetic end to the first half saw Neath apply concerted pressure to their opponents' line, centre Gareth McCarthy going over for a close range try which Langdon converted, before Dai Flanagan retaliated with another penalty to give Pontypridd an interval advantage of 10pts to 26. The second half started as had the first, Dai Flanagan putting over an early penalty for Ponty. Neath responded by driving up to the visitors' line, the Ponty defence holding out ...

Cross Keys V Pontypridd -01-09-2012
Having taken the game to their opponents during the opening exchanges it was Cross Keys who broke the deadlock through a Dean Gunter penalty with just three minutes gone. Ponty almost conceded further points as Keys' lock Danny Hodge intercepted and charged upfield but the visitors holding out and then launching a counter offensive at pace. The game as yet had not achieved any continuity with errors blighting the flow of play, and tensions breaking out into a series of fist fights between the opposing forwards. Both captains were lectured by referee James Jones and Danny Hodge duly dispatched to the sin bin. Dai Flanagan hoisted over the ensuing penalty to draw Ponty level. Ponty were attempting to up the tempo of the game and edged into the lead as Flanagan put over another well struck penalty, but the contest remaining largely at a deadlock. The visitors finally showed some cohesion with a sustained period of pressure and centre Gavin Dacey breaking through for a try which Flanagan converted. As lively scrum half Gareth James fashioned another break Ponty were now in the ascendancy, going into the interval holding a lead of 3pts to 13. The second half started evenly contested as Keys launched a snap offensive but Ponty second row Craig Locke stealing possession, wing Owen Jenkins spearheading a counter and after some fine support play, prop Chris Phillips charging over for a try which Flanagan again converted. The home team were guilty of serially infringing, their ...

Pontypridd V Llantrisant - 10 August 2012
Pontypridd 64-13 Llantrisant Pontypridd ran up an emphatic 64pts to 13 win over a battling Llantrisant team in their second pre-season warm up game. Following a series of drives Ponty sent winger Gareth Wyatt over for an early corner flag try, but Llantrisant then showing plenty of forward power to gain territory and allow full back Lewis Montague to slot over two penalties in quick succession. A break by debutant lock Dafydd Davies gave Ponty some momentum upfield with second row partner Chris Dicomidis up in support to score. The home team now sought to up the tempo of the game, quick hands along the back line setting up winger Owen Jenkins for a try which Dai Flanagan converted. Undeterred Llantrisant drove hard into the Ponty defence, Jamie Joyce charging over for a try which Montague converted. It was Ponty who finished the first half the stronger, scrum half Carl Thomas burrowing over for a try and Owen Jenkins then cruising in for another touchdown, both scores converted by Flanagan for an interval lead of 38pts to 13. A whole raft of changes made during the break inevitably cost Ponty their momentum, and with errors made to compound their frustration. It was winger Owen Williams who finall broke the deadlock with a try wide out. Llantrisant continued to contest gamely for possession and territory, but Ponty gradually settling back into their rhythm as the game drew to a close. Late scores claimed by wingers Harry Davies and Matthew Nuthall and back rower Jordan ...

Carmarthen Quins 16-24 Pontypridd -15-09-2012
Pontypridd gained a foothold in the home half through the probing kicks of outside half Dai Flanagan during what was a cautious opening to the game. It was Flanagan who opened the scoring, slotting over a penalty with six minutes gone. The Quins responded with a phase of attack, but Ponty coping well and then countering through full back Geraint Walsh. The visitors were still edging the contest territorially but neither try line as yet threatened during the first quarter of an hour. It was a tale of two kickers as Dai Flanagan hoisted over another two penalties whilst his opposite number James Dixon missed two attempts at goal. A change of kicker eventually allowed the home team to break their duck as full back Dan Newton put the ball between the posts. A game which had been pretty much at a stalemate came to life as Ponty no8 Dan Godfrey generated a dynamic break, his side advancing to the home line. Quins lock Gavin Evans was dispatched to the sin bin for impeding and from the resultant scrum the Ponty pack powering over for a try claimed by Godfrey and converted by Flanagan. Despite a brief repost from the Quins Ponty held out for a deserved interval lead of 3pts to 16. A kick and rush attack gave Ponty an early second half impetus and fly half Flanagan hoisting over a penalty to increase their lead. The Quins then countered at pace, with Ponty flanker Wayne O'Connor sent to the sin bin as his team conceded ground and then points from a Dan Newton penalty. As Ponty ...

Ponty come into the final having topped the Premiership division for a second successive season, and engaging in their second successive cup final as current holders. Cross Keys enter the fray as proud flag bearers of Welsh club rugby, having made their mark by progressing to the final round of the British & Irish Cup, where they recently lost out to Munster A.
