We are not Hispanics: Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute
Last night I went to the Warner Theater and tried to speak to students of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, at the end of a Comedy show this organization presented as part of its 2009 conference. I could only speak to three people -very sharp and educated folks- and this video is very interesting. They are an attorney from Colorado, a young Capitol Hill staffer, and a promising activist from NYC. I asked them three questions: * Why are we called Hispanics when we are Natives and Afro descendants? * Why are corrupted corporations sponsoring the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute 2009 Conference? * Will the Obama administration actually approve an Immigration Reform? .

Octavio Hinojosa Mier-The US Hispanic community at the crossroads.mp4
Today, Americans of Hispanic descent are the second largest demographic group in the United States of America. Their demographic and economic growth will play an increasing role in the conceptualization and implementation of both US domestic and foreign policy in the 21st Century. US Hispanics are as diverse as the general American population. How can this diversity be leveraged to overcome current challenges facing the United States such as, for example, the current national conversation on comprehensive immigration reform? What role can Hispanics also play fostering greater intercultural and interreligious dialogue both domestically and abroad? Octavio A. Hinojosa Mier is Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Leadership Institute (CHLI), a nonprofit and non-partisan organization dedicated to promoting the positive advancement of the diverse US Hispanic community in the public, private, and non-profit sectors, as well as in the international community. He began directing the organization at its inception in 2004. Previously, Octavio served as the inaugural Executive Director of the Congressional Hispanic Conference (CHC), a Congressional member organization. In addition, Octavio has served in a variety of positions at the US Department of State. From 1996 to 2001, he was assigned to the Bureau of Diplomatic Security where he served as a Security Analyst for US embassies and consulates in the Western Hemisphere, Europe and Africa.

Rep. Rangel on President Obama's Deferred Action Initiative for DREAMers
WASHINGTON, DC -- Congressman Charles B. Rangel participated in a press conference led by Congressman Luis Gutierrez, chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Immigration Taskforce, and attended by two dozen members of Congress, representing several congressional caucuses. The participants directed their attention to those eligible under President Barack Obama's immigration deferred action initiative, encouraging them to avoid paying hefty fees to lawyers or anyone else and to come forward on August 15th, the first day undocumented immigrants can apply for deferred action. President Obama's deferred action initiative sets five criteria for qualification for potential beneficiaries: • They must have come to the US before they turned 16; • They must have been born after June 15, 1981; • They must have continuously resided in the US since June 15, 2007, and must have been present in the US on June 15, 2012; • They must currently be in school, have received a high school diploma or GED, or been honorably discharged from the US Armed Forces or the Coast Guard; • They must not have been convicted of a felony, a "significant misdemeanor," multiple misdemeanor offenses, or otherwise pose a threat to national security or public safety. Anyone applying for deferred action would need to go through a criminal background check. Rangel has been a long-time supporter of the DREAM Act, dating all the way back to 2001 when he co-sponsored the legislation when it was first introduced ...
