The term "NEPAL" came to exist from 4th BCE. Before that the Himalayas region was known as KIRATDESH. So anyone living in the Himalayas region before the 4th BCE is Kirat. KIRATAS first appear in the Yajur Veda (Shukla XXX.16; Krisha III.4,12,1) and in the Atharva Veda (X.4,14) written over 3000+ years ago describing them as "mountain people and hunters in the forests and deadly warriors." Kiratas are described as gold-like, ie, yellow in color per vedic texts. "Kairatam vesam asthaya kancana-druma-sannibham" Taking up a Kirata resemblance, like unto a tree of gold (IV,35,2); "dadarsatha tato jisnuh purusam kancana-prabham" Then the Victorious One(Arjuna) saw a Man(Kirat), shining like gold (IV, 35,17); Kiratas as deadly warrior: "Kiratasca tiksna-cudasca hemabhah priya-darsanah, antar-jala-cara ghora nara-vyaghra iti srutah" The Kiratas, with hair done in pointed top-knots, pleasant to look upon, shining like gold, able to move under water, terrible, veritable tiger-men, so are they famed. Who are the Gurkha? The Gurkha are the fame Unit in the British and the Indian armed forces. Gurkha are also serving in the Singapore and Brunei forces. The Gurkha are formed by Indo-Mongoloid men from Nepal namely from Magar, Gurung, Rai and Limbu communities. Neolithic tools found in the Kathmandu Valley indicate that people have been living in the Himalayan region for at least 9000 years. The foremost settlers in this region was the Indo-Mongoloid people who are termed as "Kiratas" in Veda and other ancient literature. In Sanskrit, Kirata means native of the land with "kiram atati bhramati yah" or one wandering over the forests. Kiratas are first mentioned in the Yajurveda (Shukla XXX.16; Krisha III.4,12,1), and in the Atharvaveda (X.4,14), describing them as "mountain people and hunters in the forests and deadly warriors." In Manu's Dharmashastra (X.44) they are mentioned as degraded Kshatriyas, which meant that they were considered to be of advanced civilization, but outside the ambit of Brahminical influence. Kiratas are also mentioned in ancient Greek history, Chinese history and Holy book of Sikh Guru Nanak. The Greeks had known the Kirats by the name of Kirhadai. Sakela~The Greatest Festival of Kirat People

Sakela is the main festival of Kirat people which is celebrated twice a year distinguished by two names Ubhauli and Udhauli. Udhauli means going down: It is believed that from this day the winter season starts. So people, birds and animal migrate from cold regions to warmer regions. The celebration of migrating downwards during the season of winter (Nov-Dec) is called "Udhauli" and the celebration of migrating upwards during the season of summer (April-May) is called "Ubhauli". This has been going on since the dawn of the mankind when the Kirat people were hunters and gatherers which time is immemorial. Still today, animals and birds have seasonal migratory. Later when the Kirat people shifted from being hunters and gatherers to agriculturalist, the festival became known as Bhumi Puja or land worshipping ceremony as Sakela falls on (15th day of the 5th month of Nepali calendar) coinciding with the sowing season. Kirat people are basically nature worshipers and during this festival prayers are offered to the natural supreme power Kirateswor (Lord of Kiratas), Mother Goddess, spirits, "nag-nagi" and nature asking for good crops and protection from natural calamities during the season of April (Ubhauli) where people starts to sow crops.
