COORDINATED UNIVERSAL TIME (UTC) via KHVH (Hawaii) April 1983
One can still get UTC (Cooridinated Universal Time) via Googling it...and that display appears via old-school "Nixie" neon-vacuum tubes. BUT back in the day (or even now?) one could HEAR this time signal, via shorwave radio. I got this on cassette on an AM/FM boombox via freak atmosphric situations in the Aiea/Oahu area....perhaps the shortwave signals were demodulated into AM or something.

Atomic Clock Sound Effect (Shortwave Radio)
Originally uploaded by hosehead66 on May 29, 2010 The sound of the atomic clock on the shortwave radio. I looked everywhere for a high quality sound clip and finally found some of it. Note: this sound clip is not atomically accurate, as it has been edited, clipped, cut, and pasted.

ITU VIDEO: RA-12 Plenary 19th January 2012 - THE LEAP SECOND
The ITU Radiocommunication Assembly has reached an important decision to defer the development of a continuous time standard while recognizing the concerns of countries that use the current system of the leap second in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The decision has been reached to ensure that all the technical options have been fully addressed. These studies will involve further discussions within the ITU membership and other organizations who have an interest in this matter and will be referred to the next Radiocommunication Assembly and World Radiocommunication Conference scheduled for 2015. Adjustments made in one second steps, known as 'leap seconds', have been implemented since 1972 to compensate for variations in the speed of the earth's rotation within the framework of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).

kittypr0n: Ep. 16 - "Ash Tree" (1/3)
Episode 16: "Ash Tree." Originally produced in 2003 and aired on Access San Francisco, Cable Channel 29. Music: Alastair Galbraith's "Coordinated Universal Time." My personal favorite of the twenty-two episodes we made. This show is very much a relic of its time. There was no YouTube, and cat videos weren't so plentiful on the internet. (Cat pictures, yes, but not cat videos.) It was created for television. We were on public access cable at half past midnight, and our intended audience was people flipping through channels--the sleepless and the stoned.

ITU INTERVIEWS @ RA-12: the "leap second" - Vincent Meens, Chair, ITU-R Study Group 7
The ITU Radiocommunication Assembly has reached an important decision to defer the development of a continuous time standard while recognizing the concerns of countries that use the current system of the leap second in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). The opinions expressed in ITU INTERVIEWS are those of the interviewees and do not necessarily represent ITU.

Odd voices over WWVH time signal 10MHz
The time signals on the shortwave band can be found on 2.5MHz, 5MHz, 10MHz, and 15Mhz. So, why would someone try to have a conversation over one? Seems... Kinda stupid. Anyhow, the interesting bit in this video is after the 55 sec. mark to around 1.20. I checked for an adjacent broadcast, but it's definitely broadcasting on 10Mhz. This phenomena apparently has been around for a while, at least sporadically: groups.google.com Just when you think you've gone through all the weird stuff on shortwave, more just turns up.

Craig T. Furlong & Gordon Ross There exist two separate precision data time sets that address when the aircraft crashed into the Towers. Both data time sets are based on UTC (Coordinated Universal Time, the world's atomic clock system) and the sources that determined these times were prestigious, reliable and credible. There is no question regarding the precision and accuracy of the instruments used to record both data time sets, since their entire function depends and relies upon temporal accuracy, and therefore there can be no doubt that both data time sets are correct. Earthquake hits Ottawa City Council
"An earthquake struck Ottawa, Canada at approximately 8:45 pm Eastern Standard Time on February 24, 2006." said one area resident. Natural Resources Canada, however, says the earthquake of 4.5 magnitude struck Western Quebec on February 25 at approximately 1:39 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) which is effectively GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). (Earthquakes are generally listed in UTC time to ensure an absolute and consistent basis of when they occurred.) This may have been felt several hundred kilometres away. Located North of Thurso According to the Canadian Press the earthquake was centred north of Thurso, Quebec, "approximately 45 kilometres east-northeast of Ottawa, said John Adams, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada." Witness reports state somewhat violent shaking with little or no property or personal damage. "It started as a rumble, then shaking... the whole house was shaking and the glasses were rattling," said Jeff Thiessen, a resident of Manor Park. One Ottawa resident said "the ground shook for about 30 seconds and was felt by residents near the city center." There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage to property. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS) "A magnitude 4.0 eastern earthquake typically can be felt at many places as far as 100 km (60 mi) from where it occurred, and it infrequently causes damage near its source." Follow-up reports indicate that rumbles could be felt as far as Kingston, Ontario, Montreal, Quebec and New York ...
