Eastern Oysters Spawning in Hatchery at UMD
Crassostrea virginica (eastern oyster) are cemented in place for life once the larvae settle on some hard substrate in nature or in the lab. Here male and female oysters area spawning at the Horn Pt. University of MD hatchery. Oysters are protandric hermaphrodites (or they start as males and become mostly females as they grow and age). They can be coaxed to spawn by changing temperature in the lab.

Massachusetts' Wellfleet Oyster Restoration Project
Massachusetts famous Wellfleet Oysters are getting a boost from a first-of-its-kind restoration project on Cape Cod. By experimenting with structures on which oyster seed can stick, The Nature Conservancy, NOAA and Mass Audubon hope to bolster wild Eastern oysters and restore habitats that defend the shoreline against sea level rise. The Amazing Oyster - Oyster Reefs
In many parts of America's Atlantic coast, the eastern oyster (Crassostrea virginica) is a keystone species. Terri Fox of The Nature Conservancy explains how oysters provide crucial habitats for other organisms. Learn more about the water cleansing ability of oysters: www.youtube.com This is an excerpt from THE AMAZING OYSTER, an educational DVD available from North Carolina Sea Grant. Oyster Capital of the East Coast
For people who love great seafood in a beautiful setting, Virginia is gaining ground as a hot destination for oyster lovers. The commonwealth -- already known around the world as a top wine travel destination, is now becoming the oyster capital of the East Coast -- with seven different oyster regions and status as the largest producer of fresh, farm-raised oysters in the country.

America Invests in NC Estuaries - Down East Oysters
Coastal North Carolina is getting a $5 million slice of federal stimulus funding to restore its oyster reefs and fisheries economy. Local commercial fishermen -- like these men and women working in April on Cedar Island -- are being paid through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to plant shell piles, which form the foundations for new oyster reefs. Recruited fishermen are planting 10000 bushels of shell in Hyde County, 11000 bushels in Carteret County, 18000 bushels in Onslow County and 2000 bushels in New Hanover County. The project is led by the NC Coastal Federation with the help of NC Division of Marine Fisheries. Sea Grant research, including work funded by the NC Fishery Resource Grant, helped determine the new reef locations and designs. To learn more, go to: www.ncseagrant.org

Eugene Burreson: Oyster Scientist
In 2000, Eugene Burreson and a colleague published a landmark work of scientific sleuthing that pinpointed for the first time the source of the protozoan parasite that causes MSX, a disease that helped reduce native oyster stocks in the Chesapeake to one percent of historic levels. Burreson, then a researcher at the Virginia Institute of Marine Science, used genetic fingerprinting to show that the DNA of the MSX microbe found in the Bay's native oysters (C. virginica) matched that in parasites found in Japanese, or Pacific, oysters (C. gigas), which apparently were imported to East Coast waters starting in the 1930s. This video is from the Maryland Sea Grant documentary, "Who Killed Crassostrea virginica: The Fall and Rise of Chesapeake Bay Oysters," by Michael W. Fincham.

A Chinese Oyster for the Chesapeake?
Seafood growers and packers are calling for replanting the Chesapeake with oysters from China. But scientists have formed cautious and sometimes conflicting opinions about the promise and perils of planting non-natives. Can Crassotrea ariakensis revive the tidewater seafood economy? Can it create ecological benefits for the ecosystem? Here in their own words are an oyster packer, an oyster grower and two oyster scientists. Produced and directed by Michael W. Fincham, Maryland Sea Grant.
