"Juneteenth Jamboree" - Fatso Bentley
Gladys "Fatso" Bentley, Blues vocals, b. 1907, Philadelphia. In the early 1930s, this well known lesbian singer appeared at Harlem's Ubangi Club, backed by a chorus of men in drag. ------------------------------ Juneteenth is the oldest celebration commemorating the ending of slavery in the United States. On June 19th Eighteen and Sixty-Five, 2000 Union soldiers landed at Galveston, Texas with news that the war had ended and that the enslaved were now free. General Gordon Granger read the contents of "General Order No. 3": The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor. Of course, this was two and a half years after Emancipation. However, Emancipation had little impact in Texas due to the small number of Union troops available to enforce it. But, with the surrender of General Lee in April of Eighteen and 65, and the arrival of General Granger's regiment in Galveston, the Union forces were finally strong enough to bring about freeing the 250000 slaves in Texas. Slaves in Galveston rejoiced in the streets with jubilant celebrations. The first organized celebrations of Juneteenth were used as political rallies and to teach freed African Americans about their voting rights. Within a ...

KingCast Boston Juneteenth Celebration chat with Governor Patrick!
christopher-king.blogspot.com It's good to be free! A walk in the park...... viva le revolution! 19 June 2010 KingCast, Governor Patrick, nice bikers and Soul Train dancers headline Boston Juneteenth Celebration, with Justice for Marinova CORI leak promised! "We're gonna' put it to bed," agreed Governor Patrick. See para. 2, infra. Videos uploading to KingCast65 YouTube Channel. All raw, unretouched photos and video (videos coming by 11p tonight). I give Governor Patrick a hard time sometimes but at the same time I've volunteered for President Obama and him and will probably do so again. But the bottom line, noted (in video of course) in the KingCast coverage of his town hall meeting, is that the historically racist Boston Herald lied about, and Defamed Joanna Marinova when she was working for prison reform with State Rep Gloria Fox and Darrell Jones. Read the Emily Rooney - Beat the Press segment and listen to my radio segment about all of that nonsense, which involves an unauthorized and illegal CORI leak. I know Governor Patrick is working hard to reform CORI, and this is but one of several battles he faces in that endeavor. As for the bikers, we got along so well, a common denominator being that we tend NOT to get along with most crotch-rocket riders; we don't tend to have similar interests. J & R, C & K: Your emails will go out tonight, solid. Peace, guys and gals :) KingCast: Reel news for real people.
