HISTORY OF SUN TEMPLE AT KONARK,ODISHA.
LEGEND. The legend says that King Narasimha Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty had ordered the temple to be built as a royal proclamation of the political supremacy of his dynasty. A workforce of 12 hundred artisans and architects invested their creative talent, energy and artistic commitment for an exhausting period of 12 years. The king had already spent an amount equivalent to the state's revenue receipts of 12 years. However, the completion of the construction was nowhere in sight. Then the king issued a final command that the work be completed by a stipulated date. The team of architects headed by Bisu Maharana was at their wit's end. It was then that Dharmapada, the 12 year old son of the chief architect Bisu Maharana, arrived there as a visiting onlooker. He became aware of the anxiety looming large among the architects. Although he did not have any practical experience of temple construction, he was thorough in his study of the theories of temple architecture. He offered to solve the confounding problem of fixing the last copping stone at the top of the temple. He surprised everyone by doing that himself. But soon after this achievement the dead body of this adolescent prodigy was found on the sea beach at the foot of the temple. Legend says that Dharmapada laid down his life to save his community. The temple was dedicated to the Sun-God(Arka) popularly called Biranchi-Narayan, and the tract in which it is situated was known as Arka-Kshetra as well as padma-kshetra ...

SUN TEMPLE,KONARK,ODISHA.(PART-3)
ODISHA came under Muslim control in 1568. There were constant attempts to destroy the Hindu temples. The Pandas of Puri, to save the sanctity of the Puri temple, took away the Lord Jagannath from the Srimandir and kept the image in a secret place. Similarly, it is said that the Pandas of Konark took away the presiding deity of the Sun temple and buried it under the sand for years. Latter on the image was said to have been removed to Puri and kept in the temple of Indra, in the compound of the Puri Jagannath temple. According to others, the Puja image of the Konark temple is yet to be discovered. But others hold the view that the Sun image now kept in the National Museum of Delhi was the presiding deity of the Konark Sun temple. However, the Sun worship in the Konark temple was ended upon the removal of the image from the temple. This resulted in the end of pilgrimages to Konark. The port at Konark was also closed, due to pirate attacks. Konark was as glorious a city for Sun worship as it was for commercial activities, but after the cessation of these activities, Konark became deserted and was left to develop as a dense forest for years. In 1626 the then king of Khurda, Raja Narasimha Dev, son of Purusottam Dev, took away the Sun image to Puri along with two other moving deities - Sun and Moon. Now they are found in a temple in the compound of Puri Jagannath temple. It is recorded in the Madala Panji of Puri temple that in 1028, Raja Narasimha Dev ordered measurements to ...

Konark , Sun Temple - 3
Konark (Odia: କୋଣାର୍କ) (Sanskrit: कोणार्क) is a small town in Puri district in the state of Odisha, India, on the Bay of Bengal, sixty-five kilometers from Bhubaneswar. It is the site of the 13th-century Sun Temple (also known as the Black Pagoda), built in black granite by King Narasimhadeva-I (AD 1236-1264) of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty. The temple is a World Heritage Site. It takes the form of the chariot of Surya (Arka), the sun god, and is heavily decorated with stone carving. The entire complex was designed in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on twelve pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels. The entrance is guarded by two lions, which are each shown crushing a war elephant. Each elephant in turn lies on top of a human body. The temple symbolises the majestic stride of the Sun god. At the entrance of the temple is a Nata Mandir. This is where the temple dancers used to perform dances in homage to the Sun god. All around the temple, there are various floral and geometric patterns. There are also human, divine and semi-divine figures in sensuous poses. The poses contains couples in various amorous poses, and are derived from the Kama Sutra. The temple is now partly in ruins, and a collection of its sculptures is housed in the Sun Temple Museum, which is run by the Archaeological Survey of India. The poet Rabindranath Tagore wrote of Konark: "Here the language of stone surpasses the language of man." Konark literally means "Essence ...

At Konark festival, artists use their talent to spread messages
In an era of breaking news and sensationalism, the space for India's rich traditional art and culture is gradually shrinking in the media. But thanks to the relentless dedication and passion of artists, they continue to hold high India's rich tradition. In the backdrop of the glittering Sun temple, some distinguished classical dancers brought beauty alive at the annual five-day Konark festival organised by the Odisha tourism department. Foreign tourists flocked to the festival to be enthralled by Odissi dancer Madhavi Mudgal and Kuchipudi dance guru Raja Radha Reddy.

Konark , Sun Temple - 2
The temple complex is enclosed within a compound about 261 m by 164 m. At the eastern entrance is an isolated pillared hall (bhoga mandira) built on a richly decorated platform, some believing it to be a nata mandira (dance hall). To its west is an open space leading to the porch (jagamohana) which, from the base to the top, stands to about 39 m. The lower section of the original deul (sanctuary) to its East, once over 60 m tall, dominates the landscape for many kms. To the southeast of the deul are the remains of the Mahagayatri Temple while behind this structure is Vaishnava Temple and many a foundations of other structures. The entire temple was conceived as the celestial chariot of Surya, the Sun-god. Drawn by seven galloping horses (only one is still intact), which represent the days of the week, while the 12 wheels ranged along the base stand for the 12 months. The eight spokes in the each wheel symbolize the eight prahars of the day. The platform (3.9 m high) rests on a low upana (the plinth) with three broad flight of steps, facing North, South and East doors of the porch leading to its top. Running right round the base of the temple, the facade of the upana has extraordinary friezes featuring military processions, hunting scenes, elephants uprooting trees, feeding young ones, men attempting to capture elephants, journeys, rows of athletes, lady cooking and more secular scenes of every day life. Among the animals carved, the presence of a giraffe on the southern ...

Konark,Sun Temple - 1
Konark - The Sun Temple of Konark, often called as the Black Pagoda, was constructed in the mid thirteenth century by Raja Narasinghs Deva-I of the Ganga Dynasty. It is an ample testament to the artistic glory of the time. Conceived in the form of a huge chariot drawn by seven spirited horses on 12 pairs of exquisitely decorated wheels--after the mythical seven horse chariot of Sun God--the temple was unique in its architecture and implementation. Intricate carvings on the walls of the main temple and the Natya Mandap (a separate structure just in front of the temple) are a sight to behold. It is often considered the best among other temples of its kind and that is saying something when you are talking about the golden triangle of Orissa which boasts of Sri Jagannath temple and Lingraj Temple of Puri and Bhubaneswar. The Sun Temple has lost its many of its original structures to time and disrepair, but the remaining structures and the remainder of the structures confirm till today the infinite imaginative power of the artistes of the time and their inspiring contribution to Vaisnav Culture. The crowing glory of the temple architecture of Orissa, the Sun Temple at Konark, plays host to the annual dance festival featuring Odissi and other traditional dance forms. The open air stage against the backdrop of the floodlit temple reverberates with the beats of classical ragas and thalas to transport the audience in sheer ecstasy. The accompanying divine music and the ...

Ustad Zakir Hussain : 27th Konark Dance & Music Festival 2012, Odisha "Please aap mujhe ustad naa bulayein." (Please don't call me a master)" I am a very small artist compared to the doyen sitting in the front row (which included Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia) and the founder of this festival Guru Gangadhar Pradhan." As he made this statement the entire Natya Mandap was filled with reverberation of clapping hands welcoming the great tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain who had come to Odisha for the first time to play in a concert at the Konark Dance and Music Festival. He was honoured with the Guru Gangadhar Pradhan Life-time achievement award. "Arey huzoor wah taj boliye." He was accompanied on stage with Shabbir Khan, a 24-year-old "Saarangi" sensation. Soon the entire crowd was enthralled by the music concocted by the hands of Zakir Hussain. Whilst playing the tabla, he radiated the energy of a 20 year old ,sometimes pausing in the midst of the rendition, he would joke with the audience and then carry on. Zakir Hussain enchanted the jam-packed open-air auditorium by his recital, one could hear people murmuring "Ohhh" "Waaah" and so he began his journey creating the effects of the pakhawaj, mridang and dholak from his tabla. He narrated the story of how Lord Shiva destroyed the asuras to how black clouds sound when expressed through this percussion instrument to how auto rickshaws, cycles and buses amble or meander through the streets of India and how pitter-patter of rain and the ...
