Tuareg's Return Home - Mali
May 1997 A report on the plight of the nomadic Tuareg people of the Sahara. For centuries the deserts of northern Mali have sustained the Tuareg; herdsmen known as the 'blue people' of the Sahara. But, in the 1990s the combination of droughts and civil war forced most to abandon their herds and flee to refugee camps in Mauritania. Now Moussa Ag Mohammed is returning to his land; but the loss of his herds, and the remorseless advance of the desert, means his ancient lifestyle is doomed. Mohammet Ali, whose lineage can be traced back twelve hundred years, digs with pitiful tools to maintain an ever sinking well against the dusty backdrop of the desert plains. He refused to fight or flee during the war, sticking by his philosophy 'If it is hot where you are, it's even hotter somewhere else'. Orphaned Faty and her brother tend their precious market garden on a patch of sand outside the village; every last drop of water must be pumped by hand. The Tuareg are still pessimistic that their way of life will die out as their children migrate to the towns for an 'easier' lifestyle

Imshuradj People without a Country part 01
A hard-hitting film about the Tuareg people of North Africa, how they have been marginalised, divided, had their land stolen and their culture repressed. Part 2 can be veiwed www.youtube.com Filming in secret, with no travel documents and no licence to film, Akli Sh'kka, his cameraman and guide set out to tell the story of the people who live in the Sahara Desert. Passing through difficult terrain, they met with various tribes throughout the desert and in some villages. Their aim? Simply to establish the truth about Tenere, one of the least-known places on the planet. That, alas, meant exposing the intolerable political situation of the Tuareg. The film makers fervently hope that they have been able to bring home to the outside world the realities of this unknown land, and that their film will engage the human sympathies of fair-minded people who might, in however small way, help to influence the decision-makers of the planet. "This film is dedicated to my late friend Bassi & those British friends who have particularly helped make it possible. I also dedicate it to my own suffering people, the Tuareg or Amazigh, in whichever country they currently find themselves."

Tuaregs fail to allay terrorism fears
As Tuareg rebels in Africa struggle for recognition of their new Azawad state, the UN Security Council has expressed concern about the "terrorist threat" in northern Mali. The National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, whose declaration of independence for a state in the northern two-thirds of Mali has yet to receive any external recognition, says if the US and Saudi Arabia cannot yet find a solution to al-Qaeda threats, how can they be expected to. Al Jazeera's Mohamed Vall reports exclusively from Timbuktu on the dual challenges of asserting sovereignty while fending off other armed groups facing those fighting for what they say is Azawadi independence.

Tuareg People are on their Way to Fight the NATO-Rebels in Libya (Sept 26, 2011)
In this report by Diego Marin from Telesur we can hear about growing battles within Tripoli between various militias who seem to fight for their own power, without taking much heed from the political NTC. This would cause an unsafe situation. Perhaps part of these fightings are the result of the Tarhuna-tribe who - according to various rumors - would have decided to oppose the Rebel-rule of Libya. Diego also talks about the Tuaregh who would have decided to back the green Jamahiriya in Libya as well, claiming that Tuaregh from Niger and Mali are on their way to move into Libyan territory, mostly to avenge their people who were killed by the NATO Rebels. Video mirrored from the english telesur youtube channel at www.youtube.com If this were to be true about the Tuaregh it would make the situation more international, with more black people fighting in Libya, which would aggravate the racist tendencies in quite a few 'Rebels'. More news from ArRai from Morris at www.youtube.com (no more food, water in Sirte; fighting in Ghadames between Tuareg and Rebels - it would have been the people inside the city of Ghadames that would have revolted - No Tuareg from abroad; Bani Walid is free of Rebels, and much of the road to Bani Walid would now be in Green hands)

Tuareg - Sahara
The unique Sahara, my friends
Leaving Midelt at 6.00 in the morning, cross Medium and Grand Atlas and move downstream until the desert. A giant trip to get smaller and smaller and, again smaller until you achieve the dimension of a single sand grain. And yet, growing more and more until everything becomes perfectly clear. The Ultimate Key. I choose Mo'horizons to take us down to the desert.
At the desert… our souls were drawn by the moving colours of dunes until the sunset, while riding long hours that nice and desperately uncomfortable animals, the curious meal with Europeans, Tuaregs and some animals of the desert, the small eternal fire under the night of 1000 stars and the language of senses and gestures that made possible the communication with such a gentle and warm people, who own an incredibly rich and smart culture. Again, Nitin Sahwney, and his deep cries from the soul (Nadia) bring up the perfect emotion.
Finally, the rests of my confusing civilized life start falling, and I get closer to the emptiness needed to create something. I spent some hours looking the sand grains moving away with wind and imagine all the trouble they had come trough to get here, and how much more trouble is waiting for them. Lucky troubles, because those are the paths that make their life. Just like me in this dual-travel… around the mind and around the world.

Tuareg - Marrakech
Marrakech is one of the four imperial towns of Morocco, capital of Almorávidas and Almohades dinasties. Marrakech was founded in 1070 and it has a strategic location between the desert, and the ocean, facing the Atlas mountains which makes the rigth place for commercial trading. For me Marrakech is a fantastic African town with all its smells, colours and the singing echo of prays spread all around. The Jemaa al Fna, Plaza is the big heart of the city, where everyone / everything seem to converge, and where one can be drowned by magnificent sunsets full of magic.
We just rent some rooms with view to the Plaza, and so i´ll spend sometime here, feeling the life under my nose, while i write down the first chapter of "my romance". I have my eyes full of scenaries like Draa and Dadés valleys, Todga Gorges, the Atlas Mountains and the Wind Mountains (Sahara), etc., always with this friendly and surprising people, the Berberes, who managed to keep their cultural identity in a arabian world, and so giving raise to a very peculiar country, when compared with the other Magrebe cultures.

A moment of truth--Tuareg speak
NOTE: IN THE VIDEO "ONE OF THESE THINGS ARE NOT LIKE THE OTHERS";) BERBER---Etymology The name "Berber" derives from variants of the root "barbar," which exist in most Indo-European sub-languages and Arabic. The Greek word "Βαρβαρος" (or the English transliteration, "barbaros") was initially used to refer to non-native speakers (also as non-citizens) in a manner quite similar to the definition of the Sanskrit word "barbara," which also means stammering. Greek writers, Isocrates (436 - 338 BC) and Xenophon (430 - 354 BC) frequently used "barbaros" when referring to Persians (and other Asians), and the ancient Romans used the word "barbarus" (feminine: barbara) to refer to foreigners, such as Huns, Gauls, and Africans. The Romans expanded its definition to a more negative connotation (eg savage and uncivilized), and from the Roman use of the word, we get our present use of "barbarian" in modern English, as well as variants in other European languages. However, neither ancient Greek nor Roman writers used the term to specifically refer to northwest Africa (Greeks commonly called this area "Libya" and to Romans, it was Mauretania). The term "Berber," as it relates to Africans, was first used by medieval Arabic-speaking Muslim writers (from the Arabic word, "al-barbar") in a similar manner to the original meaning of barbar--to refer to speakers of foreign languages. Arabic-speaking Muslim writers did not use it to refer to any particular African region, culture, or ethnicity ...
