A community's child: The story of Phillip 'Tookie' Stanford
Phillip "Tookie" Stanford was the only son in a family of four. By the time he was 7 years old, he had lost his sister and father to violence and his mother to cancer. The Lonsdale community in Knoxville, Tenn., saw Tookie as their own and wanted to see him succeed. He was a rising basketball star. While at West High School, Tookie received several accolades for his athletic achievements. The loss of his family was something he struggled with daily. As his aunt, Nikki Daniels, said, "It was a child's question that never was answered." See related article: www.knoxnews.com

Efrat Shapira was once a musical staple around Knoxville. Efrat (who now goes by only her first name professionally) played with the klezmer band Tennessee Schmaltz, the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra, the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra and other groups in town. Now living in New York City, Efrat is gaining a reputation as an eclectic jazz violinist and vocalist.
"I'm lucky," says Efrat in a call from her home. "I'm playing three gigs every week at least and I've only been here for a couple of years. I always wanted to come here. When I was 14 or 15 I told my parents that I didn't want to go to college; I wanted to got to New York and take violin lessons."
It was a roundabout journey.
Efrat began playing classical violin at the age of eight. She says the first piece of music that had a profound affect on her was Mozart's "Requiem":
"I fell in love with it when the movie 'Amadeus' came out when I was nine years old. When I was in college when I was having a down moment I would lie on the floor, turn off all the lights, and turn it up as loud as I could and just listen. ARTICLE CONTD. HERE (WITH IMAGES)...

Opening the gates to Oak Ridge in 1949
On March 19, 1949, the government opened the gates to Oak Ridge, one of the super-secure encampments created for work on the World War II Manhattan Project. While there was still-tight security on roads leading to the actual plants -- X-10, Y-12 and K-25 -- the routes to the city proper were unblocked for the first time since the spring of 1943. It was time for a celebration. Read more on Frank Munger's blog: blogs.knoxnews.com
