CNU 20 - Hispaniola: Birthplace of the Latin American City
Hispaniola was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492, and was the first island in the New World settled by the Spanish. By 1550, the indigenous culture of the Taino Indians had vanished from the island, and Hispaniola became a neglected backwater of the Spanish Empire. Nonetheless, scattered across the island, the Spanish left behind town layouts that reflected their cultural heritage. Santo Domingo was a walled city, modeled after those of medieval Spain, and for three decades was the seat of Spanish power and culture in the New World. The layout of the city followed the classic European grid pattern, with several plazas. After a period under French control, the eastern portion of the island became independent and known as the Dominican Republic. A massive migration from rural to urban areas characterized the twentieth century, with nearly 60 percent of Dominicans living nowadays in urban areas. The capital, Santo Domingo, is the largest city by far. In recent decades, various mono-zoned, exclusive residential enclaves have appeared along with all-inclusive hotels, both sitting starkly in contrast to the surviving villages and towns of colonial breeding. Local and neighboring New Urbanists are gradually challenging the legal constructs that facilitate such incongruent insertions in the fabric of the landscape. On the western end of the island, French colonists held control until 1789, when revolution in France sparked dissension in the colony. In 1804, the rebel ...

Dominican Republic
Dominican Republic - The Dominican Republic (Spanish: República Dominicana, is a nation on the island of Hispaniola, part of the Greater Antilles archipelago in the Caribbean region. The western third of the island is occupied by the nation of Haiti, making Hispaniola one of two Caribbean islands that are occupied by two countries. Both by area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest Caribbean nation (after Cuba), with 48442 km² and an estimated 10 million people. Inhabited by Taínos since the seventh century, what is now the Dominican Republic was reached by Christopher Columbus in 1492 and became the site of the first permanent European settlement in the Americas, namely Santo Domingo, the country's capital and Spain's first capital in the New World. In Santo Domingo stand, among other firsts in the Americas, the first university, cathedral, and castle, the latter two in the Ciudad Colonial area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. ( source Wikipedia)

Tropical Storm Isaac takes aim at Hispaniola Aug 2012
www.washingtontimes.com ROSEAU, Dominica (AP) — Tropical Storm Isaac took aim at the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Thursday, and it was expected to gain strength after drenching tiny islands in its whirl over the eastern entrance to the Caribbean. There was a chance it could dump rain on next week's Republican convention in Florida. No major damage was reported, but authorities in Puerto Rico said an elderly woman died in an accident while preparing for the storm. US forecasters said Isaac was likely to approach Hispaniola, the island shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti, as a hurricane late Thursday or early Friday after intensifying over the warm waters of the Caribbean. It was predicted to move on to Cuba as a tropical storm, then perhaps head by Monday to Florida, where the Republicans will be gathering to nominate Mitt Romney for the presidency. HISPANIOLA
Hispaniola is the endearing story of two boys from different worlds, one Haitian, the other Dominican, who form a bond through baseball. It is through their eyes that we witness first hand the conflicts and misunderstandings between two people who share the same island, the island of Hispaniola. "One island, two worlds."

Puerto Plata Village in the Caribbean Island Hispaniola Dominican Republic January 2010
I have tried to make an international video for you guys wondering how it is to vacate in Puerto Plata Village. The guys here don't really like it when we film alot, so I try to hide it somewhat. What you see is the village area, the hotell, and then the trip to the beach, witch also belongs to the hotell. With the all inclusive, you also benefit of the free stuff down there. The ride down there is also free of charge offcourse... The camera isn't the best!

Corruption in Hispaniola: Senator Félix Bautista And President Michel Martelly
On Saturday, March 31, the most respected investigative journalist in the Dominican Republic dropped a bomb of evidence linking Senator Félix Bautista's (PLD) construction firms to a host of illegal payments to among others, current President of Haiti, Michell Martelly. Even though the evidence from Nuria seem very convincing, and the whole case in most other countries I know, amounts to a big, international scandal, the local media in the DR, with the exception of acento.com.do has basically ignored the whole thing, and only published the denials of the accused not the details of the case itself. But before I lay out the details of this international scandal, let's look at Félix Bautista. Félix Bautista is the Senator for PLD for the region San Juan, elected in 2010, and before that he worked for all three of Leonel's administrations. As many anonymous politicians that raise to fame, he worked in construction. During Leonel's first government (1996-2000)
