Cleveland Kidnap Victims Berry, DeJesus and Knight Release Thank-You Video
Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight, the three women held against their will for a decade locked in a Cleveland, Ohio, home, posted a video on YouTube early this morning to offer thanks for the support they have received trying to rebuild their lives.
Each of the women appeared separately in the 3-minute, 33-second video, with Berry and Knight each making a brief statement, while DeJesus answered questions from someone off camera, followed by her father, Felix DeJesus, and then her mother, Nancy Ruiz.
Berry appears calm and happy in the video, which was filmed July 2. She smiles frequently, as she offers thanks not only for those who have helped her, but to those who have respected the three women's request for privacy.
Cleveland Captives Break Silence and Give Thanks
"First and foremost, I want everyone to know how happy I am to be home with my family, my friends," she says. "It's been unbelievable. I want to thank everyone who has helped me and my family through this entire ordeal. Everyone who has been there to support us has been a blessing to have such an outpouring of love and kindness. I am getting stronger each day and having my privacy has helped immensely."
n response to a question of what she wants to say, DeJesus briefly answers that she would like to say thank you, before her father and then her mother speak at greater length.
Ruiz reflected on the love and support of neighbors, such as those who played such a big role in helping the three young women finally escape their captivity.
"Parents in general that do have a loved one missing, please do me one big favor. Count on your neighbors. Don't be afraid to ask for the help because help is available," she said.
Knight, who appears last, expresses confidence for the future and talks about how her faith in God has helped her.
"I may have been through hell and back, but I am strong enough to walk through hell with a smile on my face and with my held high and my feet firmly on the ground," she says. "Walking hand-in-hand with my best friend, I will not let the situation define who I am. I will define the situation."
Kathy Joseph, an attorney for Knight, said in a statement about the video that the three young women wanted to "say thank you to people from Cleveland and across the world."
"People are recognizing them now as they go about in public, so they decided to put voices and faces to their heartfelt messages," Joseph said. "It was their decision to relay their thanks in this way to all of the many people who have offered support to them, for which they are extremely grateful."
James Wooley, attorney for Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, said the release of the video does not mean that the three women will begin making public appearances or granting interviews any time soon.
"It is important for everyone, especially the media, to understand that the three women still have a strong desire for privacy," Wooley said. "They do not want to talk about their ordeal with the media or anyone else. This cannot be stated strongly enough."
Ariel Castro, 52, the man accused of kidnapping the three women and keeping them inside his home, has pleaded not guilty to a 329-count indictment that includes charges of kidnapping and rape.
Castro, a former school bus driver, also is also accused of the aggravated murder of a fetus for allegedly forcibly causing an abortion in one of his victims that he is accused of impregnating, a charge that could potentially carry the death penalty.

Cleveland Kidnap Michelle Knight Slips Away From Hospital Angry With Family
The family of Michelle Knight, the eldest of three Ohio women found alive Monday after being kidnapped a decade ago, says authorities did not take reports of Knight's disappearance seriously.
Knight was last seen at the age of 21 in 2002, according to the Plain Dealer, near a cousin's home in Cleveland. Police now believe she was kidnapped and locked in the home of Cleveland man Ariel Castro, where she and two other victims, Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, were held and sexually abused for around 10 years.
Deborah Knight, Michelle's grandmother, told The Plain Dealer that police and social workers concluded that her granddaughter had simply left on her own because she was angry her son had been taken out of her custody.
Michelle Knight's mother, Barbara Knight, says she never felt their conclusion was convincing, and did not believe her daughter would simply vanish without so much as a phone call.
Deputy Police Chief Ed Tomba admitted to NBC Tuesday that while the department had poured resources into the search for Berry and Dejesus -- who disappeared in 2003 and 2004, respectively -- Knight was "the focus of very few tips."
Despite a lack of police support, Barbara Knight said she continued to plaster Cleveland's West Side with missing posters. The mother moved to Florida about a year and a half ago, CNN reported, but would often come back to Cleveland to continue her search.
Barbara Knight told The Plain Dealer her daughter loved school, had many friends, and planned on becoming a veterinarian. However, at the age of 17, Michelle was assaulted at school, and her reports were not taken seriously. The teen became pregnant shortly thereafter and dropped out of school, though she planned to eventually return. The woman lost custody of her son, her mother said, after getting into a relationship with an abusive man who injured the boy.
The missing persons report filed in 2002 notes that Michelle Knight had a mental condition that made her easily confused by her surroundings, according to News Net 5.
A cousin, Brenda Dinickle, said that Michelle Knight had "the mind of a child," according to the New York Post.
Barbara Knight also told The Plain Dealer that she fears police have incorrectly identified her daughter, as false reports have surfaced in the past.
"I'm praying that if it is her, she will come back with me so I can help her recover from what she has been through," Knight said. "So much has happened in these ten years. She has a younger sister she still has not met. I missed her so much while she was gone."
The mother told WKYC she has had limited interaction with investigators, and has not yet been able to speak with her daughter, who is still in the hospital.

Texas Teens Save Kidnap Victim Who Mouthed 'Help Me' From Car
A just-released 911 call reveals the dramatic moment when two Dallas-area teens were able to help save a woman who had allegedly been kidnapped after they saw her mouth the words "help me" from the back of a moving vehicle.
Charles Atkins Lewis, 37, was arrested Aug. 22 after allegedly kidnapping the woman, 25, who has not been identified, at gunpoint and forcing her into his car in downtown Dallas. The two teenagers noticed the woman from their car as Lewis allegedly drove her through Kaufman County, according to the recording.
"Yes, I'm on the highway. I'm witnessing a robbery. Not a robbery, a kidnapping," Aaron Arias, 19, told a 911 dispatcher. "It's me and another guy. So we're checking out the girl in the backseat because we're like, 'OK, she's kind of attractive', and then all of a sudden the guy is turned back, looking at us.
"We looked in the backseat and the blond female in the back was saying, 'Help me,' or something, whispering it. So I'm assuming it is a kidnapping."

Shocking 'kidnap victim' truck sticker that's sparked anger and 911 calls across Texas
Shocking 'kidnap victim' truck sticker that's sparked anger and 911 calls across Texas. Many residents would dial 911 if they saw a woman tied up in the back of a truck. A convincing decal on the back of a tailgate is creating a stir in one Texas community.
What do you think of the business using this type of image to advertise? .Texas Business Creates Truck Decal Of Woman Bound And Tied To Bring In New Customers.Convincing decal on the back of a tailgate Stirs Controversy in Texas.Provocative Tailgate Decal Stirs Controversy.A tailgate decal suggesting that a woman is bound and tied in the back of a truck is raising some eyebrows in the Waco community.
At a glance, the decal is extremely convincing and acts as an optical illusion to make someone think there is an actual woman tied up in the bed of a truck.
But a closer look reveals that the optical illusion is simply a decal, and there is no woman in distress.
The decal is the handy work of Hornet Signs, a marketing and advertising company in Waco.
According to Brad Kolb, the owner of the company, the sticker was put on an employee's truck to gauge how realistic their decals are.
"I wasn't expecting the reactions we got, nor do we condone this by any means," Kolb said.
"It was more or less something we put out there to see who noticed it."
Kolb said an employee volunteered to be tied up and was photographed so the decal could be made.
It was put on the employees truck about a month ago, Kolb says, and has been catching many eyes throughout the Waco community.
However, reactions have been pretty one sided.
Some viewers told News 10 they called police when they saw the decal, but Kolb says he hasn't been approached by a police department yet.
News 10 asked viewers via Facebook what they thought of the decal on Thursday night. A majority of people agreed the decal wasn't a good idea, saying, "Abduction or any violence against women is not funny or cute."
Only a few voiced opinions of support, like," This American business owner has a decal that made the news. Like it or not, it works."
Either way, Kolb says his company has seen an influx in tailgate decal orders since the sticker has hit the streets a month ago.
Which poses the question, "Poor taste, or good business?"
