Junior dos Santos Almeida (Brazilian Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʒũnjoʁ dus ˈsɐ̃tus]), also known as Junior Cigano ("Gipsy"; born September 12, 1984), is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist and the current UFC Heavyweight Champion. He is ranked as the number one heavyweight fighter in the world by numerous media outlets.^[2][3][4]

Mixed martial arts career[link]

Dos Santos started training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Yuri Carlton for fitness reasons. After some time he was invited to join an MMA practice, where he met his boxing coach Luiz Carlos Dórea, and after roughly a year he made his debut fight.^[5][6]

Early career[link]

Dos Santos became professional in 2006 at the age of 21. He fought in small promotions in Brazil, such as Demo Fight, Extreme Fighting Championship, Minotauro Fights and Mo Team League. He won 6 out of his first 7 bouts, suffering his only loss to Joaquim Ferreira, a fighter he'd previously beaten.

Ultimate Fighting Championship (2008–present)[link]

Debut (2008–2010)[link]

Dos Santos debuted for the UFC on October 25, 2008 at UFC 90. Considered a major underdog,^[7] dos Santos knocked out top contender Fabricio Werdum at a minute and twenty-one seconds of the first round with a strong uppercut,^[8][9] earning himself a "Knockout of the Night" award.^[10]

Dos Santos returned on February 21, 2009 at UFC 95 and fought promotional newcomer Stefan Struve defeating him at fifty-four seconds of the first round by TKO.^[11]

On September 19, 2009, Dos Santos continued his winning streak and defeated Mirko Filipović at UFC 103.^[12] During the third round, dos Santos dominated Filipović in the clinch with knee strikes and punches. A knee from the clinch and a right uppercut left Cro Cop unable to see causing him to verbally submit.^[13]

Dos Santos was supposed to fight Gabriel Gonzaga at UFC 108. However, Gonzaga pulled out of the bout on November 25, 2009, due to a staph infection.^[14] Instead on January 2, 2010, dos Santos fought Gilbert Yvel,^[15] winning the fight via TKO at two minutes and seven seconds of the first round.^[16]

Dos Santos defeated Gabriel Gonzaga on March 21, 2010, at UFC Live: Vera vs. Jones by knockout in the first round.^[17] Earning Dos Santos his second "Knockout of the Night" award.^[18]

Heavyweight title contender (2010–2011)[link]

Dos Santos faced Roy Nelson on August 7, 2010, at UFC 117.^[19] The fight saw Dos Santos use a variety of strikes and, for the first time, a successful takedown.^[20] Despite dos Santos' striking ability, Nelson was able to stay in the fight,^[21] resulting in the fight going to decision.^[22] Dos Santos won via unanimous decision (30–26, 30–27, 30–27).^[23] Following the win Dos Santos was expected to challenge Cain Velasquez for the heavyweight title. However a torn rotator cuff suffered by Velasquez sidelined the champion for nearly a year.^[24]

On January 11, 2011, it was revealed that Dos Santos would be one of the coaches of The Ultimate Fighter Season 13, opposite to Brock Lesnar.^[25] They were scheduled to face each other on June 11, 2011, at UFC 131,^[26] but Lesnar pulled out of the bout due to a recurrence of diverticulitis and was replaced by Shane Carwin.^[27] Dos Santos dominated Carwin and defeated him via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-26),^[28] relying predominantly on his boxing skills,^[29] but showed more variety in his game by landing a couple of kicks and completing two takedowns in the third round.^[30][31]

UFC Heavyweight Champion (2011–present)[link]

Dos Santos faced Cain Velasquez at UFC on Fox 1 for the UFC Heavyweight Championship on November 12, 2011.^[32] Dos Santos defeated Velasquez in 1 minute and 4 seconds of the first round via KO to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship title.^[33] Dos Santos dropped Velasquez with an overhand right and finished him off with a series of punches.^[34] The performance also earned Dos Santos his third "Knockout of the Night" award.^[35] After the fight, it was revealed that he had a torn meniscus in his knee,^[36] he subsequently underwent a successful knee surgery.^[37]

Dos Santos was scheduled to face Alistair Overeem on May 26, 2012 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena at UFC 146.^[38] On April 4, 2012, the Nevada State Athletic Commission announced Overeem had failed a pre-fight drug test.^[39] Overeem's "A" sample was found to have a elevated T/E ratio of 14:1, the NSAC's allowable ratio is 6:1, Overeem had the opportunity to request a test on his "B" sample.^[40][41] A NSAC hearing on the issue was held on April 24, 2012.^[42] At the hearing Overeem's request for a license was denied.^[43] On April 20, 2012, Dana White the UFC president announced Frank Mir would be replacing Overeem.^[44] Junior dos Santos dominated the fight showing his superior boxing skills, resulting in a TKO in the second round.

Personal life[link]

Dos Santos is married. Moreover, he states that Antônio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira is his hero.^[45] In addition to his native Portuguese, Dos Santos speaks English and has stated his intention to learn Spanish.^[46] He received his nickname "Cigano" by showing up to practice with long hair placed in a ponytail,^[47] Cigano meaning Gypsy in Portuguese.^[45] The name is an allusion to a character from an old Brazilian soap opera, addressing the culture of the gypsies in Brazil.^[47] He is a Roman Catholic.^[7] He has also stated that as a child he hated soccer.^[48]

Gabriel Gonzaga-Nogueira^[2] (Portuguese pronunciation: [ɡabɾiˈew ɡõˈzaɡɐ]; born May 18, 1979), is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist^[3] who currently competes for the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He holds a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, is a former member of Chute Boxe Academy and now fights out of Ludlow, Massachusetts as a part of Team Link. Gonzaga won by a devastating head kick knockout at UFC 70 over MMA legend Mirko "Cro Cop" Filipović on April 21, 2007, which earned him a Heavyweight title shot with former five-time UFC Champion and UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture. He won a gold medal in the Ultra Heavyweight division at the 2006 Mundials, which is considered to be the top Brazilian Jiu Jitsu competition in the world.

Mixed martial arts career[link]

Gonzaga's Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) record is currently 13-6-0 and 8-5-0 in the UFC. He made his MMA debut on April 4, 2003 in Santos, Brazil against Cicero Costa, winning via submission due to punches in the first round.

Ultimate Fighting Championship[link]

He made his UFC debut at UFC 56, knocking out Kevin Jordan at 4:39 of the third round. However, Gonzaga had noted that his debut did not come without complications. Weeks before the fight, his pregnant wife started having complications with her pregnancy and lost one of the twins she was carrying. Gonzaga's obligations to his wife during her high risk pregnancy left him unable to train properly.^[4]

Gonzaga would later return at UFC 60 and win against Fabiano Scherner via TKO at the second round. At UFC 66 he would defeat Carmelo Marrero in the first round by armbar.

At UFC 70, Gonzaga knocked out Mirko "Crocop" Filipovic with a head kick, ironically Filipovic's own signature move. With the win, Gonzaga became the next contender for UFC Heavyweight Champion Randy "The Natural" Couture.

At UFC 74, Gonzaga lost to Randy Couture by TKO at the 1:37 mark of the third round.^[5]

Gonzaga returned to the Octagon to face the only man that had beaten him prior to the Randy Couture fight Fabricio Werdum at UFC 80, losing once again via TKO in the second round.^[6]

Gonzaga also fought at UFC 86 against Justin McCully. Early in the first round, McCully fell to the ground due to a powerful leg kick from Gonzaga. Gonzaga took to McCully's half guard, quickly passing to the mount position and winning by first round submission with an Americana from the mount.^[7]

At UFC 91 Gonzaga knocked out newcomer Josh Hendricks with a right hand at 1:01 of the first round.

Gonzaga then faced undefeated Heavyweight prospect Shane Carwin at UFC 96. In the first 30 seconds, Gonzaga caught Carwin with an uppercut and two left-handed punches, breaking his nose. The fight went to the ground, but Carwin quickly fought his way to his feet. Against the fence, Carwin pushed Gonzaga away and threw an overhand right that knocked Gonzaga out. The referee called the match at 69 seconds of round 1, handing Gonzaga his fourth loss.^[5]

At UFC 102 Gonzaga defeated Chris Tuchscherer via TKO at 2:27 of the first round.^[5] The fight, however, was controversial, as Gonzaga landed an illegal low blow that hurt Tuchsherer very badly. While Tuchsherer was able to continue after taking a full five minute rest, Gonzaga landed a powerful head kick and continued to dominate the rest of the fight, eventually finishing via strikes.

Gonzaga was set to fight Junior dos Santos at UFC 108, however it was reported that he had pulled out of the fight due to a staph infection.^[8]

The fight between Gonzaga and dos Santos eventually took place on March 21, 2010 at UFC LIVE: Vera vs. Jones, with Gonzaga losing via knockout in the first round.^[5]

Gonzaga was defeated by Brendan Schaub on October 23, 2010 at UFC 121 by unanimous decision. All three judges scored the fight 30-27 after Gonzaga was out-struck throughout all three rounds by Schaub.^[9] This was also the first bout in Gonzaga's professional career to go the distance.

Following the loss to Schaub, Gonzaga was released from the promotion.^[10] During his time in the UFC he posted a 7-5 record.

Post UFC[link]

On his Twitter account, Gonzaga stated that he would only compete in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu as of now. Recently on his Facebook page a fan asked him if he will still compete in MMA. He replied back, "Maybe". Gonzaga returned to action against Reality Fighting heavyweight champion Parker Porter.^[3][11] Gonzaga fought Porter on October 8 where he submitted him with an arm triangle choke in the third round, winning the Reality Fighting Heavyweight Championship.^[12][13]

Return to the UFC[link]

It was announced that Gonzaga recently signed a new, four fight contract with the Ultimate Fighting Championship. In his return bout, he faced Ednaldo Oliveira at UFC 142, replacing an injured Rob Broughton.^[14] Gonzaga won the fight via submission in the first round.

Gabriel Gonzaga was expected to face Shane del Rosario at UFC 146 on May 26, 2012.^[15] Gabriel was pulled from the bout against Shane Del Rosario replacing Antonio Silva who was originally scheduled to fight against Roy Nelson.^[16] Gonzaga later was forced out of the bout against Roy Nelson because of an injury; therefore, Gonzaga was then replaced by Dave Herman.^[17]

Luiz Gonzaga do Nascimento(Portuguese pronunciation: [lu'is gõ'zagɐ]) (Exu, December 13, 1912 — Recife, August 2, 1989)^[1] was a very prominent Brazilian folk singer, songwriter, musician and poet. Born in the countryside of Pernambuco (Northeastern Brazil), he is considered to be responsible for the promotion of northeastern music throughout the rest of the country. He is also known as the "king of baião" and "Gonzagão".

Gonzaga's son, Luiz Gonzaga do Nascimento Júnior, known as Gonzaguinha, born 1945, was also a noted Brazilian singer and composer. He was also a famous Brazilian freemason that composed Acacia Amarela (Yellow Acacia). The Luiz Gonzaga Dam was named in his honor.^[2][3][4]

Biography[link]

The son of a peasant and accordion player, Gonzaga was attracted to the 8-bass accordion at a very early age, but at that time he used to accompany his father by playing the zabumba (type of bass drum) and singing at parties and religious celebrations. He left home in 1930 to join the army, and toured Brazil with an army band until 1939. Gonzaga decided to remain in Rio de Janeiro with a recently purchased accordion. He used to perform in the streets and in bars, playing boleros, waltzes and tangos.

After noticing that the northeastern immigrants missed the music from their hometowns, he started to give listeners the sort of music they craved to hear: xaxados, baiões, chamegos and cocos. At Ary Barroso’s talent show, Luiz Gonzaga played his chamego "Vira e Mexe" was acclaimed by the audience and by the dreaded host, who gave him the highest score. After discovering this niche in the market, Gonzaga became a regular at radio shows and started making records. Gonzaga died of natural causes at the age of 76.

In 1943, he dressed up in typical northeastern costumes for the first time to perform live, and got hyped. Later on, as well as playing popular tunes on the accordion, he began to sing his own material, and his skills as a songwriter were revealed. His greatest hit ever, "Asa Branca" (written with Humberto Teixeira), was recorded in 1947 and covered countless times by many different artists. He worked on the radio until 1954, enjoying huge popularity. He is widely recognized for singlehandedly taking the baião style and the accordion to a wide audience, and for a time RCA (now BMG), his recording label, was almost exclusively dedicated to printing his singles and albums. During the 1960s, as the public taste shifted to bossa nova and iê-iê-iê, he found himself increasingly stranded from big city stages, so he toured the countryside, where his popularity never abated.

In the 1970s and 1980s, he slowly re-emerged, partly due to covers of his songs by famous artists like Geraldo Vandré, Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, his son Gonzaguinha and Milton Nascimento. Eve Marie Torres (born August 21, 1984)^[4][5] is an American dancer, model, and professional wrestler. She works for WWE on its Raw brand as Eve Torres, or simply Eve.^[1][2]

Torres began her career as a model and dancer. She danced for The Southern California Summer Pro League and went on to become a member of the National Basketball Association's Los Angeles Clippers Spirit Dance Team for the 2006–2007 season. She has also appeared on several television shows, including Show Me the Money, Sunset Tan, and Deal or No Deal.

In 2007, she won the 2007 Diva Search, earning a contract with WWE. She first appeared on WWE programming as a backstage interviewer in 2008, and also appeared in non-wrestling contests such as bikini contests and dance competitions. She later became a full-time wrestler in 2009, and was involved in feuds with Michelle McCool, Layla and Natalya. She also managed the tag team of Cryme Tyme. After being traded to the Raw brand in late 2009, she managed Chris Masters before winning the WWE Divas Championship in April 2010. She held the championship for 69 days, before losing it in June. After acting as the valet for R-Truth in late 2010, she won the Divas Championship for the second time at the 2011 Royal Rumble in January. Her second reign lasted until April 2011. In April 2012, she was appointed as Executive Administrator of Raw and SmackDown by General Manager John Laurinaitis.

Early life[link]

Torres was born in Boston, Massachusetts, but grew up in Denver, Colorado and is of Latin background (Nicaraguan decent), as well as German and Swedish.^[9][6][10] She has one younger brother, Phillip, who appeared on Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader? in October 2008 and won $100,000.^[11] She attended the University of Southern California on a full tuition scholarship.^[3]

Dancing and modeling career[link]

While attending the University of Southern California (USC), Torres appeared in commercials and music videos. Torres was the co-captain of the USC Fly Girls dance squad and created much of their choreography.^[3][12] She also danced for The Southern California Summer Pro League, the only summer league for National Basketball Association (NBA) players, in Long Beach, California.^[12] After graduating from college, she moved into dancing and modeling full-time.^[3] After reaching the tryout finals in previous years, Torres became a member of the NBA's Los Angeles Clippers Spirit Dance Team for the 2006–07 season.^[3][12] She also appeared on Show Me The Money.^[3]

World Wrestling Entertainment / WWE (2007–Present)[link]

WWE Diva Search (2007)[link]

In May 2007, Torres entered WWE's Diva Search.^[3][13] She was chosen by WWE officials as one of eight finalists from a group of 50.^[3] On October 29, 2007, in Philadelphia, live on Raw, she was crowned the 2007 WWE Diva Search winner, defeating finalist Brooke Gilbertsen and becoming an official WWE Diva.^[13][14] Following her win, she began training for her wrestling debut in WWE's developmental territory, Florida Championship Wrestling.^[3]

SmackDown (2008–2009)[link]

Videos promoting Eve's debut on SmackDown began airing on January 11, 2008.^[15] The promo aired for three weeks before Eve made her official debut on the February 1, 2008 episode of SmackDown interviewing former World Heavyweight Champion Batista.^[16] During early 2008, Eve participated in a "Diva Competition" contest to determine the top Diva on SmackDown, participating in a bikini contest, an obstacle course, and an arm wrestling competition before being eliminated.^{[17][18][19][20]} Eve appeared at WrestleMania XXIV as a Lumberjill in the BunnyMania match between Maria and Ashley against Beth Phoenix and Melina.^[8] Eve spent the rest of the year competing in similar contests, including a dance-off and a bikini contest, before participating in the Halloween Costume Contest on October 26 at the Cyber Sunday pay-per-view, where she was dressed as Raphael from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.^[21][22] On the 800th episode of Raw on November 3, 2008, Eve made her televised in-ring debut in a 16-Diva tag team match, which her team lost although she was never tagged in.^[23]

Her first main storyline began in early 2009, when she began a scripted feud with Michelle McCool after McCool attacked her.^[3][24] On the February 6 episode of SmackDown, Eve made her singles match debut in a losing effort against McCool via submission.^[25] Their feud continued for the next few months, with them competing against each other in singles and tag team matches.^[8][26] Eve then moved into a feud with Layla in mid-2009.^[3] After the pair competed in dance and arm wrestling competitions, Eve defeated Layla on the May 29 episode of SmackDown in a wrestling match.^[27][28][29] On the June 18 episode of Superstars, Eve pinned Layla once again. After the match, they both shook hands.^[30]
