Conversation in Brazilian Portuguese and Galician (Spain)
Conversation in Brazilian Portuguese and Galician, one of Spain's official languages. Galician and Portuguese are two Romance languages that belong to the same branch, just like Serbian and Croatian or Catalan and Occitan (France). I hope you're gonna enjoy it! :D Topics we discussed in this conversation: 1. Do Galicians and Brazilians understand the Portuguese? 2. The relationship between Catalan and Occitan (France). 3. Asian scripts. Era ...

Winemaking in Béarn France
Read the blog: www.eurodestination.com Photos at: www.flickr.com With the kind courtesy of Sebastien and Fabrice Bordenave, I was able to film their grape harvest for their Mostesquieu wine, a Jurancon wine which is prevalent in this part of France the Bearn region. I wasn't the only visitor that day, a group of school children were also there, learning about the ways of their region and probably of their long gone ancestors. I sensed a strong feeling of community here, both brothers and their families lived on the property alongside their parents, and grandparent, and all the harvest help was drawn from the local village of Monein. Many there had been involved in the grape harvest here for decades. Of particular note was that a number of the older folk spoke the Occitan dialect of Béarnese, a language related to the Gascon language. Needless to say I couldn't understand any of it, as my French is poor, but it sounded like Spanish to me. It is a language under threat, as many schools didn't allow it until recently. It benefitted from the fact that Béarn was an independent state in the 14th century, with its capital in the nearby city of Pau. All the grapes on this farm (which amounted to 9 ha's in total) were picked by hand, mainly because the hills were so steep and that a careful selection of grapes made for better wine. My thanks go again to the Bordenave family for opportunity of making this video. I have a set of photos for this region on my flickr page: www.flickr.com

"If That Language May Be Dying, Why Are You Studying It? By Thomas T. Field
Current interest in endangered languages provides an opportunity to reflect on the ways in which linguistics tackles the study of language. These are more varied than outsiders tend to assume and leave linguists uncertain about how they fit into CP Snows two cultures schema of science and the humanities. Professor Field will provide examples from his work on the development and current status of Gascon.

Road Trip to Lourdes, France (Our Lady of Lourdes)
Lourdes (Gascon Occitan Lorda or Lourde) is a commune in the Hautes-Pyrénées department in the Midi-Pyrénées region in south-western France. The former regional language of this area used to be Gascon Occitan (or Gasconha, Occitània which was the spoken language at the time of Saint Bernadette Soubirous), but has been largely supplanted by French as in many regions of France. Lourdes is a small market town lying in the foothills of the Pyrenees, famous for the Marian apparitions of Our Lady of Lourdes said to have occurred in 1858 to Bernadette Soubirous. At that time, the most prominent feature of the town was the fortified castle that rises up from a rocky escarpment at its centre.
