B0001 The Quantitative Reading of Latin poetry Bennett Introduction
Please visit my pages at sites.google.com Bennett's "The Quantitative Reading of Latin Poetry" is one of the better books on the subject for beginners, who are keen to learn how to pronounce Latin correctly, and to read Latin poetry in as authentic a manner as we know how, given our current state of scientific knowledge about Roman pronunciation. Since Bennett wrote this, not much has changed, the academic consensus remains the same - although many teachers at both secondary and university level persist in the mediaeval method of teaching Latin poetry by deliberately exaggerating the pronunciation of the ictus - a practice we know from the Romans themselves to be inauthentic. The text is available for free download from archive dot org.
