Palestine in UN General Assembly
The United Nations General Assembly has voted overwhelmingly to upgrade Palestine's status at the UN from "observer entity" to "observer non-member state" despite strong opposition by Israel and the US. On Thursday, the 193-member assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions at the UN headquarters in New York for a resolution approving the upgrade. Nine countries, including Canada, Israel, and the United States, voted against it. Speaking before the vote, the acting Palestinian Authority Chief, Mahmoud Abbas told the General Assembly that it was "being asked today to issue the birth certificate of Palestine..." The vote is seen as a long-sought victory for the Palestinians, but an embarrassing diplomatic defeat for the United States. Having earned the observer non-member status, Palestinians enjoy access to UN agencies and the International Criminal Court where they could file complaints against Israel. The upgrade also allows the Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies. The United States and Israel have spared no means for the past two years to stymie the Palestinians' efforts towards upgrading Palestine's status at the UN, arguing that it is only through negotiations with Israel that Palestinian statehood ambitions can yield. The US blocked Palestine's full membership bid at the UN Security Council last year, using its veto power. Following the Thursday vote, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, Susan Rice told ...

Mahmoud Abbas leaves for UN General Assembly
Acting PA Chief, Mahmoud Abbas is to leave for UN to attend the General Assembly. He is to upgrade Palestine's status, from observer entity to observer state. Such a move could boost Palestine's chances of joining additional UN bodies such as the International Criminal Court, where it could attempt to prosecute Israel. Officials and Residents React to UN's Palestinian Observer State Vote
The UN General Assembly voted to upgrade the status of Palestine; residents of the West Bank and Gaza Strip along with Israeli and Palestinian officials react. Full story: After the UN General Assembly voted to grant Palestinians a "non-member observer state" status, many across the West Bank and Gaza are still celebrating. [Assad Nassar, Resident of Hebron]: "My God make you victorious Abu Mazen, this is a Palestinian feast, for all the Palestinian people. Tonight we did not sleep, you see I am 50-years-old, and I did not sleep because we were dancing and celebrating, now we have a nation, thank God almighty." The Palestinian Authority and its President, Mahmoud Abbas, can now enjoy what many are calling symbolic. Former Palestinian minister Samir Abdallah approved, saying the Palestinian Authority may now move to enter the International Criminal Court. [Samir Abdallah, Former Palestinian Minister]: "The basic thing of this case is that now the Palestinian position is more clear and more supported according to the borders case, this decision gives the Palestinian leadership and nation a reference to the border case which Israel used to say all the time (about it), that these lands are not occupied lands but they are lands that there is conflict on. Now it is clear that it is occupied lands according to the International law." Some residents of Israeli settlements in the West Bank saw it as a loss for Israel. [Frank Balkin, Resident of Efrat]: "I think it will be a bit to ...

'UN Palestine state vote, historic event'
A prominent political commentator describes the UN General Assembly's vote to grant the Palestinians an upgraded status of non-member observer state as a 'historic event'. Palestinian optimism over UN observer status bid
Many Palestinians in Jerusalem have their eyes on New York ahead of a vital vote at the UN General Assembly on 29 November, which could give them observer status. It comes after Palestinian National Authority President Mahmoud Abbas failed to get full UN state membership last year. Abbas insists observer status would help the Palestinians achieve a just peace with Israel.

Palestinians will seek justice for Israeli crimes: Michael Maloof
A political analyst tells Press TV that the new Palestine's membership in the General Assembly enables Palestinians to take their issues to the International Criminal Court and this is the thing the Israelis have feared the most. On November 29, the 193-member General Assembly voted 138-9 with 41 abstentions at the UN headquarters in New York to upgrade Palestine's status to non-member observer state. The observer state status grants Palestinians access to UN agencies and the International Criminal Court, where they can file formal complaints against the Israeli regime. The upgrade also allows Palestinians to participate in debates at the UN and improves their chances of joining UN agencies. Press TV has conducted an interview with Michael Maloof, former Pentagon official, to further discuss the issue.
