Marc Faber - Middle Class Consumption in Asia and the Emerging Markets
SuperReturn Middle East - www.informaglobalevents.com Marc Faber (Editor and Publisher, The Gloom, Boom & Doom Report) interviewed by Dori Dana-Haeri (Founder & Managing Partner, Above Wealth) at SuperReturn Middle East 2012 in Dubai. We have a rising class of affluent consumers in Asia. Society is changing - young, middle class consumers driving the economy. Nobody knows what the world will be like in 5 years so, given ths uncertainty, we'd better be diversified. Gold is an honest currency which cannot be manipulated; you cannot print it and there's a limited supply of it. Looking at gold as a currency as opposed to a commodity. Natural resources are likely to cause geopolitical issues. For example, who owns the rights to water from a river that originates in China but flows through many countries? A big issue in the future will be between the Middle East and Central Asia in terms of shared borders - tensions will rise.

Ruchir Sharma on the Latest and Greatest of Emerging Markets and Breakout Nations!
Follow us @ twitter.com twitter.com Welcome to Capital Account. Mexico has reportedly elected a new leader, the opposition candidate from the former ruling party, who is promising to put the country back in the big leagues of emerging economies. We'll talk to author of "Breakout Nations: In Pursuit of the Next Economic Miracles," Ruchir Sharma, about what it takes to be an emerging economy and where some of the up-and-coming countries are likely to emerge from. The last decade was a great decade for emerging market economies. Mr. Sharma points out that pretty much every single one of these countries did well, between 2003 and 2007, where the average GDP growth rate in these countries almost doubled. The peak was in 2007 when only three of the world's 183 economies contracted...it gave birth to investment opportunities, economic miracles, and of course acronyms - the BRICS most famously, but also the MINTS, the CIVETS. But even if developing countries lend themselves to acronyms our guest says they can't be lumped together economically - each tells its own unique story. Not only that, but now as some of the fastest growing emerging markets mature, and global growth slows with easy money liquidity drying up, and with central bank stimulus possibly reaching the end of its rope at a time when crises in Europe, for example, are dragging economies down, where could the NEXT emerging market boom come from? Who are the up and comers? And let's talk commodities, specifically ...

Feb. 28 (Bloomberg) -- Jim Rogers, chairman of Rogers Holdings, talks about his investment strategy for global stocks and commodities. THE ARMY OF LUCK, OR THE GLOBAL PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS
The Maneki Neko (jap., literally Beckoning Cat; aka Lucky Cat, Money Cat) is a common Japanese figurine which is believed to bring luck, attract customers and bring prosperity. The Lucky Cat waves with the raised left paw and holds a historic coin in front of itself with the right one. The Lucky Cat as talisman and selling product is wide-spread in Asia and meanwhile almost all over the world.
Luck is associated here with monetary and material prosperity.
For tourists the Lucky Cat became a kind of pop style Manga character which appears in growing numbers in western private households. As kitschy-petite like exotic souvenir it refers to a certain idea of western lifestyle.
The material element of the installation»The Global Pursuit of Happiness, or: The Army of Luck« is the »Lucky Cats' Matrix«. It contains 520 shiny golden XXL Lucky Cats made of plastics which are arranged in 40 rows and 13 columns on a ramp-like stand made of aluminum (W 8 m, H 3 m, D 2 m).
Visitors experience the Lucky Cats' Matrix as a dot-matrix display which consists of 520 waving paw grid points as its »pixels«. In each cat a servomotor is built in to control the paws move exactly in position and speed.
The visitors are requested imaginarily by the cats to interact as users: "Your concept of happiness is our lucky command. Write it on the keyboard".
Words and sentences up to 40 characters can be put in and are displayed clearly visible with the paws letter by letter as sliding text marquee. So to say, the users »choreograph« the Lucky Cats performance wordwise. Literally it is the »inscription« of an idea of happiness or a wish in the Lucky Cats' bodies by moving their paws forward and backward.
For users, the Lucky Cats become multiplied »avatars« in the world of chance and happiness. But the Lucky Cats are also able to perform spontaneously as well: they can show 25 different salutatory and signalizing gestures as well as mass movements like the »Mexican Wave« or an ecstatic »hyperkinesis«. Every displayed sentence triggers audio events – sound samples of mass or group events, like entertainment shows, political speeches, demonstrations, sport events, parades, accidents, etc. from the beginning of the last century until today. The sounds express auditorily different states of mind, like joy, euphoria, desire, fear, hate, aggression and resignation, astonishment, outrage, pain, panic, desperation and fanatical excitement. The sounds are played in random order and unpredictable combinations. Different contexts and changing settings are emerging.
Are the Lucky Cats »one-armed bandits«? Or is it a gesture in the context of a political or religious movement? Is it a just a happy waving of the fun-loving, hedonistic society? Or is the assembly of Lucky Cats a revolutionary deployment of »wish machines« as »army of luck« or is it just another marketing campaign?
The lined up, gold-reflecting mass of the Lucky Cats in the matrix appears almost as an insubstantially copy-paste-animation. The Lucky Cats in the matrix as an industrial made product become an »ornament of the masses« for repetetive-stererotype and globalized-industrialized ideals. Do we need more and more Lucky Cats to generate more and more prosperity for more and more people?

The RAW Timelapse Tutorial - INTRODUCTION
***NOTE: All opinions & perspectives shared come from my experience as a shooter and may not be the best way of doing things. I am simply sharing MY WORKFLOW when both capturing and processing RAW time-lapses similar to the ones seen in the INTRODUCTORY video below***.
Target Audience
The target audience of this series will be the independent filmmaker who is open to learn. In the series, I hope to give a thorough breakdown of how to shoot RAW time-lapses. There is no perfect formula to get incredible shots other than practice, practice & more practice. These shorts will simply give you a look at how I approach shooting time-lapses. Comments and recommendations for future videos are encouraged.
This series is a work in progress and will continue to evolve as I learn more. Below you can find the current content breakdown:
1: Introduction
This video will introduce the series as well as showcase the types of shots that will be present in the time-lapse series.
2: Kit Breakdown / Software & Hardware Solutions – Introduction
In this video, I will give a quick preview of what equipment I use when shooting time-lapses.
3. A Closer Look at my ‘Tool Kit’
In this section, I will look closer at my ‘go to’ equipment and also break down a few different kit configurations depending on shot requirements as well as shooting conditions.
4. PRE-PRODUCTION — (Story, Scouting & Scheduling)
Pre-production is by far the most important part of the process for not only time-lapse photography but filmmaking as a whole. By being prepared from the beginning and by having a well laid out plan, production & post-production will ALWAYS go way smoother. There are a few specific areas that I will be investigating as part of the pre-production phase.
- Searching for Locations.
- Prepping Gear.
- Shot Lists.
5. PRODUCTION
This section will be the most extensive and will encompass a wide array of possible time-lapse setups. For a list of the current tutorials to be covered in the series, please see below:
- Camera Settings/Modes: Understanding the Basic Functions of a DSLR
- Static Time-lapses
- Motion Controlled Time-lapses
- Day to Night Time-lapses
- Astro Time-lapses
- HDR Time-lapses
- Walking Time-lapses
- Bulb Ramping
6. POST PRODUCTION
For this section, I will be covering a few different methods for processing the time-lapses as well as cover some of the ways in which to remove flicker from your time-lapses. I will also be focusing on a few composting techniques.
Some of the programs/codecs I will be covering include:
- LR Timelapse, Lightroom, After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere, FCP 7, Quicktime 7, GB Deflicker, CHV Time Collection, ProRes vs CineForm, Photomatrix, GBS Timelapse & more.
NOTE: I will be spending a substantial amount of time discussing how to remove flicker using various programs as it is a highly requested topic.
7. Distribution: An Expanding Market Opportunity
The demand for online content is increasing. Grants for web series are becoming available. Discounts that used to exist for online content, such as discounted actor rates, are quickly disappearing as many are seeing the added value in online content. Crowd funding is also becoming a viable option for funding. With this shift, it is key to create an online presence — and get your work seen.
Paying it Forward
The gap between low quality and high quality video is quickly closing and this quality content is becoming available at a fraction of the price. It is becoming even more important to find ways to stand out from the crowd.
Now the main reason I am asking anyone that learns from the tutorials to either post their work or post something they learn along the way is because of the impact this work could have upon someone else. By posting your content online, you may be posting content that a viewer can relate to. You may even inspire someone or speak to them on a deeper level that could inevitably cause a life altering event. Who knows?!?
With this new market that is emerging, many people now have access and it is becoming even more important to find your niche. There are a few things you can do to stand out. Do work that relates to personal experiences. Continue to work hard and be passionate about the work you do — no matter what you are working on. Do the best possible job you can do on EVERY job. If you continually grow and work hard, good things will happen. It doesn’t take much to push yourself as a filmmaker. I’ve found that it is actually harder to be complacent!
Conclusion
Although only a quick look, the above post breaks down what I will be covering in the tutorials. If there is anything you would like to see added to the list or any advice on how you would like the series to be approached, please share in the comment section below!
NOTE: All videos will be available on The RAW Timelapse group. To either share your experiences or work, please join. https://vimeo.com/groups/payitforward Thanks!

Absolute Body Control
Epopoeia of the Food and Drink of the United States (A Dream in Hell)
1
Beautiful like a baby calf is the song of chicken fried with batter,
the long red and white picnic tablecloth is finer than the finest lady’s legs, the finest thing there is to embark upon a heaping bowl of coleslaw,
shrimp from the gulf coast are delicious, gushing with wine as if feeling,
like honey mussels, in Redmond or Olympia, harvested by fishwives, in the seaweed,
and the glory of banjos in Baton Rouge, their juices course through them like
ageless autumn lemons,
like mom's fragrant pot pie, chocked full of juicy stew, widens the gullet,
and, baked, cries out blooming peach tree blossoms.
2
What would you say to some barbecue ribs, burning hot
grilled on a charcoal fire in June on the banks of a man made lake,
pines or cedar trees that sum up the dramatic atmosphere of a
damp sunset at Lake Lanier or Stone Mountain,
or to a clam chowder, whose name is inextricably related to Manhattan or
Rhode Island or New England?
No, you hunt quail and you grill it, just like you hear honky-tonk or stars and stripes
at the feet of Mount Rushmore, and fried catfish along the Chattahoochee
where it leaps into the sacred sizzling skillet, superbly fine
river fish, makes fishing boats rich while the sisters Lee,
as if in pain, sweat what's human and divine on the grand antique family fiddle.
3
Tremendous turkeys that smell like summer, almost human, autumn shades of
walnut or chestnut, I eat them everywhere, and in D.C. I kiss them,
like the vats where barley sighs like the prettiest girl in Jersey
raising her skirt underneath the lights of the big apple, same
as the roof off of a block party with streamers and flags where we drink in red plastic cups
a substantial whiskey and beer,
or the love mattress, upon which we set sail and sighing face each other and
the night’s tremendous oceans, into whose horrible darkness,
black and tenacious flows the bloody calla lily,
or the teardrop that falls in our moths as we joyfully sing.
4
Napa Valley wine is enormous and dark in the California sunset, and when
it's in your blood, nostalgia
and the apology to heroism sing in the wheels of spurs to
the beast’s hide, dancing to the fundamental tune of backwater rapids
against the frothy red glare.
5
Nicely aged bourbon bellows in its cellars like a great sacred cow,
and St. Louis will be golden, like a rib-eye on the grill, all over
the bloodied paths towards Oklahoma, autumn's
guitar will weep like a soldier's widow,
and we'll remember everything we didn’t do and could have and
should have and wanted to, like a madman
staring down a town's abandoned well,
watching, ear shattering, the engines of youth rev down dawn's
wide gust
crumbling like memories in the abyss.
6
The saddle glows all across the Midwest, mountain range to mountain range, booming like a great combine with its 20 foot span, booming
like a cow auctioneer or a righteous pastor or tornado season,
lasso raised up against the sky
on top of a guffaw, a hyuck or a yeehaw, splashed with sun and hard work, where manure perfumes dung heaps like a domestic god, with tremendous balls like a widow.
7
A mighty log cabin with its open yard, apple trees, front porch
scented with remote antiquity,
where the bootlegger and his still would sing, drop by drop, a sense of eternity into
the water, recalling old ancestors with its tremulous pendulum,
exists, same as in Madison as in Franklin or Fairview or Springfield,
although it’s the little town of Hodgenville Kentucky that most proudly proclaims the wooden troughs or pig iron pots, wide open spaces, the Appalachians, the original wild west, civil war and emancipation, in little log cabins,
from Tennessee to Ohio, who express it proudly in tremendous language, eating ears of pigs eating ears of corn.
8
Because, if it's necessary to stuff yourself with hot dogs in a Detroit Coney before dying,
on a rainy day, blessed with a strawberry milkshake from fresh upstate dairy, and smoke, bathing in conversation, friends and the munchies, launching yourself into terrible leaps and bounds, blubbering, savoring the booming chili in spoonfuls and fries,
it's also necessary to get your meat from the Kansas City stockyards in March, when the pigs
look like televangelists and the televangelists look like swine or hippopotamus,
and wash the food down with some fiery sips from a short glass,
yes... in Dallas or Fort Worth the corn tortillas look like the local ladies: wide white waists and sleepy half moon eyes, since, ticklish and cuddly,
they turn their faces, and let themselves be kissed, unendingly on either end.
9
And the chit'lins, swimming and searing in broth and tabasco, and the cornbread that moaned in broiling bacon fat, is blessed where thunder rolls in wide whips, along the Mississippi, between one drink and the next,
but it never surpasses a gamy partridge, savored in the dry underbrush of July,

The Emerging Markets, By The Numbers
We all know that China, India and the new Soviet Union (er, we mean Russia) are rapidly becoming significant consumer markets, perhaps even becoming the most important consumer markets. Here's a fascinating video put together by General Motors that illustrates the explosion of activity in the emerging regions.

Apala Lahiri Chavan talks about the issues in involved in designing for emerging markets - Download the free poster and a white paper www.humanfactors.com Transcript: Designing for Emerging Markets with Apala Lahiri Chavan, MA, MSc, CUA I'm Apala, and I had head a practice in cross cultural design and design for emerging markets. Some people think that you just need to translate the language of your design, switch currencies, and maybe reformat some fields, but actually it usually does not work like that. For example, if you sell deodorants and count the over four billion armpits to be deodorized, that is between India and China, you might feel it's a done deal as long as the product is available in those markets. Yeah, maybe with local language text on the packaging, but, alas, the reality of the ecosystem of your consumers in India and China are very different and very complex and, hence, need much more to be done to actually get the two billion consumers to use your product. I worked on a dialysis unit to be used at home, which worked in America just fine, but in Columbia and India, the story was different. Why? Well, the caregivers who were critical to the successful use of the dialysis unit was so much more relaxed just as a cultural attribute. So what was the impact of that relaxed attitude? Instead of heating the solution to the exact temperature, they would often keep the bag with the solution on the roof to heat in the sunlight or wrap the bag with a blanket for ...
