Flatt and Scruggs: Ain't Gonna Work Tomorrow and Home Sweet Home
Please enjoy two songs -- "I Ain't Gonna Work Tomorrow" and "Home Sweet Home" -- which feature some fine 5-string banjo picking by the master of them all, Earl Scruggs. Earl was the innovator of the famous 3 finger Bluegrass style. He first played with Bill Monroe in the mid forties, and then joined up with Lester Flatt to form the Foggy Mountain Boys. The rest is history. I saw Flatt and Scruggs live on several occasions. Earl, in his eighties, is still performing today. I think he should be honored for innovation in American music, right along with Bill Monroe. Anyone may purchase DVDs of these old Martha White Grand Ole Opry shows at earlscruggs.com, click on Merchandise, and scroll down to find them. I have no association with the DVDs or with Flatt and Scruggs, except as a long-time fan.

Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs - Foggy Mountain Breakdown (Original 1949)
One of the greatest instrumentals ever recorded. The 1949 recording was used in the movie Bonnie and Clyde and then re-recorded after the film. The original version, in my opinion, was far superior to the more familier version that most people know and play today. It's faster, there were no breaks and the noting was more complicated. Earl Scruggs at his very best.

Jimmy Brown the Newsboy - Flatt and Scruggs
Earl Scruggs is the great innovator and master of the 5-string banjo; but many do not know that he was (is) also excellent on the guitar. This song, Jimmy Brown the Newsboy, features Earl on lead guitar. Earl said that he learned a lot about guitar from his friend and neighbor, Mama Maybelle Carter. His style is very similar, except for finger movement. Enjoy! Flatt & Scruggs - Get In Line Brothers (1951)
Lester Flatt and Earl Scruggs met as members of Bill Monroe's band, the Blue Grass Boys, in 1946. The two left that band early in 1948, and within a few months had formed their own group, the Foggy Mountain Boys. Scruggs' banjo style and Flatt's rhythm guitar style as well as his vocals gave them a distinctive sound that won them many fans. In 1955 they became members of the Grand Ole Opry. Many of the songs on their albums are credited to "Certain and Stacey". These songs were in fact written by Flatt, Scruggs, and various other members of the Foggy Mountain Boys. Certain and Stacey are the maiden names of the wives of Flatt and Scruggs (Louise Certain, wife of Earl Scruggs, and Gladys Stacey, wife of Lester Flatt). Scruggs, who had always shown progressive tendencies, experimented on duets with saxophonist King Curtis and added songs by the likes of Bob Dylan to the group's repertoire. Flatt, a traditionalist, did not like these changes, and the group broke up in 1969. Following the breakup, Lester Flatt founded the Nashville Grass and Scruggs lead the Earl Scruggs Revue. Flatt died in 1979 at the age of 64. Scruggs still performs occasionally, as his health permits. Flatt and Scruggs were elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1985. In 2003, they ranked #24 on CMT's 40 Greatest Men of Country Music, one of only four non-solo artists to make the list (Eagles, Alabama, and Brooks & Dunn are the others). In the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, the band formed by the ...

Flatt & Scruggs playing: Randy Lynn Rag
This is my favorite bluegrass band of all time. This is rare footage of a USO show (for the military) some time in the 60's. This video shows Hylo Brown playing bass w/ the rest of the standard F&S; line up: Paul Warren on fiddle, Earl and Lester on banjo and guitar respectively, Curly Seckler on mandolin, and Josh Graves on dobro. Here you can also see Earl sporting his '34 Granada w/it's Bow-Tie finger board which he had for a short time in the 60's.
