Who are the Illyrians?
"An extinct Indo-European language spoken in Illyria and known only from scattered personal and geographical names preserved in Greek and Roman sources." dictionary.reference.com "They spoke a language of which almost no trace has survived. That is belonged to the family of Indo-European languages has been deduced from the many names of Illyrian peoples and places preserved in Greek and Latin records, both literary and epigraphic. We cannot be sure that any of them actually called themselves Illyrians: in the case of most of them it is near certain they did not." (John Wilkes, THE ILLYRIANS, p3) "In general the Illyrians have tended to be recognized from a negative standpoint, in that they were manifestly not Celts, Dacians or Thracians, or Greeks or Macedonians, their neighbours on the north, east and south respectively." (John Wilkes, THE ILLYRIANS, p3) "many Greek and Roman writers seem to vie with each other in expressing their contempt and detestation for Illyrians." (John Wilkes, THE ILLYRIANS, p3) "As 'savages' or 'barbarians' on the northern periphery of the classical world, even today Illyrians barely make the footnotes in most versions of ancient history and more often than not they are simply ignored." (John Wilkes, THE ILLYRIANS, p4) "The Illyrians of DALMATIA, PANNONIA and one part of MOESIA SUPERIOR were not a pure race. The earliest population of these lands was Thracian. Then came the Illyrians, who enslaved it. Later appeared the Celts, who mixed with the ...

The True Illyrian History
Illyrian state was considered from the classical sources, Illyrian opposed to Dardanian , Taulanti, etc, where its rulers were referred as Illyrians. According to Fanula Papazoglu, the Illyrian Kingdom began towards the end of the 5th Century BC with King Sirrhas, and continued without a break till the 2nd century BC, when the Romans took prisoner the last of the Illyrian Kings, Genthios. The most glorious pages of Illyrian history began with the rule of King Pleuratus, around 260 BC, and was continued with the rule of his son Agron. During this time the Illyrian state found itself in the center between Macedonia, Issa, and various northern Greek political unions and the new factor emerging in the area, Rome.

Ancient Rome XI - The Illyrian Wars and the Final Gallic Invasion
This is the eleventh ofmany chapters in History with a Twist of Lime's look on "The Historical History of Ancient Rome." This chapter looks at the two easy wars Rome won against the Illyrian civilization across the Adriatic in the Balkan Mountains, the first (229-228 BC) against Queen Teuta and her Illyrian Kingdom, and the second (220 BC) against Demetrius of Pharos and the client state that the Romans themselves placed in Illyria to keep situations under control. It also delves into the Gallic invasion that occurred in-between (225 BC), which proved to be the last straw for Rome and convinced them to subjugate all land owned by the Gauls south of the Alps. Editor's Note: The comment made at 2:10 needs some clarification. The Illyrians were not of Greek descendants, per say, but were highly influenced politically, socially, and geographically by Greece. While their origins were slightly different, possibly in the area of modern-day Hungry which was occupied by Celtic tribes during this time, they evolved to be similar to the Greeks, and as with the upcoming Macedonian Wars, were usually regarded under the same turf as their neighbors to the south. I apologize if there was any confusion from the statement made in the video, and I am planning on remaking the narration when time permits. As this is one of many chapters being produced over this project, I would invite you to watch the other chapters dealing with the history of Ancient Rome. They can be viewed seamlessly ...

ILLYRIANS - THE OLD HARAHVAITI
2500 years ago Herodotus in his history wrote that in the region of today's northern Croatia lives a people who claim to be the cousins of the Medes who live on the region of Elam in today's western Iran: "West of Danube lives the Sikin people (city Sisak below Zagreb), they wear clothing like that of the Medes and Scythians (from city Susa below Zagros Mountians). The boarders of this land stretches almost to Venice on the Adriatic Sea. Sikins claim to have migrated from Media, but how can this be, I cannot understand but in history anything is possible". This fact talks about the connection between the people of todays Iran and Illyrians. This historical Herodotus clearly says, that the same people lived from Indus valley to the Alps. Therefore, Illyrians, Dalmatians, Sarmatians, are the same as Elamates, Medes and Parsis, one and the same roots of the Harahvaiti. Toponyms of rivers, cities, mountains, from Indus river all the way to the Alps confirms these claims. The Harahvaiti tribes lived in the regions of grand valleys from the Alps to the Urals and Himalayas. The fact is, the awareness of the common origin of Croats and Iranians still lives in Croatia to this day, although the real origin of these claims were unknown.

The Illyrian Emperors of Rome (part 1): The Barbarian Legions of the Empire
Albanians want to claim even the Roman empire as Albanian, by showing that Illyrians became Roman Emperors. The reality is that at a low point in Roman history, barbarians were taken and made into soldiers. And there was nothing glorious about these soldiers. ****** 'Under the Julian emperors, the occidental legions were still composed principally of natives of Italy. From the time of Vespasian that situation gradually ended. The Italians then were assigned principally only to the Praetorian Guard in Rome. The legions were filled from the provinces in which they were stationed; even the Germans, to judge from the evidence of the inscriptions, were enlisted in them in increasing numbers. In one of the inscriptions that has come down to us, a Praetorian speaks just as Vergil has spoken of the barbarian legions. And so it was, according to their blood, but by spirit, custom, and language the legions were now recruited from the national groups of the empire there were already Romanized and were becoming completely so in the service, despite their barbarian origins.' (Hans Delbrück, History of the Art of War: The Barbarian Invasions, p 162) 'The Roman legions continued to exist in name, but their character changed. They declined to a weak militia. Besides such degenerate legions (limitanei), there existed a few others that retained their military efficiency by adopting the system of the barbarian mercenary units. The Joviani and the Herculians of Diocletian are examples ...

The ILLYRIAN EMPERORS of ROME and BYZANTINE EMPIRE
The Illyrians, exploiting the privileges of allegiance to Rome, moved up the ranks rather quickly and eventually ruled the empire. Emperors of Illyrian origin reigned in both the Roman and Byzantine empires. ILLYRIAN-ROMAN EMPERORS Claudius II - Gothicus, as he was also known, reigned for a short period from 268-270 AD. He was born in Dardania in 214. He was a Roman officer in the army and upon the death of the Roman emperor Gallenius in 268 was proclaimed emperor by the soldiers and was affirmed by the Roman senate. His reigned was highlighted by several military campaign victories over the invading Goths (Germanic tribe) and for this he named known as Gothicus. He died on the throne in 270. Aurelian - Aurelian reigned from 270-275 AD. Born in Moesia in 214. He received high military status under the reign of Claudius II. Aurelian's emphasis was to restore the general welfare and unity of the empire and was given the title, Restitutor Orbis, or Restorer of the Empire. He commissioned a wall to enclose the city of Rome, but was assassinated by some of his officers in 275 on a expedition to Persia before it was completed. Probus - He reigned from 276-282 AD. He was born in Pannonia. As a Roman officer he kept the Germanic tribes at bay. After the murder of his rival, Probus assumed the throne. He led many successful military campaigns and was known as a military emperor and would eventually see the same fate as Aurelian as Probus was also killed by some of his officers in ...

Ancient Illyrian tribe of Mirdita
Mirdita has a great glorious history. It has lived since in the period of Noelit. Based on archeological excavation Mirdita has Illyrian origin Later on Miridta is involved in principality of Arber that has been mentioned as the first mediaeval Albanian State 1190-1216. As the founder of this state is known Progoni and later on Gjini and Dhimiter. Nderfandina is known as the most important center of this principality. For this was spoken clearly by the emblem of Arber found carved on a stone in the Catholic Church of Saint Maria. Foreign Scholars have written much more about Mirdita. One of the famous British writers Edit Durham has written Embelem of Mirdita has been as a sun with its beams.
