The War of the Roses (1455 - 1487) was fought between the House of Lancaster (emblem red rose) & House of York (emblem white rose). Head of the House of York was King Richard III. Henry Tudor headed the House of Lancaster. He had a minor claim to the throne. His grandfather, Owen Tudor was a page in Henry V's court. Richard's claim came from a disinherited female line!
August 22, 1485, Richard III was killed on Bosworth Field, the last English king to die in battle. Legend states Richard III's crown was found on the battlefield, under a hawthorn bush & Henry Tudor was crowned with it.

Five Tudor monarchs sat on the throne of England and Ireland from 1485 to 1603. The family earned their royal rights through strategic planning and battlefield prowess, and kept them because of intellect, strength and sheer determination. The Tudors, one of England’s most powerful and famous royal dynasties, knitted together a fragmented and small island nation that became one of the world’s financial, colonial and technological superpowers.

Elizabeth Tudor, daughter of the ill-fated Queen Anne Boleyn and temperamental King Henry VIII, was never meant to rule the country. Yet, when her time came, she didn’t stumble under the weight of the English crown.
Elizabeth was perhaps the most intelligent, forward-thinking monarch who ever sat on the throne before or since. Her reign is responsible for the strength of the Royal Navy, the cultivation of fine arts, the long-term stability and safety of her nation from foreign attacks, and the first steps toward international colonization.

HENRY VII - founded Tudor dynasty. Reign: 23 years, 7 months & 28 days.
In 1486 Henry VII married Elizabeth of York, unifying the houses of York & Lancaster. She would bear Henry VII seven children. Her father was King Edward IV, legitimizing the Tudor dynasty. Henry adopted the Tudor Rose incorporating the White Rose of York & Red Rose of Lancaster. He brought stability, encouraging trade rather than warfare. Henry VII was very careful with money introducing many taxes, meaning he died a very wealthy man.
HENRY VIII - feared monarch. Reign: 37 years, 9 months & 7 days.
Sixth child of Henry VII & Elizabeth of York. Highly educated he was prepared for the church., but after his brother Arthur died aged 15, Henry was groomed for kingship. Unlike his father he spent money recklessly. When young he excelled at sports, including jousting, hunting & real tennis. Henry VIII was very religious & obsessed with providing male heirs, marrying six times.
Henry VIII's annulment of his marriage to Catherine of Aragon caused a major rift with Pope Clement VII & the church in Rome. The Pope excommunicated Henry VIII.
The Dissolution of the Monasteries helped reduce the Catholic Church's power. Henry VIII took possession of monastic lands, becoming head of the church in England. Despite the rift with Rome, Henry VIII considered himself Catholic & brutally suppressed Protestants.
Henry VIII died in debt after squandering his father Henry VII's fortune.
EDWARD VI - boy king. Reign: 6 years, 5 months & 7 days.
Edward VI was 9 when he became king, his mother was Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife. During his reign the Church of England, created by Henry VIII's split from Rome, became Protestant.
Due to his youth the kingdom was governed by a "Regency Council", lead by his uncle, Edward Seymour, the 1st Duke of Somerset, who ruled as "Lord Protector of the Realm". There was unrest in the council. Thomas Seymour, his brother, was beheaded for treason, making him even more unpopular. In 1549 after a coup, John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland, took control. Edward Seymour was imprisoned & soon executed.
Edward VI died 1553, aged 15, probably from tuberculosis. On his deathbed Edward VI named the Protestant heirs of his aunt Mary Tudor as successors, likely influenced by John Dudley.
LADY JANE GREY - an unfortunate political pawn. Reign: a few days.
On the death of Edward VI, John Dudley declared Mary Tudor's granddaughter, Lady Jane Grey England's Queen. She was married to Dudley's son, Lord Guilford Dudley meaning he kept his hands on power. Soon Mary, Henry VIII's eldest daughter seized the throne. Lady Jane Grey was sentenced to "be burned alive on Tower Hill or beheaded as the Queen pleases". She was beheaded aged just 17.
MARY I - a Catholic. Reign: 5 years, 3 months & 29 days.
Mary I's mother was Catherine Of Aragon, Henry VIII's first wife. Mary overturned Edward VI's religious reforms re-establishing Roman Catholicism. Widespread persecution of Protestants, led her to be named "Bloody Mary".
Aged 37, Mary I married Philip II of Spain, attempting to provide a Catholic heir & prevent Protestant Elizabeth succeeding her. This was unpopular, as it was seen as a step toward Spain gaining control in England. It was a childless & unhappy marriage. Philip viewed it as a political union, but Mary had feelings towards him.
ELIZABETH I - popular Queen. Reign 44 years, 4 months & 5 days.
Her mother was Anne Boleyn, Henry VIII's second wife. Elizabeth's long rule brought stability & she established the English Protestant Church with herself as its head. She sought to reign by counsel, taking advice from wise & trusted advisers. She was extremely cautious, one of her mottoes was "video et taceo", which means "I see, & say nothing". The strategy of often doing nothing, meant Elizabeth was not drawn into misalliances. She applied this not only to politics, but also to her marital status. She never married!
Elizabeth I was highly educated writing: English, Latin, Italian, French & Greek. Never marrying, she had many suitors, probably her favorite was Robert Dudley. Maybe they would have married, but there was opposition from the England's nobility.
Elizabeth I died 1603, ending the 118 year Tudor Reign.
