Want to be a marine biologist? (SAIL by AWOLNATION)
Remember how everyone wanted to be a marine biologist at some point while growing up? Well, this video pays tribute to the wonderful and REAL world of marine biology. (Also, please keep in mind, we are actually working in these clips!) Please share this video, especially with people who may consider marine science as a career! Hopefully, this makes their decision a little easier, and we are always recruiting :) This video would not have been possible were it not for the amazing people (many of whom are featured here) that make working as a field researcher on the island of Moorea, French Polynesia so special an experience. Featured researchers are studying various aspects of coral reef community ecology, and they are based out of the University of Florida, California State University-Northridge, the University of California-Santa Barbara, and Victoria University of Wellington. Inside the Lines Marine Biology Documentary
Take the plunge into the cold waters off the coast of California and you will be amazed. "Inside the Lines" is one of the first documentaries to show the effects of marine protection by examining the biological effects inside and outside the boundary lines. In March 2009, a 3 person team of budding marine scientists started seeing interesting things on their dives inside a Marine Reserve on Catalina Island, CA. One diver decided to film their adventures. After reviewing initial footage of fish behaving like puppy dogs inside the reserve, the decision was made to craft a film with a message. "Inside the Lines" gets its name from the amazing biological effects that occur within the imaginary lines of the marine reserve where the footage was shot. Song: "Jeffrey's World" by the Van Burens "Inside the Lines" will feature new original music by the Van Burens. "Inside the Lines" will be entering into the film festival circuit this fall. A Sea Biscuit's Life
This video shows the life cycle of the sea biscuit Clypeaster subdepressus and is part of my master's thesis project at the Biosciences Institute of University of São Paulo.
We collected adults from sand beds of São Sebastião Channel (São Sebastião, SP, Brazil) and induced gamete release (eggs and sperm). We did the fertilization in vitro and followed the embryonic development in the laboratory, under light microscopy. Embryos become swimming larvae, approximately 0.2 mm wide, which we fed with microalgae until metamorphosis. A diminute sea biscuit grows inside the larva. When the minuscule podia and spines are formed the larva sinks and undergoes metamorphosis. The juvenile sea biscuit resorbs the larval tissue and begins to explore its new habitat, between sand grains.
Scientific version of the video (aka article):

We did the footage in the Marine Biology Center of University of São Paulo (CEBIMar-USP), located in São Sebastião, SP, Brazil, northern shore of State of São Paulo.

Dance your PhD- Christin Murphy
Hydrodynamic trail detection in marine organisms Hydrodynamic trails are generated when objects move though a fluid medium. These vortices provide robust, persistent stimuli that can convey spatial and temporal information. Facial vibrissae, or whiskers, in phocid seals, and antennae in lobsters contain receptors that detect waterborne vibrations and hydrodynamic trails. This is critical for prey capture and predator avoidance, allowing hunting and navigation in dark or murky waters. In this piece, there is interplay between the detection of hydrodynamic trails by organisms at different trophic levels in the marine environment. The movement of the lobsters generates hydrodynamic signals with spinning vortex structures, conveying information about their locomotion and spatial location. These signals propagate through the fluid medium and are detected by the whiskers of a nearby seal. The receptors on the whiskers of this animal enable it to track and localize its potential prey. However, the antennae of the lobsters also possess hydrodynamic receptors. The lobsters sense the predators approach and attempt to escape. Once a shark begins swimming overhead, its hydrodynamic trails are sensed by all of the nearby organisms, signaling the presence of a large predator. Detection of the sharks hydrodynamic signals allows the smaller organisms to seek shelter and avoid predation. The hydrodynamic wake extending behind the shark is visualized in this dance by the trailing movement ...

Cancuns Underwater Museum with Marine Life
Here's a new video with terrific underwater and behind-the-scenes footage that shows how the work has truly become a sprawling reef system teeming with marine life. The project was ambitious from the beginning; it involved more than 400 life-like concrete statues, meticulously carved to resemble a cross section of human society, and strategically placed across 420 acres of ocean floor. en.nauticwebnews.com

Coral Reefs: good for marine life, good for us
Coral reefs are home to a quarter of the world's marine life. But reefs aren't just good for fish. 450 million people need them for food, jobs and protection of the sea. But climate change, pollution and over-fishing are trashing reefs everywhere. A quarter of the world's coral reefs are damaged beyond repair. WWF is working to save these extraordinary underwater worlds. Read more: wwf.panda.org
