Roaring 20s: Gus C. Edwards Orch. - Alabama Stomp, 1926
Gus C. Edwards & His Orchestra (A Benson Organisation) Vocal Refrain by Cliff Covert -- Alabama Stomp, Fox Trot (Henry Creamer -- Jimmy Johnson) Victor 1926 (USA) NOTE: Gus C. EDWARDS (born Gustaw Simon, 1879 in Inowrocław, Poland -- d. 1945 in NYC) American songwriter and vaudevillian, owner of theatre companies and music publisher. When he was seven, his family moved to the United States, ending up in Brooklyn. During the day, he worked in the family cigar store, and in the evenings, he wandered looking for any sort of show business job. He found work as a singer at various lodge halls, on ferry boat lounges and in the saloons until he was employed at Bowery Theatre. His duty, however, was not singing but standing in the audience, and pretending to be completely overcome by the numbers, which were presented on the stage. In age of 17, Gus Edwards made his first stage appearing at Johnny Palmer's Gaiety Saloon in Brooklyn, after which he was contracted with four other boys to tour as The Newsboys Quintett. It's when he wrote his first song, to a lyric by Tom Daly, "All I Want is My Black Baby Back". May Irwin sang the song in her act, and helped to popularize it. Soon, with the lyricist Will Cobb, Gus Edwards formed a parthership, that lasted for many years. He also performed as vaudeville singer, and later, he founded his own vaudeville company. He discovered Elsie Janis, Eddie Cantor, the Marx Brothers, Eleanor Powell, Hildegarde, the Lane Sisters and Ina Ray Hutton ...

Gus Edwards - In My Merry Oldsmobile 1905
"In My Merry Oldsmobile" is a popular song from 1905, with music by Gus Edwards and lyrics by Vincent P. Bryan. The song's chorus is one of the most enduring automobile-oriented songs. The verses, which are slightly suggestive (by 1905 standards) and contain quaint terms for lovemaking, are seldom heard today. Gus Edwards (18 August 1879 -- 7 November 1945) was an American songwriter and vaudevillian. He also organised his own theatre companies and was a music publisher. Edwards was born Gus Simon in Hohensalza (Inowrocław), German Empire. When he was seven, his family moved to the United States, ending up in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. During the day, he worked in the family cigar store, and in the evenings, he wandered looking for any sort of show business job. He found work as a singer at various lodge halls, on ferry boat lounges, in saloons, and even between bouts at the athletic clubs. There is a story that in the early 1890s Edwards met up with famed prizefighter John L. Sullivan, by then working in vaudeville, who was so impressed with the youngster that he decided to employ him in his act. As a very young boy, Edwards worked as a song plugger at Koster and Bial's, at Tony Pastor's theatre, and at the Bowery Theatre. In those old vaudeville days, song publishers would often hire a very young boy to sit in the theatre, and immediately after a vaudeville star had sung one of the publisher's songs, the youngster would stand up in the audience, and ...

Regina Spektor- Don't Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas) Live at Tower Theatre May 12, 2012
Lyrics: Down in Bowery They lose their ballads and their lipped-mouths in the night And stumbling through the street they say: "Sir, do you got a light? And if you do, then you're my friend And if you don't, then you're my foe And if you are a deity of any sort Then please don't go!" Ne me quitte pas, mon chere Down on Lexington they walk In new shoes stuck to aging feet And close their eyes and open And not recognize the aging street And think about how things were right When they were young and veins were tight And if you are the ghost of Christmas past Then won't you stay the night? Ne me quitte pas, mon chere Down in Bronxy Bronx The kids go sledding down snow-covered slopes And frozen noses, frozen toes The frozen city starts to glow And yes, they know that it will pass And, yes, they know New York will thaw But if you are a friend of any sort Then play along and catch a cold Ne me quitte pas, mon chere I love Paris in the rain... Down in Paris they walk fast That is, unless they're walking slow And in cafes they look away That is, unless they look right in And in the gardens I get lost That is, unless I'm getting found And if you are the ghost of New York city Won't you stick around? Ne me quitte pas, mon chere I love Paris in the rain... Ne me quitte pas!
