Wawa River

On Sept. 25 to 26, 2009, typhoon Ondoy hit the Philippines. Continuous rains have caused flood waters from the hills towards highly populated areas in Rizal and Metro Manila. About noon of Saturday, the flood has risen to dangerous levels and residents from different areas such as Marikina City have been trapped at their houses. To date, typhoon Ondoy death toll reaches to 246. Affected population has reached to a minimum of 2.2 million and about 736000 are evacuees, while 42 are reported still missing. Destruction to agriculture amounts to P3.2 billion. In Rizal, 87 were killed and 20 were reported missing. The typhoon affected about 629000 individuals from Rizal province. In Sitio Wawa of Bgy. San Rafael, Montalban town, members of Parawagan Upland Farmers Association or PUFAI and Alyansa ng Mamamayan sa Sapa or ALMASA have been affected by Ondoys onslaught. 68 houses or about 300 individuals were affected by flood, 4 were totally swept away, while scores have been damaged. Those flooded lost their belongings, their clothes, kitchenwares, bedsheets and few appliances. They were totally dispossessed by the typhoon. Also, their crops such as upland rice, bananas, rootcrops and vegetables were destroyed. They were left with no source of food and clothing, thus, they only rely on petty relief arriving at their area. Also, the rough road at the front of their area was damaged, endangered of erosion.
