A Special Area of Conservation (SAC) is defined in the European Union's Habitats Directive (92/43/EEC), also known as the Directive on the Conservation of Natural Habitats and of Wild Fauna and Flora. They are to protect the 220 habitats and approximately 1000 species listed in annex I and II of the directive which are considered to be of European interest following criteria given in the directive. They must be chosen from the Sites of Community Importance by the State Members and designated SAC by an act assuring the conservation measures of the natural habitat.
SACs complement Special Protection Areas and together form a network of protected sites across the European Union called Natura 2000. This, in turn, is part of the Emerald network of Areas of Special Conservation Interest (ASCIs) under the Berne Convention.
Prior to being designated as a Special Area of Conservation (SAC), all sites are assessed under a process set out by the Joint Nature Conservation Committee as follows:

Loch Creran is a sea loch in Argyll, on the west coast of Scotland. It is about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) long from its head at Invercreran to its mouth on the Lynn of Lorne, part of Loch Linnhe. The loch separates the areas of Benderloch to the south and Appin to the north. The island of Eriska lies at the mouth of the loch. The loch is bridged at its narrowest point at Creagan, by the A828 road. The village of Barcaldine lies on the south shore of the loch.

The River Shannon (Irish: Abha na Sionainne / an tSionainn / an tSionna) is the longest river in Ireland at 360.5 km (224 miles). It drains the Shannon River Basin which has an area of 16,865 km2 (6,512 ml2), one fifth of the area of Ireland.
The Shannon divides the west of Ireland (principally the province of Connacht) from the east and south (Leinster and most of Munster). County Clare, being west of the Shannon but part of the province of Munster, is the major exception. The river represents a major physical barrier between east and west, with fewer than thirty crossing-points between Limerick city in the south and the village of Dowra in the north.
The river is named after Sionna, a Celtic goddess.
The Shannon has been an important waterway since antiquity, having first been mapped by the Graeco-Egyptian geographer Ptolemy. The river flows generally southwards from the Shannon Pot in County Cavan before turning west and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean through the 102.1 km (63.4 mi) long Shannon Estuary. Limerick city stands at the point where the river water meets the sea water of the estuary. The Shannon is tidal east of Limerick as far as the base of the Ardnacrusha dam.
The River Nore (Irish: An Fheoir) is a 140-kilometre (87 mi) long river located in south-east of Ireland. Along with the River Suir and River Barrow, it is one of the constituent rivers of the group known as the Three Sisters. The river drains approximately 977 square miles (2,530 km2) of Leinster. The long term average flow rate of the River Nore is 42.9 cubic metres per second (m3/s) The river rises in the Devil's Bit Mountain, County Tipperary. Flowing generally southeast, and then south, before emptying into the Celtic Sea at Waterford Harbour, Waterford.
Parts of the river are listed as Special Areas of Conservation.
The river is known in Irish as An Fheoir [ənˠ oːɾʲ], possibly referring to féar, "grass." In 1732 John Loveday spelled it Neor and Neure.
The Nore rises on the eastern slopes of the Devil's Bit Mountain in the townland of Borrisnoe, County Tipperary. It then flows south-eastwards to County Laois and County Kilkenny before joining the River Barrow just north of New Ross near the Barrow Bridge. The river passes near Durrow, County Laois then through Ballyragget, the city of Kilkenny and then the villages of Bennettsbridge and Thomastown. It flows through the Mount Juliet estate. Further south, it forms a picturesque V-shaped river valley, particularly notable near the village of Inistioge, the tidal limit. Major tributaries of the Nore include the Dinin, the Breagagh at Kilkenny City, the King's River, the Little Arrigle and the Black Water.

Fal and Helford Special Area of Conservation (SAC) and Falmouth Bay to St Austell Bay potential Special Protection Area (pSPA). The south coast of Cornwall’s a popular destination for holidays, with beautiful countryside and beaches. But it also has some amazing marine wildlife. Between the towns of Helston and St Austell there are two large marine protected areas. Rare seabirds depend on the bays and estuaries for food during the winter, and a huge variety of marine species live beneath the waves.
On the 19th of July, the latest Shell sinkhole appeared in Sruwaddacon estuary above Shell's tunnel. Sruwaddacon estuary is a special area of conservation and special protection area, and this video shows spoil spewing out onto the sea bed. This video proves that Pat Rabbitte's statement in the Dáil that the holes can be around 50cm deep is false. This shows a picture of stick 1m long being placed in the hole (and no bottom could be felt). http://www.shelltosea.com/content/video-rabbitte-admits-d%C3%A1il-speech-sinkholes-sending-him-sleep Previous sinkhole video can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4hvz2l27Ooc

Ballycroy National Park Ballycroy National Park was established in November 1998, it is Ireland’s sixth National Park and is located on the Western seaboard in northwest Mayo. It comprises of 11,000 hectares of Atlantic blanket bog and mountainous terrain, covering a vast uninhabited and unspoilt wilderness dominated by the Nephin Beg mountain range. Between Nephin beg and Slieve Carr, at 721metres above sea level, the highest mountain in the range, lie the Scardaun Loughs. To the west of the mountains is the Owenduff bog. This is one of the last intact active blanket bog systems in Ireland and Western Europe and is an important scientific and scenic feature of the National Park. The Park also protects a variety of other important habitats and species. These include alpine heath, upland ...

In 2007 the application of the CetaceosMadeira II Project (LIFE07 NAT/P/000646, 2009-2013) was designed and prepared for the purpose of carrying on the work for the study and conservation of cetaceans in the Archipelago of Madeira, which began with the CetaceosMadeira Project (LIFE99 NAT/P/006432), which ran from 2000 to 2004. That project raised some questions related to the conservation of cetaceans in the archipelago that needed to be addressed at a later time, and these were incorporated in the goals of the CetaceosMadeira II Project. These include the following: - The confirmation of the scientific data gathered during the CetaceosMadeira Project that point to the existence of areas/habitats preferred by the bottlenose dolphin in the coastal waters of the Archipelago of Madeira, and ...
