Maltese Premier League 2010 - 2011 - Sliema 1 - Birkirkara 4
SLIEMA WANDERERS-1 BIRKIRKARA-4 Reigning champions Birkirkara showed character as they recovered from an early goal and the loss of goalkeeper Ezequiel Lovizon to injury to trounce Sliema Wanderers 4-1 in an action-packed match at the National Stadium. Birkirkara's resources for this match were severely depleted by the suspension of no fewer than five players, namely Shaun Bajada, Paul Fenech, Nikola Vukanac, Patrick Borg and Karl Pulo. Midfielder Alan Tabone is sidelined with a fractured arm. Paul Zammit, the Birkirkara coach, gave a debut to Scottish defender Ryan Harding, Maltese-Australian midfielder Simon Zahra and Malta U-21 forward Terence Vella. Sliema Wanderers had six foreign players in their squad with Brazilian striker Jackson Lima, their latest signing, awarded a starting role along with Hungarian goalkeeper Viktor Szentpeteri, Ivory Coast defender Sekou Tidiane Souare and Nigerian forward Obinna Obiefule. The Blues went close early on when Clayton Failla hit a strong shot that Birkirkara goalkeeper Ezequiel Lovizon pushed away for a corner. From the ensuing corner, Failla's cross was met by Josef Mifsud whose header was cleared off the line by Trevor Cilia. Birkirkara's troubles increased on seven minutes when Lovizon was stretchered off after suffering a hand injury. Manuel Bartolo replaced the Brazilian-born goalkeeper. Four minutes after his introduction, Bartolo was beaten by Lima's diagonal scorcher after the Brazilian had received from Obiefule. Sliema ...

MALTA: Birkirkara - Feast of St Helena 2009
FEAST OF ST HELENA, BIRKIRKARA, MALTA Birkirkara is one of the oldest towns/villages in Malta. It was already a parish in 1436 and someone found out that it was established as a parish in 1402. Work on the present Church began in 1727. Thus far the identity of its architect is still a matter of debate among architectural historians. It's majestic facade, is one of the most beautiful we have in Malta. St Helena was the mother of Emperor Constantine the Great and she is credited with finding the True Cross of Christ. She died in the year 330 AD. The statue of St Helena was carved in wood by Salvu Psaila and was donated to the church by the local patriot Vincenzo Borg, who rose to fame by his leadership during the two-year blockade of the French after the 1798 insurrection. The statue is solemnly carried in procession twice a year: on the third of May in commemoration of the finding of the True Cross by the Empress Saint Helena and on her feast-day, one Sunday after the liturgical feast of 18th of August. This is the only procession in Malta that is held on a morning. The large bell found in the left hand side belfry tower is Malta's largest church bell and the third largest in the world. The parish has two band clubs: Banda Duke of Connaught's Own which was established in 1865 and Għaqda Mużikali Sant'Elena, established in 1919. The background music features segments of the two hymns in honor of St Helena and are played by the two band clubs. The one used by The Duke of ...

My Choice - Birkirkara: Heart of a Woman, Gold & Silver
1. Heart of a Woman - Frauenherz, Op.166a Polka/Mazurka composed in 1864 by the Austrian composer, Josef Strauss. 2. Gold and Silver Waltz played by André Rieu and his Johann Strauss Orchestra. -- Josef Strauss (1827--1870) was an Austrian composer. He was born in Vienna, the son of Johann Strauss I. He received training as an engineer, and worked for the city of Vienna as an engineer and designer. Strauss had talents as an artist, painter, poet, dramatist, singer, composer and inventor. He joined the family orchestra, along with his brothers, Johann Strauss II and Eduard Strauss in the 1850s. His first published work was called "Die Ersten und Letzten" (The First and the Last). He was known as 'Pepi' by his family and close friends, and Johann once said of him: "Pepi is the more gifted of us two; I am merely the more popular..." -- Franz Lehár was born in the northern part of Komárom, Kingdom of Hungary, Austria-Hungary (now Komárno, Slovakia), the eldest son of a bandmaster in the Infantry Regiment No. 50 of the Austro-Hungarian Army. He is most famous for his operettas -- the most successful of which is The Merry Widow (Die lustige Witwe) -- but he also wrote sonatas, symphonic poems, marches, and a number of waltzes (the most popular being Gold und Silber, composed for Princess Pauline von Metternich's "Gold and Silver" Ball, January 1902), some of which were drawn from his famous operettas. -- We take a quick tour of Birkirkara, Malta, a town of 25900 inhabitants in ...
