Dzungaria, also called Zungaria, is a geographical region in northwest China corresponding to the northern half of Xinjiang. It covers approximately 777,000 km2 (300,000 sq mi), lying mostly within Xinjiang, and extending into western Mongolia and eastern Kazakhstan. Formerly the term could cover a wider area, depending on temporary political boundaries.
The name Dzungaria is a corruption of the Mongolian term "Züün Gar" or "Jüün Gar" depending on the dialect of Mongolian used. "Züün"/"Jüün" means "left" and "Gar" means "hand". The name originates from the notion that the Western Mongols are on the left hand side when the Mongol Empire began its division into East and West Mongols. After this fragmentation, the western Mongolian nation was called "Zuun Gar". Today, the cradle of this former nation retains its name: Zungaria.
The core of Dzungaria is the triangular Dzungarian Basin (also Junggar Basin) with its central Gurbantunggut Desert. It is bounded by the Tien Shan to the south, the Altai Mountains to the northeast and the Tarbagatai Mountains to the northwest. The three corners are relatively open. The northern corner is the valley of the upper Irtysh River. The western corner is the Dzungarian Gate with its railroad (opened in 1990). The eastern corner leads to Gansu and the rest of China. In the south an easy pass leads from Ürümqi to the Turfan Depression. In the southwest the Borohoro Mountains branch of the Tian Shan separates the basin from the upper Ili River.

While in Dino Autopsy we get under the skin of a dinosaur with exclusive access to the excavation of one of the most intact dinosaur mummies ever found.
In Dino Death Trap, an extraordinary dinosaur find follows a team of palaeontologists in western China as they unearth a virtual black hole in dinosaur evolution. Led by Dr James Clark of George Washington University and Dr Xu Xing of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the team uncovers hundreds of exceptionally preserved dinosaur fossils, including new species that were astonishingly found stacked on top of one another in pits of death in the dry and desolate Junggar Basin. Preserved for 160 million years, a total of 400 specimens and around 40 different species, including bizarre ancestors of the T-Rex and the triceratops and an ancient crocodilian, were discovered in the pits. The scientists believe they may even have found the elusive ‘missing link’ in the middle Jurassic, when dinosaur evolution went wild. Watch in awe as the amazing creatures are digitally brought back to life and we probe the mystery of how these dinosaurs lived and died.

The Hephthalites (or Ephthalites), also known as the White Huns and known in Sanskrit as the Sveta Huna, were a nomadic confederation in Central Asia in Late Antiquity. At the height of its power in the first half of the 6th century, the Hephthalite Empire controlled territory in present-day Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India and China.
The stronghold of the Hephthalites was Tokharistan on the northern slopes of the Hindu Kush, in what is present-day northeastern Afghanistan. By 479, the Hephthalites had conquered Sogdia and driven the Kidarites westwards, and by 493 they had captured parts of present-day Dzungaria and the Tarim Basin in what is now Northwest China.
The Hephthalites invaded India for the first time in the 5th century and were defeated by Emperor Skandagupta of the Gupta Empire. By the end of the 5th century, the Hephthalites overran the part of the Gupta Empire that was to their southeast and conquered Central and North India. Emperor Bhanugupta of the Guptas defeated the Huns under Toramana in 510 CE. Later the Hephthalites were defeated and driven out of India by the Indian kings Yasodharman and Narasimhagupta in the early 6th century.
Christopher I. Beckwith, referring to Étienne de la Vaissière, says the Hephthalites should not be called White Huns. According to de la Vaissiere, the name of the Hephthalites was not mentioned alongside that of the White Huns.
In Chinese chronicles, the Hephthalites are called Yanda or Yediyiliduo, while older Chinese sources of c. 125 AD call them Hua or Hudun and describe them as a tribe living beyond the Great Wall in Dzungaria. Elsewhere they were called the Xionites or "White Huns", known to the Greeks as Ephthalite, Abdel or Avdel, to the Indians as Sveta Huna ("White Huns"), or Turushka, to the Armenians as Haital, and to the Persians and Arabs as Haytal or Hayatila, while their Bactrian name is ηβοδαλο (Ebodalo).
According to most specialist scholars, the spoken language of the Hephthalites was an Eastern Iranian language, but different from the Bactrian language written in the Greek alphabet that was used as their "official language" and minted on coins, as was done under the preceding Kushan Empire.
Etymology
Although the Hephthalite Empire was known in China as Yàdā (嚈噠), Chinese chroniclers recognized this designated the leaders of the empire. The same sources document that the main tribe called themselves huá (滑). The modern Chinese variation Yanda has been given various Latinised renderings such as "Yeda", although the corresponding Cantonese and Korean pronunciations Yipdaat and Yeoptal (Korean: 엽달) are more compatible with the Greek Hephthalite.
According to B.A. Litvinsky, the names of the Hephthalite rulers used in the Shahnameh are Iranian. According to Xavier Tremblay, one of the Hephthalite rulers was named "Khingila", which has the same root as the Sogdian word xnγr and the Wakhi word xiŋgār, meaning "sword". The name Mihirakula is thought to be derived from mithra-kula which is Iranian for "the Sun family", with kula having the same root as Pashto kul, "family". Toramāna, Mihirakula's father, is also considered to have an Iranian origin. In Sanskrit, mihira-kula would mean the kul "family" of mihira "Sun", although mihira is not purely Sanskrit but is a borrowing from Middle Iranian mihr. Janos Harmatta gives the translation "Mithra's Begotten" and also supports the Iranian theory

They use barley and a special kind of millet as horse food."Proto-Great-Steppe continued to occupy the Kulunda Steppe for a long time and would finally develop into Proto-Kyrgyz-Kazakh-Chagatai in the Tian Shan and Proto-Kimak nomads along the Irtysh, and Proto-Baraba near Lake Chany.
It is not really clear when exactly the arrival of Proto-Kyrgyz-Kazakh-Chagatai in the Tian Shan Mountains first occurred — the scanty historical records and considerations by different authors differ significantly on that date. On the other hand, the principle of omnidirectional migration and the archaicness of the modern Kyrgyz language suggest that the earliest Proto-Kyrgyz settlement along the Jeti-Su (Zheti-Su) (the "Seven Waters" area between Lake Balkhash and the Tian Shan) must have been a quite early event, presumably even consistent with the separation of Proto-Central into between Proto-Altay-Sayan and Proto-Great-Steppe circa 200 BCE. This is supported by the fact that Kyrgyz and Altay Turkic presently retain many Proto-Turkic and Proto-Central archaisms and for this reason [as well as because of the secondary migrations during the Dzungarian invasion of the 17th century] were even viewed as related in other classifications. However, from the current perspective, both Kyrgyz and Altay Turkic rather seem to be a sort of refugium areas of an ancient Proto-Central continuum superseded by other tribes in other regions, and their purported relatedness mostly reflects archaic retentions. The position of Proto-Baraba is basically unclear. It has been noted by many researchers that Baraba bears many similarities to Kimak-Kypchak-Tatar, Kyrgyz-Kazakh and even Khakas-Altay. The most likely hypothesis would therefore be that Baraba is a remnant of the early Proto-Central or Proto-Great-Steppe continuum in the interfluvial area between the Ob and Irtysh basins, that was later intermingled with Proto-Kimak-Kypchak-Tatar that moved along the Irtysh after 700 CE.Curiously, one of the lakes in the Depression is named Lake Kyrgyz (Hargas-Nuur or Khirgis-Nur) implying that it was once inhabited by the arrivals from Tuva and Khakassia, usually known as Kyrgyz after about 500 CE.
The Yenisei Kyrgyz tibes used incinerations thus destroying any buried material artifacts, which is also corroborated by the reports from the Tang Chinese Chronicles (Tang Shu Hezhao) saying that the Kyrgyz tribes burned up their dead and then reburied them under kurgans [Grach, A.D. (1980) (in Russian)According to Radloff, "the Kyrgyz people have used agriculture even more extensively than the Kazakhs.

In Dino Death Trap head deep into China's Junggar Basin where palaeontologists have uncovered the remains of dinosaurs previously unknown to science in a discovery which could reveal the secrets of dinosaur evolution.

The Rise And Fall Of The Hephthalite Empire
The Rise And Fall Of The Hephthalite Empire
