In retaliation his Renamo former rebel group launched an assault on police station in Maringue. Reports suggest police abandoned their positions after coming under heavy gunfire. Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama is at large deep in the jungle: Tomás Vieira Mário is a political analyst: "It is believed that Dhlakama abandoned his base, in a hurry with no time to issue orders or give clear instructions to his men, wherever they are. The retaliation may have come about without an order from the top." The US government has called on both sides to take steps to refrain from further hostilities. Mozambique was gripped by a brutal civil war following its independence from Portugal in 1975. The strife between the now ruling Frelimo party and Renamo left around 1 million people dead. In 1992 the parties agreed a peace deal in Rome and since then the country has shown signs of stability and growth. Mozambique Peace Deal Ended After Raids
Mozambique Peace Deal Ended After Raids
Mozambique's opposition Renamo movement has ended a 1992 peace accord after government forces attacked the jungle base of its leader, Afonso Dhlakama. The government forces captured the Sathunjira base in central Mozambique, forcing Mr Dhlakama to flee. About a million people were killed in the civil war that raged in Mozambique after it achieved independence from Portugal in 1975. Mozambique's economy has been booming since the civil war ended. Renamo spokesman Fernando Mazanga said that government soldiers had bombarded the Sathunjira base with heavy weapons before occupying it on Monday. "Peace is over in the country... The responsibility lies with the Frelimo government because they didn't want to listen to Renamo's grievances," Mr Mazanga told Reuters news agency. This irresponsible attitude of the commander-in-chief of the defence and security forces puts an end to the Rome peace deal" Renamo statement The attack was aimed at assassinating Mr Dhlakama but he had managed to escape to an undisclosed location, Mr Mazanga said. In a statement, Renamo blamed President Armando Guebuza for the attack. "This irresponsible attitude of the commander-in-chief of the defence and security forces puts an end to the Rome peace deal," it said. The BBC's Jose Tembe in the capital, Maputo, says Renamo's statement suggests that it plans to go back to war, but it has denied this in the past. Defence ministry spokesman Cristovao Chume said government forces had taken control of the base in response to an earlier attack on an army post by Renamo fighters. He confirmed that Mr Dhlakama had fled. Mr Chume and Mr Mazanga did not give any casualty figures. Force of hundreds Mozambique's Frelimo government has repeatedly accused Renamo of dragging the country back to war, an allegation it denies. In April, at least five people were killed in central Mozambique after Renamo members attacked a police post. A force of about 300 Renamo men has remained armed since the peace accord, despite efforts to integrate them into the army or police force. Mr Dhlakama has said he needs his own personal bodyguards, and the men usually stay in his bush camp in the Gorongosa mountains. After the civil war ended, Mr Dhlakama moved out of the camp to live in Maputo and later in the northern Nampula province But he returned to the mountains last year, saying he needed to be close to his men who were feeling ignored. Mozambique is due to hold local elections in November, and presidential and parliamentary elections next year. Mr Guebuza's Frelimo party has governed Mozambique since independence in 1975. Renamo, which was formed around the same time, was backed by white rulers who were then in power in neighbouring South Africa and what is now Zimbabwe.- published: 21 Oct 2013

Realtree Global Hunting: Anti-Poaching in Mozambique
In this very special episode of Realtree Global Hunting, Ian Harford is in Mozambique, out in the African bush. It's no walk in the park out here, whilst being breathtakingly beautiful, the wilderness of Mozambique hides numerous dangers around every corner. Mozambique is a relatively young country, gaining independence in 1975, only to be plunged into a bloody 15 year civil war two years later. Today, Mozambique's GDP is growing, however, food shortages are endemic, and where there is little food, poaching is critically high. Many species have suffered terribly over recent years due to out of control poaching. But recent laws and management practices have been put into place to help combat this. Ian visits Mahimba Game Reserve, who demonstrate that controlled, commercial hunting, and hunting conservation is beneficial to the local people, the economy and helps combat illegal poaching. Enjoy! Police Station Attacked In Mozambique
Mozambique's opposition Renamo movement has attacked a police station in the central town of Maringue a day after annulling a 1992 peace accord with the government, officials say. Police are said to have fled their posts after gunmen opened fire and there are no reports of casualties. A Renamo spokesman said party leader Afonso Dhlakama had "lost control of the situation". On Monday, the army captured Mr Dhlakama's base, forcing him to flee. About a million people were killed in Mozambique's civil war. The conflict ended in 1992 when Renamo and the Frelimo government signed a peace accord. 'Horrible situation' After the seizure of Mr Dhlakama's Sathunjira base on Monday, Renamo said it had pulled out of the peace deal. However, its 51 MPs have not withdrawn from parliament. For one hour shooting could be heard from all directions and people fled from their homes" Romao Martins Local teacher The clashes have raised fears among many Mozambicans that the civil war could resume, threatening stability and the economic boom the southern Africa state is currently experiencing, reports the BBC's Jose Tembe from the capital, Maputo. However, some people trust the army, he adds. Mozambique's President Armando Guebuza addressed rallies in central Mozambique on Tuesday, urging people to remain calm. State-run Radio Mozambique quoted a police source as saying that Renamo fighters attacked the police station in Maringue, about 35km (20 miles) from Mr Dhlakama's former base in central Sofala province. The attack was intense, but there were no casualties, Radio Mozambique reported. A teacher in Meringue, Romao Martins, told AFP news agency that residents had fled their homes during the assault. Schools have also shut amid fears that the violence could escalate, AFP reports. "The situation is horrible here. Early this morning, armed men supposed to be Renamo, attacked and it was a mess," Mr Martins is quoted as saying. "For one hour, shooting could be heard from all directions and people fled from their homes." Map On Monday, defence ministry spokesman Cristovao Chume said government forces had taken control of Mr Dhlakama's base in response to an earlier attack on an army post by Renamo fighters. "Peace is over in the country... The responsibility lies with the Frelimo government because they didn't want to listen to Renamo's grievances," Mr Mazanga told Reuters news agency. Our correspondent says it is unclear whether Renamo intends to withdraw its members from parliament. A Renamo MP told him that no official position had as yet been taken, he adds. Dhlakama's Renamo party said the military action "puts an end" to the 1992 peace agreement that ended years of civil war. Reports suggest that Dhlakama escaped before the troops moved in. Renamo spokesperson Fernando Manzanga made a statement to the media: "They have taken the house of Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama. The party leader hasn't ordered Renamo forces to respond, he has ordered the evacuation of the population that was there for protection." It is thought the Mozambique military moved after a suspected Renamo militia killed seven government troops last week. The peace accord between the ruling Frelimo party and Renamo was signed in Rome in 1992 and brought an end to a civil war that had raged since the country's independence from Portugal in 1975. Close to a million people were killed during the violence. Rebels In Mozambique Denied being involved In Attack
Rebels In Mozambique Denied being involved In Attack
Mozambique's former rebel group Renamo has denied responsibility for the armed attack on the country's main highway which killed one and injured ten amid tensions with the government. Renamo, which announced last week that it was no longer party to the peace deal it entered with the Frelimo government following a raid on its leader's base, said it had investigated and established it was not responsible. "Renamo distances itself from the attack in Muxungue," said Fernando Mazanga, the group's spokesman. "We carried out our investigations and came to the conclusion that it was not carried out by Renamo," Mazanga told the AFP news agency. The president's office had blamed Renamo for the attack on three civilian vehicles in central Sofala province early on Saturday morning. Armed men attacked the main north-south highway near the coastal city Beira, a stretch of road where Renamo fighters have been targeting civilian vehicles over the past six months. The assault came a day after Renamo announced its leader's right-hand man and member of parliament Armindo Milaco had been killed when the group's main headquarters fell to government forces on Monday. Civilians targeted Renamo takes its name from a Portuguese acronym as does Frelimo, which has been in power since independence from Portugal The movement was founded in 1975 following independence, and waged a military campaign against Frelimo, then a Marxist-Leninist party. The conflict ended with a peace agreement in 1992. But the peace accord unravelled last week, with Renamo vowing to attack government installations and civilians after its headquarters were attacked by government troops. Saturday's attack was the second this week after Renamo declared that the 1992 peace deal was over. "Armed men came out of the woods, opened fire and hit the driver in the forehead or the face," said Felisberta Moutinho, a survivor of the attack. A source at the Muxungue rural hospital confirmed one dead and at least nine wounded. Moutinho said 10 were wounded. She attributed the assault to Renamo, but a Renamo spokesmen declined to comment. A group of cars had been travelling northbound from the Machanga district towards the coastal city Beira when the gunmen attacked three vehicles. "They kept shooting at the passengers. We left the bus and fled. Some fled through the windows, others were hit by bullets," Moutinho told the AFP news agency. She said she ran into the woods with her two children until she found a group of police vehicles. "A while later we heard explosions," she said. "They stole all our things and then set fire to the bus." Four people were seriously wounded and six others had light injuries, she said.- published: 27 Oct 2013
