Hema Sardesai also known as simply Hema, is an Indian playback singer, best known for her Hindi songs.

During her career, Sardesai has sung playback songs for over 60 Bollywood films, has released several successful Indipop albums, and has performed numerous live stage shows in almost all the states of India and world tours in different countries around the globe.

Sardesai is the only Indian Singer to win the ''Grand Prix'' at the 16th International Pop Song Festival in Germany, and the only female singer other than Lata Mangeshkar to perform at the celebrations for the 50th year of India's Independence day.

Career

Born in Mumbai, India, Hema Sardesai hails from Goa.

She began singing from a very young age and made her stage debut as an eight-year-old at the Navratri Festival. As a child, teachers and friends used to call her ''Happy Go Lucky Girl'' and even today she is frequently called so by her colleagues in the Indian music industry.

She started her playback singing career in 1989 and made her debut in the film ''Goonj'', singing for actress Juhi Chawla. Since then she has sung songs for over 60 Hindi films for many popular actresses like Manisha Koirala, Urmila Matondkar, Karisma Kapoor, Raveena Tandon, Tabbu, Kajol, Preity Zinta, Sushmita Sen and Kareena Kapoor, collaborating with some of India's most prominent music directors and composers, including Anu Malik, A R Rahman, Rajesh Roshan, Nadeem-Shravan, Vishal Bhardwaj and Pritam.

Her first milestone achievement was her winning the Grand Prix at the 16th International Pop Song Festival '89 held in Germany. This gave her an opportunity to express her stage talent and, since then, she has successfully performed on TV and live stage shows in almost all the states of India and numerous world tours to places such as the USA, UK, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Holland, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, West Indies, Thailand, Nepal, Indonesia and so on.

On 15 August 1997 Hema performed at the celebrations for the 50th year of India's Independence. She sang one of her own compositions, "Mere Vatan Hindustan" at Vijay Chowk in New Delhi witnessed by an audience of nearly 3 million people. The song was specially composed for the occasion.

Her 1999 album ''Piya Se Milke Aaye Nain'' won Hema an award for "The best selling album of the season".

During her years in the Indian film industry, Sardesai was widely praised for her song performances. Her performances for songs such as ''Awaara Bhavaren'' (''Sapnay'', 1997), ''Sona Sona Ye Na Hona'' (''Soldier'', 1998), ''Sar Sar Hawa Hai'' (''Daman'', 2001), ''Kitne Kisse Hain'' (''Astitva'', 2001), ''Hai Re Hai Re'' (''Khushi'', 2003), ''Sun Suniyo'' (''Musafir'', 2004), the title track of the film ''Asambhav'' (2005) among many other, were much appreciated and applauded by critics and audiences.

Hema is the only singer who sang playback duets with four superstars: Amitabh Bachchan (''Baghban''), Naseeruddin Shah (''Asambhav''), Govinda (''Hum Do Hamara Do'') and Shahrukh Khan (''Josh'').

Richa Pallod is an Indian model and film actress who has featured in regional Indian films. After appearing as a child artiste, she appeared in an award-winning role in ''Nuvve Kavali'', her first film in Telugu. She has appeared in several low-budget Hindi films with her most notable appearance being in Yashraj Films' ''Neal 'N' Nikki''. Her roles in Tamil films ''Shahjahan'', ''Alli Arjuna'' and ''Unakkum Enakkum'' are noted whilst she has also featured in Kannada and Malayalam language films. She belongs to Marwari Maheshwari family.

Career

Richa Pallod, made her entry into films with a minute role as a child artiste in the film ''Lamhe'' (1991) and then ''Pardes'' (1997).. She started modeling at the age of 16, has featured in over five hundred commercials and appeared in Falguni Pathak’s music videos "Yaad Piya Ki Aane Lagi" and "Piya Se Mil Ke Aaye Nain". Richa made her film debut in the Telugu film, ''Nuvve Kavali'' (2000), opposite Tarun, whom she had previously appeared with in a commercial shot by Rajiv Menon. The film, which portrayed love between two childhood friends in college, became a large commercial success and won favourable reviews with claims that Richa "did no seem like a debutant" in her role. Furthermore the role led to Richa securing the Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award for 2000.

She made her debut in Tamil cinema, playing the lead role opposite Vijay in ''Shajahan'', although the film was panned by critics and Richa's performance was noted to have "done little but look good". Her second Tamil film was ''Alli Arjuna'', an A. R. Rahman musical, directed by noted film maker Saran featuring Manoj Bharathiraja. Richa played the role of an independent girl being romantically pursued by Manoj, but once again received little acclaim with reviewers citing that "you do not feel for Richa".

Her first film as a senior artiste in Hindi films was opposite Fardeen Khan in ''Kuch Tum Kaho Kuch Hum Kahein'' with the film becoming a failure, with Richa claiming that the promotion of the project, let the film down. Her subsequent Hindi films within the next two years were low-budget projects and failed to take big openings, with the two films opposite actor Rakesh Bapat being large financial failures. Similarly her projects in Kannada ''Cheppale'' and ''Jootata'' opposite Sameer Dattani also failed commercially, with reviews criticizing Richa's performance in the latter film. Richa went on to appear in Yashraj Films' ''Neal 'N' Nikki'' featuring Uday Chopra and Tanisha, playing the role of Sweety. After several of her previous venture failed to succeed, Richa was losing offers for lead roles and was forced to appear in a supporting role in ''Unakkum Enakkum''.

Richa went on to claim that poor public relations and lack of promotion led to her disappearance from films before returning in 2009, with her first appearance in a Malayalam film in the Mammootty starrer, ''Daddy Cool''. Playing the role of Annie Simon, a mother of an eight year old, her role won critical acclaim and the film was a commercial success. In 2010 she appeared in the Telugu language film, ''Inkosaari'' alongside Raja and Manjari Phadnis. However the film failed to succeed commercially as it was released alongside the hit film, ''Ye Maaya Chesaave'', which went on to attract more viewers. Currently, Richa has two long-delayed Tamil films waiting, ''Nalvaravu'' and ''Kadhal Kalvan'', scheduled for release in 2011.

In the English language, black sheep is an idiom used to describe an odd or disreputable member of a group, especially within a family. The term has typically been given negative implications, implying waywardness. It derived from the atypical and unwanted presence of other black individuals in flocks of white sheep.

The idiom is also found in other languages, e.g., French, Serbian, Bulgarian, Hebrew, Portuguese, Bosnian, Greek, Turkish, Dutch, Afrikaans, Swedish, Danish, Spanish, Czech, Slovak, Romanian and Polish. The same concept is illustrated in some other languages by the phrase "white crow": for example ''belaya vorona'' (белая ворона) in Russian and ''kalag-e sefid'' (کلاغ سفید) in Persian.

Idiomatic usage

The term originated from the occasional black sheep which are born into a flock of white sheep due to a genetic process of recessive traits. Black wool was considered commercially undesirable because it could not be dyed. In 18th and 19th century England, the black color of the sheep was seen as the mark of the devil. In modern usage, the expression has lost some of its negative connotations, though the term is usually given to the member of a group who has certain characteristics or lack thereof deemed undesirable by that group.

A variant form, "the red sheep of the family", was used by Jessica Mitford to describe herself, a communist in a family of aristocratic fascists.

Biological origin

In sheep, a white fleece is not albinism but a dominant gene that actively switches color production off, thus obscuring any other color that may be present. As a result, a black fleece in most sheep is recessive, so if a white ram and a white ewe are each heterozygous for black, in about 25% of cases they will produce a black lamb. In fact in most white sheep breeds only a few white sheep are heterozygous for black, so black lambs are usually much rarer than this. Some breeds of sheep (such as the Hebridean, Ouessant and Black Welsh Mountain) are normally black.

Other uses

In psychology, the ''black sheep effect'' refers to the tendency of a group to treat or evaluate members of one's own group who behave in a way such as to jeopardize the group's image, more harshly than similarly unlikable members of another group, while considering the former group as a whole to be superior to, or better or more deserving than the latter.
