Films Division Of India: A Documentary on Nargis Dutt by Priya Dutt. The documentary starts with the scene of a hospital where the cancer-stricken queen of Indian silver-screen passed her last days. The following scene was her legendary character in 'Mother India' of Mehboob in which Sunil Dutt, her spouse, played as her son. Indian music maestro Naushad Ali paid glowing tributes to Nargis. Her brothers Anwar Hussain and Akhtar also discussed the life of Nargis whose original name was Fatima born on June 1, 1929. Her home was an abode of music and poetry. From Allahabad, her family shifted to Kolkata and then Mumbai at a seaside abode. Literature was her love in studies. Jiddan Bai, her mother, was a singer and encouraged her in her pursuits in performing arts. Baby Rani was her child star name in the talkies. Mohan Babu (Rasheed), her father, on his way to medical studies in England dropped to hear the song of Jiddan Bai became a permanent resident of the house by marrying her. Great director Mehboob gave her the name Nargis. She performed with Raj Kapoor as well as Dilip Kumar, with light role as well as tragedy, with the same talent and skill. Dilip saw no one with the same versatility adding that she worked without any feeling of burden in a delightful manner before camera. The film was nominated for Oscars. She was born in June 1, 1929 as Fatima Rashid. She was the daughter Allahabad-based singer, Jaddanbai and Uttamchand Mohanchand. Her brother, Anwar Hussain, also became a film actor. She made her screen debut as a child in Talash-E-Haq in 1935, but her acting career began in 1942 with Tamanna. She starred in many popular Hindi movies of the late 1940s and 1950s such as Barsaat (1949), Andaz (1949), Awaara (1951), Deedar (1951), Shree 420 (1955), and Chori Chori (1956). In most of her films she starred alongside Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar. In 1958, Nargis married her Mother India co-star, actor Sunil Dutt, and left the film industry. She made her last film appearance in the 1967 film Raat Aur Din. The couple married on 11 March 1958 and had three children together: Sanjay, Namrata, and Priya. Sanjay Dutt went on to become a very successful film actor. Namrata married actor Kumar Gaurav, son of veteran actor Rajendra Kumar who had appeared alongside both Nargis and Sunil Dutt in Mother India. Priya became a politician, and since 2005 has been a Member of Parliament. Nargis was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and underwent treatment for the disease. Mother India (Hindi: भारत माता, Urdu: بھارت ماتا) is a 1957 Bollywood film directed by Mehboob Khan and starring Nargis, Sunil Dutt, Rajendra Kumar and Raj Kumar. The film is a remake of Mehboob Khan's earlier film Aurat (1940). The film was fifth Indo-Russian co-production, and was preceded by Pardesi (1957), also starring Nargis Dutt. In 2005, Indiatimes Movies ranked the movie amongst the Top 25 Must See Bollywood Films. The film ranked #3 in the list of all-time box office hits. The film was India's first submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 1958, and was chosen as one of the five nominations for the category. The film came close to winning the award, but eventually lost to Frederico Fellini's Nights of Cabiria by a single vote. Plot; The film begins with the finishing of a water canal to the village set in the present. Radha (Nargis), as the 'mother' of the village is asked to open the canal and remembers back to her past when she was newly married, mirroring the new independence of India. The wedding between Radha and Shamu (Raaj Kumar) was paid for by Radha's mother-in-law who raised a loan from the moneylender, Sukhilala. This event starts the spiral of poverty and hardship which Radha endures. The conditions of the loan are disputed but the village elders decide in favour of the moneylender after which Shamu and Radha are forced to pay three quarters of their crop as interest on the loan of 500 rupees.
