"Juno" Marc Blitzstein "Finale" Shirley Booth Melvin Douglas Acetate Cut songs
Marc Blitzstein's remarkable 'Finale' for "Juno", from the acetate of his sixteen complete demos for the score. This includes the past tense reprise of "I Wish(ed) It So" and other cut material; the entire set includes several really good cut songs. Another case where if the book were properly revised - and several attempts have been made, most of which cut the score rather than restoring cut musical material - you'd have something very stage worthy. There were two very unfortunate circumstances on "Juno" in production. One was Tony Richardson leaving the direction before rehearsals started; the other Jerome Robbins had destroyed his personal and professional relationship with Blitzstein by outing 'Communist' friends to the congressional committee on "Unamerican Activities" to save his own career. Had Robbins directed "Juno", the problems in the book and staging would have been solved and it would be considered a classic instead of an obscure work Shirley Booth was in before she did "Hazel". The score, as revealed in both the OC recording and the Encores concert version with Victoria Clark, is stellar. "Bird Upon the Tree" stopped the show when I saw it at City Center the closing performance. Clark was really wonderful. Good place to start, she relished the role. Photos are from the rare souvenir booklet, it ran a handful of performances on Broadway. Booth is very moving in the OC recording of this, which is about half as long.

Come Back Little Sheba - Heartbreaking Scene
Shirley Booth won an Academy Award for her dramatic performance in "Come Back, Little Sheba". She accepted her Oscar at the first televised Awards ceremony in 1953. Here are the most sentimental scenes at the conclusion of a certifiable 3 hankie affair! This tear jerker remains one of my favorites!

Our Miss Brooks - First Audition Show (Shirley Booth)
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast on CBS from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name. The show was a hit on radio from the outset; within eight months of its launch as a regular series, the show landed several honors, including four, for Eve Arden, who won polls in four individual publications of the time. Arden had actually been the third choice to play the title role. Harry Ackerman, at the time CBS's West Coast director of programming, wanted Shirley Booth for the part, but as he told historian Gerald Nachman many years later, he realized Booth was too focused on the underpaid downside of public school teaching at the time to have fun with the role. Details Tonight's Broadcast "The New School Superintendant" Starring: Shirley Booth as Connie Brooks Original Air Date: April 9, 1948 Directed By Edward Gray Downs Script Written By Don Ettlinger, Norman Tokar, Ed Jurist ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Our Miss Brooks: Audition: Shirley Booth / Mother's Day / Audition: Eve Arden
Our Miss Brooks is an American situation comedy starring Eve Arden as a sardonic high school English teacher. It began as a radio show broadcast from 1948 to 1957. When the show was adapted to television (1952--56), it became one of the medium's earliest hits. In 1956, the sitcom was adapted for big screen in the film of the same name. Connie (Constance) Brooks (Eve Arden), an English teacher at fictional Madison High School. Osgood Conklin (Gale Gordon), blustery, gruff, crooked and unsympathetic Madison High principal, a near-constant pain to his faculty and students. (Conklin was played by Joseph Forte in the show's first episode; Gordon succeeded him for the rest of the series' run.) Occasionally Conklin would rig competitions at the school--such as that for prom queen--so that his daughter Harriet would win. Walter Denton (Richard Crenna, billed at the time as Dick Crenna), a Madison High student, well-intentioned and clumsy, with a nasally high, cracking voice, often driving Miss Brooks (his self-professed favorite teacher) to school in a broken-down jalopy. Miss Brooks' references to her own usually-in-the-shop car became one of the show's running gags. Philip Boynton (Jeff Chandler on radio, billed sometimes under his birth name Ira Grossel); Robert Rockwell on both radio and television), Madison High biology teacher, the shy and often clueless object of Miss Brooks' affections. Margaret Davis (Jane Morgan), Miss Brooks' absentminded landlady, whose two trademarks ...

1964 Ford Falcon with Shirley Booth Hazel advert
Edsel Ford first used the term "Falcon" for a more luxurious Ford he designed in 1935. He decided the new car did not fit with Ford's other offerings, so this design eventually became the Mercury. Historically, the "Big Three" auto manufacturers (GM, Ford and Chrysler), focused purely on the larger and more profitable vehicles in the US and Canadian markets. Towards the end of the 1950s, all three manufacturers realized that this strategy would no longer work. Large automobiles were becoming increasingly expensive thanks to wage inflation, making smaller European cars such as Volkswagens increasingly attractive. Furthermore, many American families were now in the market for a second car, and market research showed that women especially thought that the full-size car had grown too large and cumbersome. At the same time, that research showed that many buyers would prefer to buy US or Canadian if the domestic manufacturers offered a smaller, cheaper car. Thus, all three introduced compact cars: the Valiant from Chrysler (becoming the Plymouth Valiant in 1961), the rear-engined Chevrolet Corvair, and the Ford Falcon. Competition also came from smaller Studebaker, with the Lark, and AMC with its Rambler. The project to produce a compact sedan at Ford, which later became Falcon, was started and sponsored by Robert S. McNamara who was then the General Manager of Ford Division. He commissioned a team to create what by American standards of the time a small car, but elsewhere in ...
