Mary Janice Rule (August 15, 1931 – October 17, 2003), better known by her stage name Janice Rule, was an American actress.

Early life and career[link]

Born in Norwood, Ohio, her career included stage, screen and television work. Rule studied ballet and began dancing in Chicago nightclubs in her teens. She soon attracted attention in Hollywood and made her film debut in 1951. Among her noteworthy film roles were Emily Stewart in The Chase, Virginia in Goodbye My Fancy, Willie in Robert Altman's 3 Women, journalist Kate Newman in Costa Gavras' 1982 political thriller Missing, Burt Lancaster's bitter ex-lover in The Swimmer, and Kevin Costner's mother in the bicycle racing film American Flyers.

She was pictured on the cover of Life magazine on Jan. 8, 1951, as a rising young actress. Her films in the 1950s included Starlift, Holiday for Sinners, A Woman's Devotion and Bell, Book and Candle, in which she was the strait-laced fiancée who loses James Stewart.

Rule was in the original cast of William Inge's Picnic, which was also Paul Newman's Broadway debut. She played Madge Owens, the naïve beauty. Among her other Broadway shows were The Flowering Peach, The Happiest Girl in the World and Michael V. Gazzo's Night Circus, a 1958 production with Ben Gazzara.

She was troubled by the attitude toward women's beauty in the studios in the early 1950s. She was afraid of losing her individuality and fought to retain a sense of her own identity. She was in great demand during this era precisely because she could depict strong, non-conventional women. The jaded publicists and studio make up artists described her as "being careless about her appearance." In 1960 she played Elena Nardos, the roommate of Cloris Leachman's character, Marilyn Parker, in the Checkmate episode "The Mask of Vengeance". She appeared as different characters in three episodes of Route 66.

On television she appeared as Barbara Webb and Barbara Wells opposite David Janssen in two episodes of The Fugitive entitled "Wife Killer" and "The Walls of Night". She also appeared in The Twilight Zone episode "Nightmare as a Child."

Personal life[link]

Rule had a brief engagement to Farley Granger in 1956. They had appeared in the Broadway play The Carefree Tree in 1955. Then followed a relationship with Ralph Meeker, Meeker had played "Hal" in Picnic.

Rule married and then divorced three men, N. Richard Nash, Robert Thom, and Ben Gazzara.

During the 1960s she became interested in psychoanalysis. She began studying it in 1973 and received a Ph.D. 10 years later from the Southern California Psychoanalytic Institute in Los Angeles. She practiced in New York and Los Angeles and continued to act occasionally until her death from a cerebral hemorrhage in 2003.

She is survived by her daughters, Kate Thom Fitzgerald and Elizabeth Gazzara, both of Brooklyn; her sisters, Kathleen Rule, of Oceano, Calif.; Ann Nader, of San Marcos, Calif.; and Emily Forbes, of Las Cruces, N.M.; and her brother Ralph, of Mallorca, Spain.

Steve Ihnat (August 7, 1934 – May 12, 1972) was a Czechoslovakian-born actor and director. He immigrated to Canada when he was five years old, and later became a United States citizen.

Early life[link]

Born Stefan Ihnat, he was raised on a farm in Lynden, Ontario. His family settled there after fleeing his native Czechoslovakia in 1939, when he was five years old. Ihnat, his mother, father, and two young boys from other families left Czechoslovakia three days before Prague was closed.

Ihnat became hooked on acting when he played a child role in an amateur theatre near Lynden. He said, "I knew this was the only thing I wanted to do with my life." He also said "I think wanting to act started when I was about 14 as an escape valve to my environment. I was raised on a farm and I decided I wanted to be everything in life. Acting is the best way to do it."

Film and television career[link]

Ihnat moved to the United States in 1958 to pursue a career in acting and attended the Pasadena Playhouse. He gained United States citizenship. At a time when he had difficulty finding work he enlisted in the U.S. Army for two years and served at Headquarters and Headquarters U.S. Army, Port Inchon, South Korea. In 1960, Pvt. Ihnat won second prize in the Republic of Korea poetry contest for his entry titled "Toil in the Night."

Ihnat guest-starred in several television series during the 1960s and is best known by Star Trek fans as Garth of Izar from the Star Trek: The Original Series episode "Whom Gods Destroy" The Fugitive episode "Cry Uncle" "The Walls of Night" Ihnat held over seventy guest star credits in such well known series as Gunsmoke ("Exodus 21:22", "Jenny" with Lisa Gerritsen (December 28, 1970), and "Noose of Gold"), Bonanza ("A Dream to Dream" and "Terror at 2:00"), The Virginian ("Jed" and "Last Grave at Socorro Creek"), Mission: Impossible ("The Mind of Stefan Miklos"), Cimarron Strip ("The Hunted"), I Dream of Jeannie ("My Master the Rainmaker"), Mannix ("End Game" and "To Catch the Lightning"), The F.B.I. ("Region of Peril" and "The Prey"), The Outer Limits ("The Inheritors"), The Name of the Game ("The Chains of Command" and "Nightmare"), Medical Center (TV series) ("Fright and Flight") and Perry Mason ("The Case of the Duplicate Case") but never achieved major fame for starring in movies or his own television series.

As an actor, he first achieved wide notice for his portrayal of a mind-controlled lieutenant in the science fiction television series The Outer Limits. His extended speech at the end of that double episode, "The Inheritors — Part 1 & Part 2" (1964), is one of the most affecting moments in television. Ihnat eventually became one of the most in-demand A-list guest stars of the 1960s.

Ihnat's most famous role in Mission: Impossible was that of brilliant Soviet Union investigator Stefan Miklos in the 1969 episode "The Mind of Stefan Miklos," widely praised as one of the most cerebral and intelligent episodes of the entire series. While he played other roles (mostly villains) in the show, his performance in this episode is his most memorable.^[1][2]

From 1964 to 1968 he appeared in eight feature films. He often played villains, using his abilities to subtly turn one-dimensional characters into complex and multi-dimensional antagonists. In 1967, Lamont Johnson cast him in the Richard Boone film Kona Coast in which Inhat played a murderous playboy in Hawaii doping up teenagers and causing mayhem to Boone's property and person ^[3]. In 1968, he memorably portrayed a murderous thug in the film Madigan, starring Richard Widmark and Henry Fonda and a NASA administrator in the film Countdown, directed by Robert Altman and starring James Caan and Robert Duvall. Other films of note during this period included In Like Flint and Hour of the Gun.

Ihnat was a screenwriter and director as well. He wrote, produced and starred in "Do Not Throw Cushions Into The Ring," which while never released, led to his receiving the plum position of directing The Honkers, starring James Coburn, with whom he had appeared in In Like Flint. He also co-wrote the movie with Stephen Lodge.

Death[link]

Steve Ihnat was married to Sally Carter-Ihnat who had been a Playboy Playmate of the Month in May 1962. Sally had a daughter from a previous marriage. Steve's son, Stefan, was born one month before Steve died. At the age of thirty-seven, he suffered a heart attack while visiting the Cannes Film Festival in France, where he was promoting his "Do Not Throw Cushions in the Ring." He died on his wife's 30th birthday. His death was later announced on the Emmys telecast.

Ihnat is interred in the Westwood Village Memorial Park Cemetery in Los Angeles. His son, Stefan, who died at age 32 from complications of diabetes, is interred next to him.

Sally Carter-Ihnat was married to Hollywood Squares host Peter Marshall from 1977 to 1988.

George Richard Chamberlain (born March 31, 1934)^[1] is an American stage and screen actor and singer, who became a teen idol in the title role of the television show Dr. Kildare (1961–1966).

Since then, he has appeared in several mini-series such as Shōgun (1980) and The Thorn Birds (1983), many successful films, and performed classical stage roles and worked in the musical theatre.

Early life[link]

Chamberlain was born in 1934 in Beverly Hills, California, the son of Elsa Winnifred (née Matthews) and Charles Axiom Chamberlain, who was a salesman.^[2][3][4] Chamberlain's father was well known within Alcoholics Anonymous, having traveled for years speaking at A.A. conventions. In 1952, Richard Chamberlain graduated from Beverly Hills High School and later attended Pomona College^[5] (class of 1956).^[6]

Chamberlain co-founded a Los Angeles-based theatre group, Company of Angels, and began appearing in TV series in the 1950s. In 1961 he gained widespread fame as the young intern, Dr. Kildare, in the MGM television series of the same name. His singing ability also led to some hit singles in the early 1960s. One of them was the "Theme from Dr. Kildare" entitled "Three Stars Will Shine Tonight", which hit number 10 according to the Billboard Hot 100 Charts. Dr. Kildare ended in 1966, after which Chamberlain began performing on the theatre circuit. In 1966, he was cast opposite Mary Tyler Moore in the ill-fated Broadway musical Breakfast at Tiffany's, co-starring Priscilla Lopez, which, after an out-of-town tryout period, closed after only four previews. Decades later he returned to Broadway in revivals of My Fair Lady and The Sound of Music.^{[citation needed]}

At the end of the 1960s he spent a period in England where he played in repertory theatre and in the BBC's Portrait of a Lady adaptation, becoming recognized as a serious actor. In 1969 he starred opposite Katharine Hepburn in the film The Madwoman of Chaillot. While in England he took vocal coaching and in 1969 performed the title role in Hamlet for the Birmingham Repertory Theatre, becoming the first American to play the role there since John Barrymore in 1929. He received excellent notices and reprised the role for television, for The Hallmark Hall of Fame, in 1970.

In the 1970s, Chamberlain enjoyed success as a leading man in films such as The Music Lovers (1970), Lady Caroline Lamb (playing Lord Byron, 1973), The Three Musketeers (1973), The Lady's Not for Burning (1974), The Towering Inferno (in a villainous turn as a dishonest engineer, 1974), The Last Wave (1977), and The Count of Monte Cristo (1975). In The Slipper and the Rose (1976), a musical version of the Cinderella story, co-starring Gemma Craven, he displayed his vocal talents. A TV movie, William Bast's The Man in the Iron Mask (1977), followed.

Chamberlain later appeared in several popular television miniseries (earning him a nickname of "King of the Miniseries"), including Centennial (1978-79), Shōgun (1980), and The Thorn Birds (1983) as Father Ralph de Bricassart with Rachel Ward co-starring. In the 1980s he appeared as leading man with King Solomon's Mines (1985) opposite newcomer Sharon Stone, and also played Jason Bourne in the television film version of The Bourne Identity (1988).

Since 1990[link]

Since the 1990s, Chamberlain has mostly appeared in television movies, on stage and as a guest star on series including The Drew Carey Show and Will & Grace. He starred as Henry Higgins in the 1993-94 Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. In the fall of 2005, Chamberlain appeared in the title role of Ebenezer Scrooge in the Broadway National Tour of Scrooge: The Musical. In 2006, Chamberlain guest starred in an episode of the BBC drama series Hustle as well as season 4 of Nip/Tuck. In 2007, Chamberlain guest starred in episode 80 (Season 4, Episode 8, "Distant Past") of Desperate Housewives as Glen Wingfield, Lynette Scavo's stepfather. In 2008 and 2009, he appeared as King Arthur in the national tour of Monty Python's Spamalot. In 2010, he appeared as Archie Leach in season 3, episode 3 of the series Leverage,^[7] as well as two episodes of season 4 of Chuck where he played a villain known only as The Belgian.^[8] Chamberlain has also appeared in several episodes of Brothers & Sisters, playing an old friend and love-interest of Saul's.^[9] He also appeared in the indie film We Are the Hartmans in 2011. In 2012 Chamberlain appeared on stage in the Pasadena Playhouse as Dr. Sloper in the play The Heiress.

Personal life[link]

Chamberlain was romantically involved with television actor Wesley Eure in the early 1970s. He resided in Hawaii with his partner, actor-writer-producer Martin Rabbett, from 1976 to 2010. Rabbett and Chamberlain starred together, among others, in Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold, in which they played brothers Allan and Robeson Quatermain. In the spring of 2010 Chamberlain moved from Maui to Los Angeles because of work possibilities, leaving Rabbett in Hawaii, at least temporarily.^[10]

Chamberlain was outed by the French women's magazine Nous Deux in December 1989 at the age of 55, but it was not until 2003 that he officially came out as gay in his autobiography, Shattered Love (ISBN 0060087439).

In 1962 Chamberlain won the Golden Apple award for Most Cooperative actor. In 1963 he won a Golden Globe award for Best TV Star - Male for: Dr. Kildare (1961). He won the Photoplay Award for Most Popular Male Star for three consecutive years, including 1962, 1963, 1964.

In 1980 he won the Golden Apple award for Male Star of the Year. In 1981 he won a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a TV-Series - Drama for: Shogun (1980). In 1982 he won the Clavell de Plata award at the Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival as Best Actor for The Last Wave (1977). In 1984 he won a Golden Globe award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for TV for: The Thorn Birds (1983). In 1985 he won the Aftonbladet TV Prize (Sweden) for Best Foreign TV Personality - Male.

On 12 March 2011, Chamberlain received the Steiger Award (Germany) for accomplishments in the arts.

Raymond Hart Massey (August 30, 1896 – July 29, 1983) was a Canadian/American actor.

Early life[link]

Massey was born in Toronto, Ontario, the son of Anna (née Vincent), who was born in Illinois, and Chester Daniel Massey, the wealthy owner of the Massey-Ferguson Tractor Company.^[1] Massey's family could trace their ancestry back to the American Revolutionary War. He attended secondary school briefly at Upper Canada College, before transferring to Appleby College^[2] in Oakville, Ontario, and graduated from university at University of Toronto, where both he and his cousin were active members in The Kappa Alpha Society, and Balliol College, Oxford.

At the outbreak of World War I, he joined the Canadian Army, serving with the artillery on the Western Front. He returned to Canada suffering shell-shock and was engaged as an army instructor for American officers at Yale. In 1918, he was sent to serve in Siberia, where he made his first stage appearance, entertaining American troops on occupation duty. Severely wounded in action in France, he was sent home, where he eventually worked in the family business, selling farm implements.

Acting career[link]

Drawn to the theatre, in 1922, he appeared on the London stage. His first movie role was High Treason in 1927. In 1929 he directed the London premiere of The Silver Tassie. He played Sherlock Holmes in The Speckled Band in 1931, the first sound film version of the story. In 1934, he starred in The Scarlet Pimpernel and, in 1936, he starred in H. G. Wells's Things to Come. Despite being Canadian, Massey became famous for his quintessential American roles such as abolitionist John Brown in 1940's Santa Fe Trail and again as John Brown in the 1955 low-budget film Seven Angry Men. His second portrayal of Brown was much more sympathetic, presenting him as a well-intentioned, but misguided figure, while in Santa Fe Trail he was presented as a wild-eyed lunatic.

Although there was a great outcry when a Canadian was cast as an American president, he scored a great triumph on Broadway in Robert E. Sherwood's play Abe Lincoln in Illinois, and repeated his role in the 1940 film version (for which he was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor). Massey again portrayed Lincoln in the 1956 production of The Day Lincoln Was Shot on Ford Star Jubilee, and (a wordless appearance this time) in 1962's How the West Was Won. (A fellow actor remarked that Massey wouldn't be satisfied with his Lincoln impersonation until someone assassinated him.)

In 1941, Massey starred in George Bernard Shaw's The Doctor's Dilemma, opposite Katharine Cornell, opening just one week before Pearl Harbor. During the war, he teamed up with Cornell and other leading actors in a revival of Shaw's Candida to benefit the Army Emergency Fund and the Navy Relief Society.^[3]

On stage in the 1953 dramatic reading of Stephen Vincent Benét's John Brown's Body, Massey, in addition to narrating along with Tyrone Power and Judith Anderson, took on both the roles of John Brown and Abe Lincoln in the same work.

Massey portrayed the character of Jonathan Brewster in the film version of Arsenic and Old Lace. The character had been created by Boris Karloff for the stage version and the character was written to resemble Karloff (an ongoing joke in the play and film). Even though the film was released in 1944, it was shot in 1941, at which time Karloff was still contracted to the Broadway play, and could not be released for the filming, unlike his costars Josephine Hull, Jean Adair and John Alexander. Massey and Karloff had appeared together in the 1932 James Whale suspense film The Old Dark House.

He rejoined the Canadian Army for World War II, though he would eventually be released from service and return to acting work.

Following the war, he became an American citizen. His memorable film roles thereafter included portraying the husband of Joan Crawford during her Oscar-nominated role from 1947's Possessed and the doomed publishing tycoon Gail Wynand in 1949's The Fountainhead, opposite Gary Cooper.

Massey became well-known on television in the 1950s and 1960s, especially as Doctor Gillespie in the popular series Dr. Kildare. He and his son, Daniel, were cast as father and son in 1961's The Queen's Guards. Massey played a Canadian on screen only once, in 49th Parallel (1941).

Massey was married three times.

1. Margery Fremantle from 1921 to 1929 (divorce); they had one child, architect Geoffrey Massey.
2. Adrianne Allen from 1929 to 1939 (divorce); the noted London and Broadway stage actress. They had two children who followed him into acting: Anna Massey and Daniel Massey.
3. Dorothy Whitney from 1939 until her death.

His high-profile estrangement and then divorce from Adrianne Allen was the inspiration for Ruth Gordon and Garson Kanin's script for the film Adam's Rib (1949), starring Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, and indeed Massey ended up marrying the lawyer who represented him in court, Dorothy Whitney, while his then ex-wife Allen married the opposing lawyer, William Dwight Whitney.^[4][5]
