Gamelan Gita Asmara Show May 19, 2012 - Highlights
GAMELAN GITA ASMARA was founded as a student ensemble in 1996 by Michael Tenzer. In 2005 a core group of players split from the class group, and in 2006 Gamelan Gita Asmara became a Registered Non-Profit Society. Using a new kind of Balinese gamelan set called Semaradhana, the group learns Balinese repertoire on an intensive practice schedule. Members bring long-term focus and commitment to rehearsal and performance. Over the years, Gita Asmara has commissioned several new works from its first guest artistic director Dewa Ketut Alit (in residence 2001-04), its current director I Wayan Sudirana, and composers Colin MacDonald and Jocelyn Morlock. Gita Asmara is a dedicated collective committed to the discipline required to perform this chllenging music together, the rewards of making something of aesthetic and social value, and the joy of sharing this with their audiences. I Wayan Sudirana was born in Ubud, Bali in 1980. He is a graduate of the ISI Balinese Arts Institute and a member of the Çudamani collective. He is one of Bali's most gifted young musicians, has composed and taught actively all over the island, and toured abroad frequently. He has been visiting artist-in residence at UBC since 2004 and is completing a PhD in Music at UBC. Michael Tenzer is a Professor of Music at UBC, a composer, and author of scholarship on Balinese music and other topics.

Gamelan Bali (Balinese Gamelan) - Traditional Music
Bali Island is one of the thousands islands constructing the Indonesian Archipelago that has long been famous as a leading tourist destination in South Pacific or even in the world for its exotic and vibrant art and culture, natural beauties and the hospitality of the people. Balinese Gamelan music is similar to Javanese Gamelan music. The music is in cycle too, however, it is usually faster. One of the characteristic of Balinese gamelan music is that, it has a lot of sudden changes in tempo and dynamics. Like the Javanese gamelan, the instruments in Balinese gamelan includes metallophones and gongs. However, there are more metallophones than gongs in Balinese gamelan. The metal keys in Balinese metallophones are ticker than those of Javanese. These Balinese metallophones produce very bright sound. Another characteristic of Balinese Gamelan music is the used of cymbals. These cymbals create fast rattling sound that usually cannot be found in Javanese Gamelan music. Gending Musik Jawa (Gamelan Jawa) - Javanese Gamelan
The gamelan is a musical ensemble from Indonesia, typically from the islands of Bali or Java, featuring a variety of instruments such as metallophones, xylophones, drums and gongs; bamboo flutes, bowed and plucked strings. Vocalists may also be included. The term refers more to the set of instruments than to the players of those instruments. A gamelan is a set of instruments as a distinct entity, built and tuned to stay together - instruments from different gamelan are generally not interchangeable. The word gamelan comes from the Javanese word gamels, meaning "to strike or hammer", and the suffix an, which makes the root a collective noun. It is mostly played by traditional people. Gameleste: custom instrument for Björk
Björk commissioned several custom instruments for the shows surrounding the release of 'Biophilia' - one is a hybrid gamelan celeste; the original steel bars of a vintage orchestral celeste were replaced with bronze tonebars hand-made by UK cymbalsmith Matt Nolan, and the instrument was rebuilt and MIDIfied by Iceland's top organ-maker, Björgvin Tòmasson.
I filmed Matt in his workshop in UK, then we flew to Iceland to finish commissioning the instrument in Björgvin's seaside organ factory. Due to the timescales involved, it was recorded in-situ for Björk's 'Biophilia' project, which was released shortly after.
This is a 2-minute brief montage of the making of the 'Gameleste' - the soundtrack was composed by Matt Nolan largely using treated percussive sounds.

Little Boxes is a music box concept for iPad. It consists of a tangible part composed of three separate music boxes that interact with an iPad and an application. When placing one of the boxes on the iPad, it recognizes it and activates. The idea is that each box contains its own universe revealed by the action of the crank with an animation and melody proper to each. The aim is to give a new dimension to the music box, and transcribe visual sensations that don't exist in a standard music box. This work reflects my desire to play with the physical and digital elements by making them interact. It allowed me to embrace different areas, and confront myself with creative and technical challenges. The result is the creation of a world through the music box, where everyone can enter and interact with it. The tracks used for this project are courtesy of the french artist Colleen / Album "Colleen et les boîtes à musique" (http://bit.ly/NfdsLk).

Robotic Gamelan
A video on Casa da Música's Robotic Gamelan, developed by myself, José Luís Azevedo and Miguel Ferraz in 2008/09. It started as an evolution of 'Lula' - http://www.vimeo.com/1379563 . The sound is awful, sorry about that!
A network of several independent robots play some of the javanese gamelan instruments: 2 bonangs, 2 demungs, 3 kenongs, 1 saron, 2 peking and 1 slentem, some gongs and an additional slentem in the near future. This network is controlled by a computer sending serial information using Max/MSP.
In this specific case, all the robots are being played using custom controllers made out of an Ikea salad bowl, an Arduino and two ultrasonic distance sensors.
