Nyima Lhamo - Nga'i Phayul Yulshul (My Beautiful Hometown Yushu)
Yulshul Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Tibetan: ཡུལ་ཤུལ་བོད་རིགས་རང་སྐྱོང་ཁུལ།), commonly known as Yushu is an autonomous prefecture of southwestern Qinghai province. Largely inhabited by Tibetans, the prefecture has an area of 188794 square kilometres (72894 sq mi) and it's seat is located in the town of Gyêgu in Yushu County, which is the place of the old Tibetan trade mart of Jyekundo. The official source of the Yellow River lies within the prefecture. Historically, the area belongs to the cultural realm of Kham in eastern Tibet. On 14 April 2010, an earthquake struck the prefecture, registering a magnitude of 6.9 (USGS, EMSC). It originated in the Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Qinghai, at 07:49 local time. The singer comes from Nangchen county - it is located in Southwest Yushu Tibet Autonomous Prefecture. Nangchen ནང་ཆེན་, was once one of 5 independent kingdoms in the eastern Tibet region. Nangchen is very remote being over 1000km from Xining and Lhasa and over 1200 kilometers from Chengdu. It borders Jyekundo (Yushu) county to the northeast, Dzado county to the northwest, Riwoche county to the southwest and Chamdo county to the southeast. Around 60000 people live in the county with Tibetans making up over 98% of the total population. There are some nomads who live in Nangchen, but a larger percentage of people here are farmers. The Mekong River, known as the Dza Chu in Tibetan, flows throughout the county. Nangchen is rich ...

Yushu earthquake aftermath
This footage was taken a few days after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake struck Yushu county in Eastern Tibet. Its capital, Jyekundo, was flattened. Wangdrak Rinpoche helped in rescue efforts and is custodian to 35 children who lost their parents in the quake. Our gebchakgonpa.org website is also the gateway to the Yushu Orphans Earthquake Fund. Yushu scenes 2010 - 2011
A few short scenes from Jyekundo taken over a period of 10 months after an earthquake leveled the area in April 2010. This city is the the administrative seat of the county of Yushu, to the north of Gebchak Gonpa. Wangdrak Rinpoche was directly involved in rescue efforts.
April: These children are shaken and sad after their parents were killed in the earthquake. Filmed just days after the quake, they are standing in front of the stove that protected them from falling rubble and saved their lives.
Newly orphaned, Wangdrak Rinpoche became their custodian. How? Days after the quake people started coming forward, requesting Rinpoche to take on the orphans. He thought - "I'm a lama and the meaning of my life as a bodhisattva is to help where help is needed. I do what I can to help the Gebchak nuns and that is a lot for me, but here are these kids so destitute, compared to the nuns they're much worse off. There's no way I can refuse to help these orphans. I must do the best I can to care for them."
Over time more orphans grouped around him.
September 2010: Taken from a hillside near Jyekundo town, every blue spot visible is a tent. Thousands of residents continued to live and work in tents during the summer and into the long cold winter of 2010-2011 (temperatures in winter fall below minus 20 degrees Celsius / minus 4 degrees Fahrenheit).
January 2011: Ten months later, Wangdrak Rinpoche is responsible for more than 30 orphans. As the children eagerly open their gifts of books, Rinpoche explains to visitors how the children survived the earthquake. The baby in her mother’s arms on the right was in utero during the quake which killed the father.

HELP Rinpoche fulfill his wish to build a small orphanage to keep the children together and provide them with a well-rounded education in a nurturing environment.

YUSHU, QINGHAI PROVINCE (美丽的青海玉树)- ( Travelogue )
Travelogue 2011-03-15 Ethnic Odyssey 7: In this episode of Travelogue, come to Yushu for a closer look at the Tibetans of Qinghai and their horse-racing festival. YUSHU Yushu Tibetan Autonomous Region is located to the west of Qinghai Province, bordering Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and Sichuan Province. It covers a vast land area of 267000 sq km and has a population of only 0.36 million. The Yellow River, the Yangtze River and the Mekong River, the largest river in Southeast Asia, all originate in Yushu Region. Yushu does not have four distinct seasons, and is extremely cold in winter. The average temperature is -0.8° C, and the average annual precipitation is 463.7 mm. Yushu is rich in natural resources. Runoff of local rivers amounts to 32.4 billion m3, while the theoretical reserves of hydro energy total 5.4 million kw. In addition, mineral resources such as gold, silver, copper, iron, aluminum, coal, sulfur, crystal, and jade are abundant. Yushu currently is not accessible by railways and airports. State Highway 109 (Qinghai-Tibet) connects Yushu with Xining, Lanzhou, Sichuan and Chongqing. There are also trunk highways connecting all the counties under the jurisdiction of Yushu. Nyima Lhamo - Tashi Pa'i Khatag (Auspicious Khatag) Kham Yushu Song
song: བཀྲ་ཤིས་པའི་ཁ་བཏགས་ tashipa'i khatag (auspicious khatag). Khatags are made of cotton, silk or other materials. They look more like a long scarf and have auspicious symbols or mantras inscribed or woven into the fabric. It represents the sincerety of ones offering, with no negative thoughts or motives in mind. They come predominantly in shades of white or ivory, due to the purity of the color but you will also find them in Blue,Red,Green and Yellow/Gold Yellow. It is a part of Tibetan way of life from birth to death and between. It is also used as a sign of recognition of one's love or respect for another. The offering of Khatag is probably one of the most well known customs of Tibetan culture. Something that one could call a Tibetan bouquet, that is very reusable and one specific Khata may travel the world over. Offering of Khatags would fall under 2 groups very broadly, with greetings and well wishes being the common in both offerings: to show respect/gratitude and affection/celebration. Traditionally, Kham is said to cover the area known as the 'four rivers and six ranges' (Tib. ཆུ་བཞི་སྒང་དྲུག་, chushyi gang druk). The 'four rivers' are the Machu (Yellow River), Dzachu (Mekong River) , Drichu (Yangtze River), and Ngulchu (Salween River). The 'six ranges' are the Zalmo Range (Tib. ཟལ་མོ་སྒང་, Wyl. zal mo sgang), Tsawa Range (Tib. ཚ་བ་སྒང་, Wyl. tsha ba sgang), Markham Range (Tib. སྨར་ཁམས་སྒང་, Wyl ...
