Suwon Day Trip - Level Up (Ep. 21)
Day trip to fantastic Suwon! --- Expand for more info! --- We begin the day at Seoul Station to catch our train. After only a 30 minute ride, we arrive in Suwon and make our way to our destination, the Hwaseong Fortress! Our first stop is the palace. Established at the eastern edge of Mt. Paldalsan, the Hwaseong Haenggung was used both as the Suwon government office and a temporary palace after it was built in the new town of Suwon in 1789 (13th year of King Jeongjo) and was finally completed between 1794 and 1796. It was largely destroyed during the period of Japanese imperialism, but restoration of the palace grounds began in 1996 and it was opened to the public in October 2003. Surrounding the palace is the awesome Hwaseong Fortress, a defensive perimeter wall extending many kilometers around the palace. It is an amazing example of Korean architecture and following it around the city is a remarkable journey. If you go to Suwon, be sure to make it up to Mirohanjeong, the mountaintop lookout. It's well worth the effort and the view is spectacular. And, of course, after a long day of hiking around, we finish the day with a meal of Samgupsal and some Soju. I love Korea! This is a must-see in Korea! For more information, visit the following website: hs.suwon.ne.kr Music by Rachel Palmer. Thanks for watching!

Travel South Korea - Visiting the Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon
Take a tour of Hwaseong Fortress in Suwon, Korea, Republic of -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats. South Korea boasts the Hwaseong Fortress which lies in the country's Suwon region. Built in the 1790's, this grand monument took about 2 and a half years to complete. Bricks were used in the construction of the fortress, which can be easily seen throughout the structure. The distinguishing features of Hwaseong Fortress are its defensive elements which include an arrow-launching platform, battlement, and crenelated parapets. Its basic layout and designs were based on a relatively new system in architecture known as the Silhak movement. The fortress embodies an amalgam of designs from the 3 countries of Korea, China and Japan, fused with elements of contemporary architectural science.

Our Apartments in Suwon, South Korea
A video tour of our two Suwon apartments. We are a couple teaching in South Korea. Instead of couple accommodations, our school provided two single apartments, which is really not bad at all. We enjoy our place quite a lot.

American Dreams - Suwon's Toilet House
What to do on a crappy day?? Go to the Toilet House (Museum)! Suwon's known in Korea for being the place to pop a squat. Prior to the 1980's public toilets were generally fairly ramshackle and disgusting. As former mayor of Suwon and the founder of the World Toilet Association, Sim Jae-Duck (aka. Mr. Toilet) helped to make the country a place to sit down and do your business. Special thanks to my friends for taking me along!

Suwon's Hwaseong Fortress on CNNGo!
Truth be told, I've been sitting on a little news for a few weeks. A while back I decided to try my hand at producing a QiRanger Adventure for a slightly different market. I opted to submit a piece to CNNGo, the Asian travel arm of CNN International. To my delight, they accepted my pitch and I set off filming one of my favorite places. Not only did I need to write a short article, I needed to capture the beauty of Suwon Fortress and do it proud (most notably, since my last video of this place was an 11 minute ramble as I walked through its grounds). I shot video over four days. Yes, four days. I had to make sure my costuming was set in a way that I could easily keep it consistent throughout the process. I also enlisted some help on the project. Jo came out with me three times and operated the camera while I was out doing narrations. I also asked my friend Daichen to write the music for the main portion. He came through and I'm really pleased with the tune. youtube.com While editing the video, I had to cut so much out. To think I was worried that I wouldn't have enough to fill the running time and I wound up with just the opposite... five minutes wasn't enough to include all the great video I captured, but certainly enough to focus on what story I wanted to tell. I would be honored if you'd surf over to CNNGo and check out the video here! www.cnngo.com Thanks and I look forward to reading your comments on what you think of this first endeavor with CNNGo.
