Civil Rights - 2:55
Education - 3:54
Immigration - 4:26
Although there are many other views of the Libertarian Party, this is mean to give a brief and informative introduction to the Libertarian Party's platform.

The 2020 presidential election gave libertarian voters few good options: A serially dishonest and incompetent leader who bungled the COVID-19 pandemic and imposed trade and immigration restrictions versus someone who promised $11 trillion in new spending, who played a role in many of the greatest policy failures of the last 30 years, such as the Iraq War, the PATRIOT Act, and the expansion of the drug war.
And then there was the Libertarian Party (L.P.). After nominating a pair of popular former governors to run in 2016 who pulled just over 3 percent of the popular vote, the party backed Jo Jorgensen, a Clemson University psychology lecturer who was featured on the L.P. ticket in the 1990s but remains largely unknown outside of libertarian circles. She drew just over 1 percent.
So is the party still a worthwhile project?
Reason spoke to several party insiders about what they think went right and wrong in 2020, the L.P.'s internal divisions, and the party's strategy for the future.
"You had something in the Jorgensen-Cohen ticket that appealed to anybody, no matter where you were in the party," says Alex Merced, the L.P.'s former vice chair.
He thinks that even though Jorgensen fell short of 2016 L.P. presidential candidate Gary Johnson's vote share, the unifying effect it had among libertarians was positive for the movement.
"I think that when you try to water down your messaging to appeal to everyone, you sort of appeal to no one," says Angela McArdle, who is chair of the Los Angeles Libertarian Party and who plans to run for chair of the national party in 2022.
She's affiliated with the Mises Caucus, which believes libertarians have been far too willing to compromise their principles and water down their rhetoric to make alliances with the political left or right. They reject the "need to make Faustian bargains" in the interest of gaining mainstream acceptance.
The L.P. does currently hold more than 200 elected seats, mostly local positions like treasurer, city council member, school board member, or small-town mayor, according to its website. The most powerful members of the party holding office are Jeff Hewitt, Riverside County supervisor, who ran in a nonpartisan race, and Rep. Justin Amash (L–Mich.), who wasn't elected as a Libertarian but switched party affiliations. But Amash opted not to run for reelection in 2020.
Current L.P. Chair Joe Bishop-Henchman agrees with McArdle that electoral success begins at the local level.
"Just imagine how different the national political discussion would be if there was a caucus of…eight or 10 or 12 Libertarian senators who could really be significantly changing what's happening in Washington, D.C.," says Bishop-Henchman. "So how do you get to that? Well, we've got to elect more Libertarian House members…build up a deep bench of elected officials at the state and local level."
He says that while Jorgensen did worse than Johnson in 2016, the party has grown its registration roll significantly, which is now at a record 650,000 members.
"It's time that we get out of startup mode, and that we prove that we can do it," says Bishop-Henchman.

The Libertarian Party (L.P.) is under new management, tweeted Angela McArdle, shortly after she became the National Committee's new chair at its 2022 annual convention in Reno, Nevada, which was attended by more than 1,000 delegates from around the country.
"We're obviously at a crossroads right now," McArdle said during a debate for the chair position. "I hate to sound like a scumbag politician…but we are going to move heaven and earth to make this [party] functional and not embarrassing for you. We are going to change the country."
McArdle, who won her election with about 70 percent of the vote, is part of the Mises Caucus, which swept all the national leadership roles and is now in complete control of the nation's third-largest political party.
Mises Caucus supporters say they want to "make the Libertarian Party libertarian again," that it should no longer be concerned about offending progressives or Beltway types and shouldn't be afraid to reach out to the coalition that elected former President Donald Trump. McArdle says that the party faceplanted during the pandemic by failing to take a strong stance against lockdowns and vaccine mandates and that its messaging is far too tame and conventional to counter the power of the authoritarian state.
"If something like a lockdown or a vaccine mandate happens [again], we won't whiff the ball and humiliate ourselves and alienate everyone out there," she said in her acceptance speech.
Critics say they're shitposting edgelords who make controversial statements just to attract attention and that they have no interest in running viable candidates for office.

"The main function of the Libertarian Party is to try to make the United States a freer place," says Angela McArdle, who won her election for Libertarian National Committee chair with an overwhelming 70 percent of the vote at the party's national convention in Reno Nevada this May. "People disagree on what strategy to take to achieve that purpose. I believe there's room for both strategies: to send out strong messaging campaigns and to win elections."
McArdle had the backing of the Mises Caucus, whose candidates swept all the leadership positions at the convention. Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with her in Reno a day before she became the party's new chair to better understand what changes she wants to make to the party's messaging, political strategy and official policies.

"I think that the [Libertarian Party's] emphasis should be on getting us back to our roots as a country," says Justin Amash. "What this country is about is liberalism in the classical sense, the idea that people should be able to free…to make their own decisions about their lives, and government to the extent possible should just stay out of it."
Amash was a Republican congressman from Michigan once described by Politico as the "new Ron Paul in Congress" because of his willingness to buck party-line votes on principle. He switched his party affiliation to Libertarian in his fifth and final term, making him the party's highest officeholder since its founding in 1971. He explored a run for the Libertarian Party presidential nomination in 2020 before changing his mind, paving the way for a run by longtime Libertarian Party member Jo Jorgensen.
Amash was in Reno, Nevada during the Mises Caucus takeover of the Libertarian Party. Amash is not a member of the caucus but plans to remain in the party.
Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Amash in Reno to ask him about his views of the Mises Caucus, his vision for the future of the party, and his political ambitions for 2024 and beyond.

Libertarians had high hopes last presidential race. The candidates offered by the two major political parties were hated, so libertarians thought 2016 was their big chance.
It didn't turn out that way.
Still, Nicholas Sarwark, Chairman of the Libertarian Party, says it was a great success. "We tripled all previous records. In the 45-year history of the Libertarian Party, we've never had that kind of support from the electorate."
Johnson only got 3.5% of the vote. John Stossel asks, "is that really winning?" "We're growing, and they're dying," answers Sarwark. "Voter registration identity with Republicans and Democrats is dropping. Voter registration identity with Libertarians is the only party that's growing."
The fight isn't easy. Republicans and Democrats try to keep Libertarians off the ballot. But Sarwark says the plan for this year's midterm elections is "to be on the ballot in all 50 states. We'll definitely be on the ballot in all 50 states in 2020."
Gary Johnson helped the Libertarian Party get on ballots. "But it's not about any particular candidate" says Sarwark. "That's the real difference between the Libertarian Party and, say, Ross Perot. When Ross Perot gets tired of running for office, there's nothing there anymore."
Stossel talks to Sarwark about what we can learn from the last election, and what the future holds for libertarians and the Libertarian Party.
