Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.

It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.

Daisy and I took a ferry to Sakurajima Island, just of the coast of Kagoshima!
We ate some tasty mikan flavoured gelato, visited an onsen that looked over the water, and took in the glorious views of the stratovolcano that is Sakurajima. This island is a must-visit if you're in the area!
On the ferry, we tried the very famous tempura udon noodles. It came with a very soft boiled egg and tempura bits in the soup. You must try this when catching the ferry.
Once you arrive, it's best to check out the visitors centre to find out the best things to do. We caught the bus from the visitors centre to an onsen that overlooked the ocean. There are many onsens around the island but the one we visited was best for people who have tattoos.

4K drive in Kagoshima city located in the south of Kyushu island.
The city is famous for the view of Sakurajima, the most active volcano in Japan that frequently erupts and continuously sending up smoke from the top.
Sakurajima towers high over the bay and you will see its beautiful shape from everywhere in the city.
Kagoshima has a sister-city relationship with Napoli in Italy, which also has the iconic volcano, Mt. Vesuvius.
Sakurajima erupted on 2, 7, and 10 Dec 2020, a few days after this video was filmed.

The area around Kagoshima Chuo Station today was an area that developed as a castle town of the Satsuma domain in the olden days, and was a town where many low-ranking samurai lived. Around the Kotsuki River, there are many historic sites that are related to people who were active in the Meiji Restoration, such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi. Minamisatsuma
Minamisatsuma (南さつま市, Minamisatsuma-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
As of May 31, 2011, population data, the city has an estimated population of 39,012 with 18,711 households and a population density of 137.71 persons per km². The total area is 283.30 km².
The modern city of Minamisatsuma was established on November 7, 2005, from the merger of the old city of Kaseda, with the town of Kinpō (from Hioki District), and the towns of Bonotsu, Kasasa and Ōura (all from Kawanabe District).
Bansei Tokkō Peace Museum is located in the city.

Kagoshima
Kagoshima (鹿児島市, Kagoshima-shi) is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the "Naples of the Eastern world" for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and impressive stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.
Geography
Kagoshima City is approximately 40 minutes from Kagoshima Airport, and features shopping districts and malls located wide across the city. Transportation options in the city include the Shinkansen (bullet train), local train, city trams, buses, and ferries to-and-from Sakurajima. The large and modern Kagoshima City Aquarium, situated near a shopping district known as "Dolphin Port" and the Sakurajima Ferry Terminal, was established in 1997 along the docks and offers a direct view of Sakurajima. One of the best places to view the city (and Sakurajima) is from the Amuran Ferris wheel atop of Amu Plaza Kagoshima, and the shopping center attached to the central Kagoshima-Chūō Station. Just outside the city is the early-Edo Period Sengan-en (Isoteien) Japanese Garden. The garden was originally a villa belonging to the Shimadzu Family and is still maintained by descendants today. Outside the garden grounds is a Satsuma "kiriko" cut-glass factory where visitors are welcome to view the glass blowing and cutting processes, and the Shoko Shūseikan Museum, which was built in 1865 and registered as a National Historic Site in 1959. The former Shuseikan industrial complex and the former machine factory were submitted to the UNESCO World Heritage as part of a group list titled Modern Industrial Heritage Sites in Kyushu and Yamaguchi Prefecture.

This is a list of craters on Mars. There are hundreds of thousands of impact crater on Mars, but only some of them have names. This list here only contains named Martian craters starting with the letter H – N (see also lists for A – G and O – Z).
Large Martian craters (greater than 60 km in diameter) are named after famous scientists and science fiction authors; smaller ones (less than 60 km in diameter) get their names from towns on Earth. Craters cannot be named for living people, and small crater names are not intended to be commemorative - that is, a small crater isn't actually named after a specific town on Earth, but rather its name comes at random from a pool of terrestrial place names, with some exceptions made for craters near landing sites. Latitude and longitude are given as planetographic coordinates with west longitude.

4K drive in Kagoshima city located in the south of Kyushu island. The city is famous for the view of Sakurajima, the most active volcano in Japan that frequently erupts and continuously sending up smoke from the top. Sakurajima towers high over the bay and you will see its beautiful shape from everywhere in the city. The area around Kagoshima Chuo Station today was an area that developed as a castle town of the Satsuma domain in the olden days, and was a town where many low-ranking samurai lived. Around the Kotsuki River, there are many historic sites that are related to people who were active in the Meiji Restoration, such as Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi. This time, we will walk around the center of Kagoshima City while visiting these historic sites. Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.
THE SAKURAJIMA FERRY:
It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.

Daisy and I took a ferry to Sakurajima Island, just of the coast of Kagoshima!
We ate some tasty mikan flavoured gelato, visited an onsen that looked over the water, and took in the glorious views of the stratovolcano that is Sakurajima. This island is a must-visit if you're in the area!
On the ferry, we tried the very famous tempura udon noodles. It came with a very soft boiled egg and tempura bits in the soup. You must try this when catching the ferry.
Once you arrive, it's best to check out the visitors centre to find out the best things to do. We caught the bus from the visitors centre to an onsen that overlooked the ocean. There are many onsens around the island but the one we visited was best for people who have tattoos.

Start your year with -- a VOLCANIC EXPLOSION! Japan's most active volcano is also a great place for lava trail hiking, hot spring bathing and pure adventure.
Where is this magical volcano you ask? It's down on Kyushu Island in Kagoshima Prefecture (1,300km from Tokyo) and that ash and fire throwing cone is SAKURAJIMA!
You can get there by ferry in 15 minutes from the city center for a ridiculous 180 yen / $1.50, about 4km across the sea.
Sakurajima is famous for island mikan, much smaller and sweeter than on the mainland. The Sakurajima DAIKON RADISH which can weigh as much as 45kg is also well known. It's the biggest radish in the world. (Are you excited yet?)
If radishes aren't enough, there's that LAVA TRAIL and loads of paths for bicycling. Not far away are sea view onsen baths where you can soak up those minerals and long views across the sea.
The Sakurajima Visitor's Center is the place to start your adventure.
Inside, data on the island's volcanic activity and history is all documented with diagrams and videos. There's also a gift shop with some cool things to buy.
I went in the off season (January) but that shouldn't stop you from visiting. It just means you get the whole place to yourself.
The population on Sakurajima is quite old. I met a 97 year old woman who was walking around just fine. She was half my size but seemed to have twice my energy so I think there's something truly magical about this island. I hope some of that magic rubs off onto you as well.
HOW TO GET THE SAKURAJIMA:
It's a 90-115 minute flight from Tokyo (Haneda or Narita Airport)
or a 7 hour trip on the Shinkansen. Great if you have a JR Rail Pass!
Buses depart regularly from Kagoshima Airport to the city center where you can either grab a taxi to the ferry terminal or a bus from Chuo-Kagoshima Station. It's a short ride.

It's 24 hours, departing every 15-20 minutes.

Daisy and I took a ferry to Sakurajima Island, just of the coast of Kagoshima!
We ate some tasty mikan flavoured gelato, visited an onsen that looked over the water, and took in the glorious views of the stratovolcano that is Sakurajima. This island is a must-visit if you're in the area!
On the ferry, we tried the very famous tempura udon noodles. It came with a very soft boiled egg and tempura bits in the soup. You must try this when catching the ferry.
Once you arrive, it's best to check out the visitors centre to find out the best things to do. We caught the bus from the visitors centre to an onsen that overlooked the ocean. There are many onsens around the island but the one we visited was best for people who have tattoos.

Sakurajima towers high over the bay and you will see its beautiful shape from everywhere in the city.

Minamisatsuma (南さつま市, Minamisatsuma-shi) is a city located in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan.
As of May 31, 2011, population data, the city has an estimated population of 39,012 with 18,711 households and a population density of 137.71 persons per km². The total area is 283.30 km².
The modern city of Minamisatsuma was established on November 7, 2005, from the merger of the old city of Kaseda, with the town of Kinpō (from Hioki District), and the towns of Bonotsu, Kasasa and Ōura (all from Kawanabe District).
Bansei Tokkō Peace Museum is located in the city.

Barringer Meteor Crater and Its Environmental Effects. Forty-nine thousand years ago, a large 30 to 50 meter diameter iron asteroid impacted the Colorado Plateau in northern Arizona. The resulting massive explosion excavated 175 million tons of rock, forming a crater nearly a mile wide

Mistastin crater is a meteorite crater in Labrador, Canada which contains the roughly circular Mistastin Lake. The lake is approximately 16 km in diameter, while the estimated diameter of the original crater is 28 km. The age of the crater is calculated to be 36.4 ± 4 million years
this one is elliptical in nature rather than circular suggesting that the Rock hit at the shallow angle rather than straight on like most big impacts even more unusual is that there is a Small Island in the middle of the lake which could be the central uplift of a complex crater structure, making it even cooler
7) Gosses Bluff, Northern Territory, Australia
Gosses Bluff is thought to be the eroded remnant of an impact crater. Known as Tnorala to the Western Arrente people of the surrounding region, it is located in the southern Northern Territory, near the centre of Australia, about 175 km west of Alice Springs and about 212 km to the northeast of Uluru

The "Marines' Hymn" is the official hymn of the United States Marine Corps, introduced by the first Director of USMC Band, Francesco Maria Scala. It is the oldest official song in the United States Armed Forces. The "Marines' Hymn" is typically sung at the position of attention as a gesture of respect. However, the third verse is also used as a toast during formal events, such as the birthday ball and other ceremonies. Western Illinois University uses the hymn prior to all football games. They are the only non-military academy allowed to use the hymn. The university has had permission to use the official nickname, mascot, and hymn of the Corps since 1927.
