Edward John "Ed" Markey (born July 11, 1946) is the U.S. Representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district, serving since 1976. He is a member of the Democratic Party. The district includes most of Boston's northern and western suburbs, such as Medford and Framingham. Markey is the Dean of both the Massachusetts and New England House delegations. He is the second longest-serving member of Congress from New England, behind Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont.

Markey was born and raised in Malden, Massachusetts. He graduated from Boston College and Boston College Law School. He worked as an attorney and served in the United States Army Reserve for five years before being elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he served two terms as a state representative. In 1976 he won a crowded special election to succeed deceased incumbent Torbert Macdonald, and took office in November 1976.

In the U.S. House, Markey is a Progressive representative who has made energy policy his top priority. He sits on several energy committees and subcommittees, and is the former chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming.

Early life, education, and early career[link]

Markey was born and raised in Malden, the son of Christina M. (née Courtney) and John E. Markey, a milkman.^[1][2] He was raised in an Irish Catholic family and educated at Immaculate Conception Grammar School and Malden Catholic High School. He graduated from Boston College in 1968 with a B.A. and from Boston College Law School in 1972 with a J.D.^[3] After graduating, he worked as a lawyer in private practice, and served in the United States Army Reserve from 1968 to 1973.

He was elected to the Massachusetts House of Representatives, where he represented the 16th Middlesex district (Malden and Melrose) from 1973 to 1976.^[3][4]

Elections[link]

In May 1976, longtime 7th District Congressman Torbert Macdonald died in office. Markey won a crowded seven-way primary for the seat, which was tantamount to election in this heavily Democratic district. He has been re-elected 16 times with no substantive opposition and never won re-election with less than 62% of the vote.

Tenure[link]

Markey is a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The National Journal generally gave him a "Composite Liberal" score in the mid-90s.^[5] Since May 2005, he has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post.^[6]

Environment and energy issues

In December 2007, Markey became the first US politician to utilize the medium of Second Life, through which he addressed the delegates of the UNFCCC in Bali as part of OneClimate's Virtual Bali event. It was estimated that the carbon dioxide saved in not flying Rep. Markey to Bali was around 5.5 tons.^{[citation needed]} An example of his legislation is the Waxman-Markey bill (American Clean Energy and Security Act).

Markey's paramount issue is energy policy. He is the former chairman of the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming and the Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Energy and the Environment.

Markey signed the Accuracy in Fuel Economy Standards Act which requires the Department of Transportation to use realistic and rational gas price assumptions as it calculates the maximum feasible fuel economy standards for the coming years as required by the energy bill passed by Congress last year.^{[citation needed]}

Pressure from Markey prompted BP to provide a live underwater video feed showing the oil leaking out of a pipe in the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010.^[7] Rep. Markey also signed the Responsible Ownership of Public Lands Act in 2008 to compel Big Oil to utilize the 68 million acres (280,000 km²) onshore and offshore of public land that they are already leasing but not used to produce energy.^{[citation needed]}

In March 2008, Markey signed the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) Act to direct the President to seek to establish the International Renewable Energy Agency to expand the availability and generating capacity of renewable energy to markets around the world in order to increase economic opportunity, drive technological innovation, enhance regional and global security, raise living standards, and reduce global warming pollution.^{[citation needed]}

Markey has been a longtime critic of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He has been critical of the NRC's decision-making on the proposed Westinghouse AP1000 reactor design and the NRC response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.^[8][9]

In reply to a Sarah Palin piece about the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act, Markey wrote an article criticizing Palin's inaction on global warming and her environmental positions. He said that he agreed that there were many threats to the American economy, but said that her "strategy of inaction on clean energy and global warming" was one of the them. Markey praised the recent House passage of the Waxman-Markey American Clean Energy and Security Act, which, he said, would be responsible for investing $190 billion for clean technology, exceeding the goal set by President Obama. He said that it would be responsible for over a trillion dollars in private-sector capital investment in clean-tech and went on to reject Palin's suggestion that Waxman-Markey was a tax bill.^[10]

Domestic issues

He is also responsible for introducing legislation to change the duration of daylight saving time.

In May 2011, he drafted the Do Not Track Kids Act of 2011 significantly increasing privacy controls over children online.^[11]

Defense

Markey is known for his advocacy against torture and the practice of extraordinary rendition through the Torture Outsourcing Prevention Act.^{[citation needed]}

In 2003, he began to call attention to the lack of security surrounding air cargo placed on commercial passenger planes, arguing that if all passenger baggage is screened for explosive devices, air cargo on the same plane should be as well. In 2007, he succeeded in getting a 100 percent air cargo screening requirement signed into law, which must be implemented within three years.^{[citation needed]} Rep. Markey authored the mandate requiring all cargo on passenger planes to be screened by August 2010, in the law implementing the 9/11 Commission's recommendations. In light of the recent cargo scare, Rep. Markey continues to press that the requirement be enforced and plans to explore legislation mandating screening for air carriers that transport only cargo.^{[citation needed]}

He was one of the 31 members of the House who voted not to count the electoral votes from Ohio in the 2004 Presidential election.^[12]

Speculation of U.S. Senate elections[link]

In 2004, Markey was considered a possible contender for John Kerry's seat in the United States Senate if Kerry were to be elected President of the United States.^[13] Although Kerry lost the election, Markey was easily reelected in 2004 over Republican Kenneth Chase and Independent Jim Hall. Markey was considered a leading contender to run in the January 19, 2010 special election to fill the U.S. Senate seat left vacant by the death of Edward M. Kennedy. On September 12, 2009, however, he announced his decision to remain in the U.S. House, and instead endorsed U.S. Representative Michael Capuano.^[14]

Markey is married to Dr. Susan Blumenthal. He was one of several politicians who appeared in a cameo in the 2003 film Gods and Generals. He played an Irish Brigade officer.^[17]

Rafael Suarez, Jr. (born March 5, 1957), known as Ray Suarez, is an American broadcast journalist. Suarez joined the PBS NewsHour in 1999 and became a senior correspondent for the evening news program on the PBS television network. He is also host of the international news and analysis public radio program America Abroad from Public Radio International. He was the host of the National Public Radio program Talk of the Nation from 1993-1999. In his more than 30 year career in the news business he has also worked as a radio reporter in London and Rome, as a Los Angeles correspondent for CNN, and as a reporter for the NBC-owned station WMAQ TV in Chicago.

Personal life[link]

Born and raised in Brooklyn,^[1] Suarez attended public schools in the borough from kindergarten through 12th grade, graduating in 1974 from John Dewey High School. In 1975 he earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Brooklyn Council. In 2009, Suarez was awarded the Distinguished Eagle Scout Award by the NCAC.^[2][3] He earned a BA in African History from New York University and an MA in the Social Sciences from the University of Chicago.^[4] He lives in Washington, D.C. with his wife and three children, Rafael, Eva, and Isabel. Suarez is active locally and nationally in the Episcopal Church.^[5]

Career and publications[link]

He is the author of the 1999 book The Old Neighborhood: What We Lost in the Great Suburban Migration: 1966-1999,^[6] a social commentary on the causes of the destitution found in the inner city. He also authored the 2006 book, The Holy Vote: The Politics of Faith in America,^[7] which examines the way Americans worship, how organized religion and politics intersect in America, and how this powerful collision is transforming the current and future American mind-set. The book is beginning to gather accolades for its timeliness and fair coverage from many sides of the issue. Suarez was a contributing editor for Si Magazine, a short-lived magazine depicting the Latino experience in the U.S.

Suarez hosted the program Destination Casa Blanca, produced by HITN TV from 2008-2011. The program covered Latino politics and policy for a national audience from Washington, D.C.

He is a contributor to the upcoming Oxford Companion to American Politics (June 2012), and is writing the companion volume to an upcoming PBS documentary series on the history of Latinos in America, to be published by Penguin in 2013.

Suarez has contributed to many other books, including ''How I Learned English, "Brooklyn: A State of Mind", "Saving America's Treasures", and "About Men." His columns, op-eds, and criticism have been published in The New York Times, the Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune.

He co-wrote and hosted the 2009 documentary for PBS, Jerusalem: Center of the World, and narrated Anatomy of a Pandemic, on the H1N1 outbreak, for PBS.

William "Bill" Press (born 1940) is a US talk radio host, political commentator and author.^[1] He was chair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996.

Career[link]

Press has a Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from Niagara University and Bachelor of Sacred Theology from the University of Fribourg.^[2] He started his broadcasting career in Los Angeles for TV stations KABC-TV and KCOP-TV. He has worked as a political commentator for CNN and MSNBC. He is best known for co-hosting CNN's Spin Room opposite Tucker Carlson, and Crossfire and MSNBC's Buchanan and Press.

Since May 2005 he has been a contributing blogger at The Huffington Post. Press also contributes blogs to the online version of Washington, D.C.'s nonpartisan newspaper, The Hill. In January 2012, Press filled in for Keith Olbermann on Current TV's coverage of the Florida GOP primary elections.^[3]

Press was the chair of the California Democratic Party from 1993 to 1996.^[4] He has previously served in different appointed positions such as a chief of staff to Republican California State Senator Peter Behr from 1971 to 1973, and as director of the California Office of Planning and Research under Democratic Governor Jerry Brown from 1975 to 1979.

Radio talk show[link]

Since September 2005, Press has been hosting a daily liberal talk radio program which is broadcast on terrestrial radio affiliates in the United States live from 6-9 AM ET. Originally syndicated by Jones Radio, the radio show is now syndicated by Dial Global. It is also heard on satellite radio, is streamed live from the show's website, and can be downloaded with a podcast subscription. On March 5, 2012, his radio show was announced to be simulcast on Current TV alongside The Stephanie Miller Show as part of morning programming^[5]

In the 2012 list published by Talkers magazine, Press was listed as #77 on the list of most important talk radio hosts in the United States.

Religion[link]

Press was steeped in Catholicism from an early age. He was an altar boy and took vows of obedience, poverty and chastity. He describes his young self as a "soldier in God's army" (CNN Politics, March 28, 2002). Press attended (the Catholic) Niagara University and earned a theology degree from the University of Fribourg in Switzerland.
