Pauri (Hindi: पौड़ी) is a city and a municipal board in Pauri Garhwal district in the Indian state of Uttarakhand.

Pauri is located at 30°09′N 78°47′E / 30.15°N 78.78°E / 30.15; 78.78.^[1] It has an average elevation of 1,379 metres (4,524 feet).

The region has a sub-temperate to temperate climate, which remains pleasant throughout the year.The climate of Pauri is very cold in winter and pleasant in summer. In rainy season the climate is very cool & full of greeneries.

Demographics[link]

As of 2001^[update] India census,^[2] Pauri had a population of 24,742. Males constitute 53% of the population and females 47%. Pauri has an average literacy rate of 80%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 84%, and female literacy is 76%. In Pauri, 12% of the population is under 6 years of age.

The language most commonly used in Pauri Garhwal is Garhwali.

Pauri provides a panoramic view of the snow covered Himalayan peaks of Nandadevi & Trisul, Gangotri Group, Thalaiya-Sagar, Neelkanth, Bandar Poonch, Swarga-Rohini, Kedarnath, Kharcha Kund, Satopanth, Chaukhamba, Ghoriparvat, Hathiparvat, Sumeru etc.Town is blessed to have number of ancient temples such as Kandoliya, Kyunkaleswar Mahadeva, Nagdev, Hanumaan Mandir, Lakshmi-Narayan Mandir etc. Religious gatherings are held in the temples annually. Devotees from all over the town and nearby villages come to offer their prayers. The errand across Kandoliya-Tekka stretch along evergreen deodar trees is worth walking. The Dhara road, Upper Bazaar road and Lower Bazaar add charm to the town.

Lt Col Kulwant Singh Pannu was an officer of the Indian Army and a recipient of the Maha Vir Chakra. Lt Col Pannu is most famous for having led the 2nd Paras in the famous Tangail Airdrop to capture the Poongli Bridge over the River Jamuna on 11 December 1971, during the Bangladesh Liberation war. The battalion was airdropped near Tangail (now in Bangladesh) and tasked to cut off the 93 Brigade of Pakistani Army which was retreating from the north to defend Dacca and its approaches. For his conspicuous gallantry and leadership, Lt Col Pannu was awarded the Maha Vir Chakra.^[1][2]
