Ernest Shackleton
Sir Ernest Henry Shackleton, CVO, OBE (15 February 1874 – 5 January 1922) was an Anglo-Irish explorer who was one of the principal figures of the period known as the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. His first experience of the polar regions was as third officer on Captain Robert Falcon Scott’s Discovery Expedition, 1901–04, from which he was sent home early on health grounds. Determined to make amends for this perceived personal failure, he returned to Antarctica in 1907 as leader of the Nimrod Expedition. In January 1909 he and three companions made a southern march which established a record Farthest South latitude at 88°23'S, 97 geographical miles (114 statute miles, 190 km) from the South Pole, by far the closest convergence in exploration history up to that time. For this achievement, Shackleton was knighted by King Edward VII on his return home.

Erebus Ice Tongue
The Erebus Ice Tongue is a mountain outlet glacier that projects 11-12 km into McMurdo Sound from the Ross Island coastline near Cape Evans, Antarctica. The glacier tongue varies in thickness from 50 m at the snout to 300 m at the point where it is grounded on the shoreline. Explorers from Robert F. Scott's Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) named and charted the ice tongue.

McMurdo Sound
The ice-clogged waters of Antarctica's McMurdo Sound extend about 55 km (35 mi) long and wide. The sound encompasses 2,500 miles (4,000 kilometers) of shoreline which opens to the Ross Sea to the north. The Royal Society Range rises from sea level to 13,205 feet (4,205 m) on the western shoreline. The nearby McMurdo Ice Shelf scribes McMurdo Sound's southern boundary. Ross Island, an historic jumping-off point for polar explorers, designates the eastern boundary. The active volcano Mt Erebus at 12,448 feet (3,794 m) dominates Ross Island. Antarctica's largest science base, the United States' McMurdo Station, as well as New Zealand’s Scott Base are located on the island’s south shore. Less than 10 percent of McMurdo Sound's shoreline is ice-free.

It is operated by the United States through the United States Antarctic Program, a branch of the National Science Foundation. The station is the largest community in Antarctica, capable of supporting up to 1,258 residents, and serves as the United States Antarctic science facility. Scott Base is a base located at 77°51′S 166°45′E in Antarctica and is operated by New Zealand. It was named after Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Royal Navy, leader of two British expeditions to the Ross Sea area of Antarctica. Located on Ross Island near Mount Erebus in the Ross Dependency, it is New Zealand's only base in Antarctica. It was set up as support to field research and the centre for research into earth sciences, but now conducts research in many fields.Pamplona has the Running of the Bulls, but McMurdo Sound, in the southern Ross Sea, Antarctica, has something even more spectacular: the Stampeding of the Orcas. Each summer (December through February) an icebreaker penetrates miles into the frozen sea ice to open up a resupply channel to McMurdo Station, and the killer whales have learned to take advantage of the increased foraging area. With my colleagues Wayne Perryman and Don LeRoi, I have come to gather evidence that McMurdo killer whales - which have distinct color patterning and prey preferences - may be a separate species. To make our case, we are collecting skin samples for DNA, taking photographs, and simply getting to know the orcas a little better in their natural environment. We are 300 feet up in a United States Coast Guard helicopter, working our way along an extended crack in the ice that has opened off the main channel, when we spot at least thirty killer whales in a long, scattered pod. McMurdo Station is a science research center operated by the United States. New Zealand's science station, Scott Base, is located just 5 km away from McMurdo Station. Ross Island is surrounded by floating ice called the Ross Ice Shelf and the McMurdo Ice Shelf. From likely 1957 at the Ross Allen Institute - Silver Springs, Florida 1929 -1969. In the 1970's, the success of Walt Disney World in Orlando hurt attendance at smaller tourist destinations throughout Florida, including Ross Allen's. Ross planned to locate his last tourist attraction, Ross Allen's Alligator Town, close to I-75 and Disney traffic, but died the month prior to the park's opening in June 1981. In his honor, the largest island in Silver Springs was renamed Ross Allen Island in January 2000. E. Ross Allen (1908--1981) was an American herpetologist and writer. Ross Island is an island formed by four volcanoes in the Ross Sea near the continent of Antarctica, off the coast of Victoria Land in McMurdo Sound.
Geography
Because of the persistent presence of the ice sheet, the island is sometimes taken to be part of Antarctica. Its area is ; only a small portion of the island is free of ice and snow. The planet's southernmost active volcano, Erebus (), as well as the dormant volcano Terror (), are situated on the island. They were named by Ross after his ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror. The third highest elevation is Mount Bird, with Shell Glacier and Endeavour Piedmont Glacier on its slopes. Abbott Peak stands between Mount Erebus and Mount Bird.Despite its relatively small size, Ross Island is the world's 6th highest island.
Discovery
Sir James Clark Ross discovered it in 1841, and it was later named in honour of him by Robert F. Scott.Ross Island was the base for many of the early expeditions to Antarctica. It was and still is the southernmost island reachable by sea. Huts built by Scott's and Shackleton's expeditions are still standing on the island, preserved as historical sites.
Today Ross Island is home to New Zealand's Scott Base, and the largest Antarctic settlement, the U.S. Antarctic Program's McMurdo Station. Greenpeace established World Park Base on the island and it ran for five years, from 1987 to 1992.
Claims
Ross Island lies within the boundaries of Ross Dependency, which is claimed by New Zealand.
Wildlife
Ross Island supports a colony of approximately half a million Adélie Penguins.
