Walking through an old growth forest. We found 2 species of salamanders, a pretty sweet looking slug, and lots of fungus and mushrooms. The little creek looked like a desktop wallpaper you'd find advertised online.

Tacoma's Old Growth Forest by Chalo Sulky
Point Defiance Park in Tacoma Washington is 700 acres of conifer forest that is 100 years old. The chinook dog trots along one of the trails on a June day pulling his Chalo Sulky. The sulky has a single shaft over his back that connects to his harness. Brett stops and starts on voice command. We pass doug fir, red cedar, swordfern, huckleberry.

Save Stadium Woods - Virginia Tech
------------------------------------------------------------- UPDATE 8/22/12 The woods are safe for now but administration still has not guaranteed it's longterm protection. We need to keep the administration accountable for the longevity of this rare old growth forest. We need to continue to advocate for the permanent preservation of Stadium Woods in a conservation easement. As a land-grant institution this should be a no-brainer. Visit the Stadium Woods website to learn more. www.savestadiumwoods.com ------------------------------------------------------------- RECAP Hidden behind Virginia Tech's Lane Stadium is an 11 acre tract of forest known as 'Stadium Woods'. This woodland is a rare fragment of old growth forest that supports white oaks over 300 hundred years old. Stadium Woods is a living ecosystem and wildlife habitat that provides vital ecological functions, aesthetic and social benefits, and is a migration sanctuary for bird species from south and central America. The Virginia Tech football program has proposed to clear a 3-5 acre portion of this old growth forest in order to build a 100000 sq. ft., 90 ft. tall, $25 million, indoor practice field. We do not oppose the construction of this practice facility. However, we do believe that the proposed structure can be constructed elsewhere. The Friends of Stadium Woods are asking that you consider signing the petition below to help us save this one last remaining remnant of old growth forest ...

Paul Stamets finds Cordyceps capitata on truffle in old growth forest
Paul Stamets finds Cordyceps capitata fruiting/parasitizing a truffle, Elaphomyces granulatus in old growth forest of Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, USA. Most Cordyceps mushroom species parasitize insects, but a few parasitize truffles. Fungi Perfecti is studying this Cordyceps for its potential health benefiting properties. Paul found this mushroom with Tim Girvin (videographer) and Dawn Clark, field assistant on Oct 30, 2010 deep into a mixed aged old growth forest, with tree succession of 50, 200-400, 400-600, and 800+ old trees. Gorgeous mushrooms and environment. Life at its best !

Paul Stamets and Dusty Yao hunt for matsutake (Tricholoma magnivelare) in old growth forest
Paul Stamets and Dusty Yao take electric bikes up abandoned roads, closed by multiple landslides, deep into the old growth forests of the Olympic Mountains of Washington State to a place of solitude and myco-mysteries. Come with us on one of our mushroom hunts and see what happens. Intention, vision quest, reward.

The Forbidden forests of the Dayak, Borneo, Indonesia
Deep in the remaining old growth forests of Borneo, the Setulang Dayak village guards its forest with deep commitment. To date, the village's traditional law of Tana Olen (forbidden forest), withstands increasing pressure from encroaching logging industries. Now as rapid development rolls in, the village is trying to secure sustainable and forest-friendly future, including a eco-tourism venture and carbon credits.
