My 7 year old was diagnosed with acute rheumatic fever and Sydenham's chorea. This is how it looks at one month after diagnosis. Caveat to parents - don't ignore strep. It's more serious than you think! And a warning - this is a child who is ill. People making obcene or obnoxious remarks will be reported. Oh, and forgive the cinematography - I didn't realize moving the camera would affect the rotation of the video itself - and I cannot figure out how to fix it.

Sydenham's Chorea (aka St Vitus Dance) - Learning to Walk Again
My daughter learns to walk again after suddenly being bed-ridden for six weeks with Sydenhams Chorea, aka St Vitus Dance in January 2009, at aged 6. The illness lasted 12 weeks, getting progressively worse for the first six weeks. For eight weeks she was disabled, unable to control movement in her limbs or face, and speech was unintelligible. We looked after her at home with excellent support from paediatric neurological Consultants at Evelina Children's Hospital and Medway Hospital. Penicillin and sodium valporate were administered. She returned to school 12 weeks after the first signs of the illness became noticeable, in January 2009. The co-ordination of her eyes for reading recovered two months after going back to school, and her handwriting recovered gradually durng the next 12 months. She has now made a complete recovery. There is a one-in-five chance of Sydenhams recurring within two years. **Remember that this video is taken 11 months after I was diagnosed. The movement has decreased A LOT in the past year. Sorry it's so choppy and short. It was hard for me to get through it all. In January 2011, I was diagnosed with Sydenham's Chorea, also known as Saint Vitus' Dance. It's caused by a bacteria embedding itself to the Strep virus, if left untreated. I wasn't aware that I even had Strep Throat, but had been sick two weeks prior. Sydenham's is a neurological disorder which causes violent shaking or jerking of the body. I was unable to remain still for any length of time. It would get so intense that I was unable to walk some days, and definitely couldn't drive. The movement was nonstop, every second of every day for about 4 months straight. The only exception was when I was asleep, at which point all movement ceased. There is no known treatment for Sydenham's, but they did put me on steroids and antibiotics for 3 weeks. According to studies, the only thing to do is wait it out. The fact that I still shake on a weekly basis seems to be uncommon, as most patients are back to normal by the 4 month mark. I have found very little information on this condition, and have observed that this seems to be the case for my doctors as well. When I came to the ER, and even during a few of my follow up appointments, other docs and practitioners were ushered in to the room to take a gander at something they apparently never believed they'd see.
