Özçelik Farm Sakız Sheep Herd
After more than 20+ years in Nature conservation, I decided to do something about threatened livestock conservation. The rare and threatened livestock is so important since they have not any chance to save their existence, other than between the lips of the owner about their life. Most of these rare breeds selected and established their bloodline in about 500-3000 years. But due to the changing of the populations feeding style we are loosing our precious breeds. This is not an issue for only turkey, but for allover the world. Normally, 50 years ago, the people in Turkey was not eating the meat this much (Except some local areas). Industrialized growing of animal was never heard of and all the animals were grown naturally. I mean a sheep was not fed on fabricated granules. Every region had their own livestock races that was selected carefully for centuries for their ability to adapt to their own regions. Together with industrialization, people wanted more product weight instead of product quality from their livestocks. For this purpose general approach in academicians and animal growers mind was crossing races according to their purpose. At that point the loss of purebred livestock races started. This is a pitfall in animal growing. Because if you don't have original race information, you will never get a purebred animal, although you can select genetical characteristics later.
This crossing tendency is still popular for the last 50 years for sheeps in Turkey. Sadly there is no super sheep race developed. But we lost most of our own sheep races. For example if you have chance, you can still observe Slender-billed Curlew (Numenius tenuirostris) at any time. But it is impossible to see any Ödemiş Sheep anymore. Or there is no Etrüsk Cattle today, which carried supplements during the independence war of Republic of Turkey. The worst thing is that the new generations are never known such things. Unfortunately today Turkish people is not able to separate even two white cat race of us. Turkish van cat (which is registered as Turkish Van Kedisi Cat, after wrong registration of a street cat with this name at Cat Fanciers Association-CFA) and Ankara (Angora) Cat can not be separated even by Turkish veterinerians. Because there is not enough scientific studies. In addition to that, people who grows these cats in big metropols, do cross this two breed of cats with each other. With such practices, we lost so many livestock races without even proper describtion.
Considering Sakiz (Chios) Sheep, same situation applies. Two years ago, after I'd read so many reports and records within Turkey, I started to visit Sakiz Sheep growers. After I saw thousands of animals, sadly I understood that we are about to loose this ancient majestic breed. Then I started to establish a family farm which will serve as a sanctuary of purebred livestock races. Last year (2010) I found a man (Mr. İlhan Er) who has been growing this breed for more than 20 years. Also According to some experts within region these are best animals that I can find for buying. After long discussions I bought most of the herd, that contains most of the race's characteristics. I established a breeding program and a remote camera system on the farm. I plan to visit whenever I find time. The animals that I have, caries several, actually many different characteristics of the race. I learnt mostly which gene comes from which region in my travels and after reading many Turkish and Greek articles. If everything goes smootly, I suppose I will get a purebred herd in less than 5 years. We will see :-)
On the other hand, this breed is a precious breed and if money is a concern for the grower, I simply recommend to drop this adventure. As you see (listen) in the movie, I put some songs which are performed by a Turkish singer Melihat Gülses. The most interesting thing is half of the songs are in Turkish, and half of them in Greek language. According to me this already shows that the breed is an Aegean breed and it belongs to the region instead of any nation. On the other hand you can separate this sheep to two different sheep race as Sakiz Sheep and Chios Sheep. But most of the characters are same and best consider it an Agean sheep. On the other hand you can see this sheep race from Cyprus to Italy under different names. For example Florina (Pelagonia) in Greece and Karya Sheep in Turkey are different varieties of Sakiz Sheep. These breeds looks like Sakiz Sheep but has quite a lot of different race characters. One thing that should never be forgotten, is that Sakiz rams in Turkey was grown in historical times, mostly for İstanbul aristocrat people (for sacrificing) and the race characters was always very important since the best animals showed peoples status in city and was very importance for Feast of Sacrifice (Eid Al-Adha), but in Cyprus and Greece the race was only important as a dairy sheep. I am not making any kind of nationalism, but only try to define this
