Western Genre Media Studies Video
www.wcptv.biz For my 5th year High School Media Studies course, I produced a short video along with a presentation to my class on the subject of genre. Come to think of it, it's been ages since I made a talk like the one I did back then. It was something I was quite good at and enjoyed it too. I would be lying though if I said I wasn't nervous as I was very. The Western is a genre of the visual arts in Film, Television, Radio, Literature and Painting. The genre is about telling stories which are set in the latter half of the 19th century in the American Old West. A few of the Westerns are set in the earlier days yet for example the Battle of the Alamo in 1836. There have also been some modern films created but include Western type characters in modern settings, such as Junior Bonner which takes place in the 1970's and The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada set in the 21st century. The Western genre stories usually focus on demonstrating how desolate and hard life could be for American frontier families. Their daily lives were turned upside down where conflict is often shown between the natives, the US Cavalry or between farmers and cattle ranchers. In threat of the Industrial Revolution is mentioned frequently too. The themes depicted in a Western usually involve the conquest of the wilderness where various civilizations compete their territorial rights of the frontier. Themes of honour and justice feature heavily in Westerns although their is no feeling of state but ...

"The Wire", Best Opening, Omar & Brother Mouzone Standoff
Clip from The Wire: Omar / Brother Mouzone Standoff (Season 3, Ep11) One of the best scenes from THE WIRE: Its the opening of "Middle Ground", the pentultimate episode of Season 3. Cracker-jack, classic scene with Omar confronting Brother Mouzone. The dialog is electric, and the director's stylistic references to the "Western" genre is unmistakable, ironic, and certainly not an accident. Just like Omar's wearing of the classic cowboy "duster" is not an accident. Creators Simon and Burns envisioned his character as a character out of the Western genre: A gunslinger with principals. This riveting scene (a typical Wire 'cold open') is here intact with the opening credits for the full experience (Season 3 had the Neville Brothers version of Tom Wait's 'Down in the Hole'). (Tidbit: any James Bond fan will recognize the Walther PPK as Bond's gun too) If you haven't seen The Wire (televisions best series, ever) your life is incomplete goo.gl All rights belong to original owners.

Zachariah (1971) Gunfights and electric guitars in the Old West? You bet! Zachariah gets a mail order gun, practices a little, and kills a man in the local saloon. He and his friend Matthew set out to become gunfighters, joining with the Crackers, a rock band who are also (pitifully inept) stage robbers. Having quickly outgrown that gang, Zachariah and Matthew set out to become bigtime gunslingers. Before long, they part company and a rivalry grows between them. How The West Was Lost (BBC Documentary)
Comedian Rich Hall goes west to find out what killed off that most quintessentially American of all film genres, the western. Through films such as The Searchers, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence, Little Big Man, The Wild Bunch and Unforgiven, Rich charts the rise and fall of America's obsession with its own creation myth - the Wild West. He explores how the image of the cowboy as a moral, straight-talking heroic figure was created by Hollywood but appropriated by Washington, as one president after another sought to associate themselves with this potent symbol of strength and valour. From Tombstone to Texas, Montana to Wyoming, Rich travels across a landscape that is both actual and mythic in the minds of not just Americans, but all of us. With his customary wit and intelligence he unpicks the truth from the fiction of Hollywood's version of frontier life, draws parallels between popular western narratives and America's more questionable foreign policy, and celebrates the real heroes of the west - John Ford, John Wayne, Sam Peckinpah, Arthur Penn and Clint Eastwood. Filmed on location in Arizona, Montana and Wyoming and incorporating interviews and archive clips of some of the best-loved westerns of all-time, the film is Rich Hall's personal salute to a genre of film he feels passionate about.

This is Karma
THEME: This is a documentary about the philosophy of karma. I am into eastern philosophy which I find to have a lot of truth in it. I wanted to make a film that conveys the idea that we are all basically the same. And I also wanted to make an informative film about what karma really is in case people are interested.
FORM: I wanted to experiment with fusing the documentary genre with the music video genre. I also wanted to make a film that in form reflected indian society in all its colour, chaos and diversity. Indian traditional ideas and beliefs, indian classical music remixed and edited trough western eyes to hopefully suit a western audience.

VANS OFF THE WALL SPRING CLASSIC - 2012
The Spring Classic in Varraze opened with the first European premiere of the Bones Brigade Documentary and ended with an awards ceremony that celebrated the diverse styles and talent of some of the best transition and street skaters in the world.
Seventeen different titles were up for grabs at the 3-day event on the Italian Ligurian seashore. Judges awarded technical tricks, old school style, switch skills and even attitude to spread the 10,000 Euro prize across genres and award cash to a crew of deserving skaters.
Saturday qualifiers narrowed the field in the Mini Ramp contest to 20 competitors for Sunday’s finals. The “Cash for Tricks” best trick event gave several skaters the instant gratification of cash in hand as soon as the judges saw something they liked. In batches of 10-40 Euro, cash was doled out with Alain Goikotxea, Guillaume Mocquin, Kevin Kowalski and Dannie Carlsen stacking up the biggest piles of money.
The Street competition awarded prize money to the best single lines in the course, which stretched almost the entire length of the Varazze Pier, shouldering a small line up of surfers catching waves throughout the day. Martin Pek came in first with 2000 Euro for a Nollie Crooked grind down the big rail and a nollie bigger spin over the gap. Nassim Guammaz took home 1200 Euro after landing a nose blunt slide down the big rail and a 50-50 on the down rail over the gap. Kris Vile came in third with 800 Euro for a lipslide on the big rail and bigspin kickflip over the gap.
Saturday night, over 5000 filled the street for an unforgettable concert in the heart of Varrazze. Headliners Turbonegro shook the crowd with their fierce brand of hard core rock n’ roll while fireworks lit up the night sky. Alternative Hip Hop crew Doomtree reached out to energetic party goers through beats and rhymes, with an intelligent blend of showmanship and sheer talent. Italian hip hop samurai Salmo dropped heavy beats and spit furious raps to stir the crowd into a frenzy after opening acts Those Furious Flames and The Peawees started the night off right. Beer flowed, the streets were closed and the typical Italian Riveria was transformed into an outdoor concert venue to write home about.
Vans raised 2000 Euro for local charity Oratorio Salesiani Don Daniele to help underprivileged kids in the area by selling t-shirts and hats at the event.

ABILENE TOWN (1946) Randolph Scott Western
In the years following the Civil War, Kansas is in the middle of a difficult time. Homesteaders are moving into the west, trying to start new lives, and are going head to head against cattlemen who have been settled in that territory for years. In Abilene, one of the biggest cattle towns of the west, the town is on the brink of a confrontation between the cattlemen and the homesteaders. Marshall Dan Mitchell (Randolph Scott), who is the law in Abilene, has the job of keeping the peace between the two groups. For a long time, the town had been divided, with the cattlemen and cowboys having one end of town to themselves, while townspeople occupied the other end. Mitchell liked it this way, it made things easier for him, and kept problems from arising between the two factions. However, when homesteaders decide to lay stakes in the cowboys end of town, that balance is upset, and leads to a deadly showdown.
