Kathak-Classical Dance of Awadh, India
Kathak (Hindi: कथक, Urdu: کتھک) is one of the eight forms of Indian classical dances, originated from northern India. This dance form traces its origins to the nomadic bards of ancient northern India, known as Kathaks, or storytellers. These bards, performing in village squares and temple courtyards, mostly specialized in recounting mythological and moral tales from the scriptures, and embellished their recitals with hand gestures and facial expressions. It was quintessential theater, using instrumental and vocal music along with stylized gestures, to enliven the stories. Its form today contains traces of temple and ritual dances, and the influence of the bhakti movement. From the 16th century onwards it absorbed certain features of Persian dance and Central Asian dance which were imported by the royal courts of the Mughal era.

Traditional Kathak Solo by Anjali Nath - disciple of Pandit Chitresh Das
An excerpt of my first traditional kathak solo performance. A tremendous milestone in the development of a kathak artist. Kathak being a traditionally solo art form, the dancer is required to display skills in the four essential elements - technical virtuosity in footwork , turns and movement, deep understanding of rhythm, beauty and subtle nuance of that beauty. The depth and breadth of this North Indian classical dance is endless and thus, requires a tremendous dedication to one's own study. And that pure joy and improvisation only comes with deep, intense practice called Sadhana.

Satyajit Ray-Jalsaghar - Roshan Kumari
Jalsaghar (Bengali: জলসাঘর) was released in 1958, sometimes released in the English-speaking world as Jalsaghar: The Music Room, is the fourth feature film directed by Satyajit Ray. Based on a novel of the same name by Tarashankar Bandopadhyay, the film is a detailed dramatic study of the last days of a zamindar - a semi-feudal landlord in Bengal. Told with a detail and sense of empathy, Jalsaghar drew high praise internationally (eg Bosley Crowther in The New York Times, Derek Malcolm in The Guardian), and is discussed in the second volume of Roger Ebert's Great Movies as a landmark film in global cinema. The film features an excellent footage of Hindustani classical vocal and instrumental music, as well as classical dance. The musical score is by Vilayat Khan (although the credits for the Sony Pictures Classics video release mistakenly list Ravi Shankar as composer) and several major performers, including Begum Akhtar (first singer; sometimes credited as Akhtari Bai), Roshan Kumari (kathak dancer), Ustad Bismillah Khan and Company, Waheed Khan (surbahar player), and Salamat Ali Khan (second, khyal singer; sometimes credited as Salamat Khan) also appear in the film.
