Why Is Higher Education So Expensive?
It's no secret that US college tuition costs are rising dramatically, and the high cost of a college education burdens young people and their families. How can we make college more affordable? Many suggest that the best way to keep tuition affordable is by increasing government assistance through student loans, grants, and tax credits for education. Professor Daniel Lin shows that doing so will actually lead to higher college costs, because loans/grants/tax credits are directly related to the increasing cost of education. Before we can find any solution, it is important to understand the root cause of the rising prices. Professor Lin finds that increased demand—fueled by improved job prospects for graduates and increased government assistance—is to blame for soaring tuition prices. Knowing the cause should inform our search for a solution.

Leading Voices in Higher Education: David Helfand Lecture
Undergraduate Education for the New Millenium: Starting From Scratch— President of Quest University Canada David Helfand discussed modern problems with higher education and potential solutions on October 1, 2012 in the Rockefeller Center at Dartmouth. The founders of Quest University departed from traditional educational models to design a campus and curriculum equipped for the twenty-first century. Quest has no departments, no tenure, and no classes larger than 20. President Helfand's lecture was part of Leading Voices in Higher Education, a speaker series that is part of strategic planning at Dartmouth.

A Legislative Year in Review
This past year saw some significant bills signed into law and a fair share of vetoes. Legislators worked in a bipartisan manner on many of these ground-breaking initiatives but partisan votes made for some lively debates. Four legislative leaders agreed that one of their proudest moments was when the governor signed the New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act and the higher education bond referendum. Is a college degree worth the cost? You decide.
President Obama promotes the myth that everyone must go to college. That if you don't go, your life will be ruined -- that you will end up waiting tables, or trapped in some other mundane occupation. The truth is, even with a college degree, you may still end up waiting tables, you'll just begin your "career" four or five years later, tens of thousands of dollars in debt. Here is an example of some of the plumb jobs college grads were able to land during the Obama administration. Not just liberal arts majors mind you, but graduates with degrees in mathematics, robotics, neuroscience, engineering, accounting, business administration, economics, biology, communications, graphic design, marketing, and linguistics. Of course when it comes to education, it's not just the Obama administration that deserves a failing grade. For years, politicians of both parties have pandered to students by promising more aid in the form of direct or subsidized student loans. As a result, colleges and universities are freed from competitive forces that would otherwise keep tuition low. Easy access to cheap credit enables students to bid up tuition, benefiting the educational establishment at their expense. Politicians secure student's votes by promising relief from skyrocketing tuition by providing even more loans. Ironically, the loans themselves are the very reason tuition is so high in the first place. Before the Federal Government got involved, college degrees were much more affordable, and ...

Education For Whom and For What?
Noam Chomsky, a world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist, spoke at the University of Arizona on Feb. 8, 2012. His lecture, "Education: For Whom and For What?" featured a talk on the state of higher education, followed by a question-and-answer session. Chomsky, an Institute Professor and a Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he worked for more than 50 years, has been concerned with a range of education-related issues in recent years. Among them: How do we characterize the contemporary state of the American education system? What happens to the quality of education when public universities become more privatized? Are public universities in danger of being converted into facilities that produce graduates-as-commodities for the job market? What is the role of activism in education? With unprecedented tuition increases and budget struggles occurring across American campuses, these are questions that are more relevant than ever.

I'm iInvesting in fair student loans
More than 10 years ago, Shamengo pioneer Felipe Vergara conceived of an investment fund in Chile that would help students, many the first in their families to pursue higher education, to attend university. Students would pay back loans gradually based on their post-graduation salaries. The program has enabled students to successfully complete their studies and find employment, while the investors who bet on their success have seen solid returns. Want to join our community and hear more about the adventures of our pioneers? Subscribe to our YouTube channel & uploads to get a peek of every new Shamengo pioneer as soon as they appear! Scholarslip: A documentary about the student debt crisis
"Scholarslip" is a documentary about the student debt crisis. The 26-minute, student-produced production explores various issues surrounding higher education in the United States, focusing on the increasing costs of tuition, issues surrounding state and federal assistance for student debtors, and the arguably diminishing value of a college degree in the 21st century. Illustrated through the voices of students as well as university and government policymakers, "Scholarslip" highlights critical problems that exist within the university system. The documentary features testimony from an Arizona State Representative, the Vice Provost of Enrollment at Arizona State University and a co-founder of Student Debt Crisis and Occupy Colleges. Voices of students and student debtors from across the nation come together in this documentary to challenge others to speak out about this growing issue. The rising cost of higher education is a struggle for students across the nation, and this documentary gets at the heart of why this crisis affects the future of our nation.
