History underground: The forgotten Baolis or step-wells of Delhi!
A short film on the forgotten Baolis or step-wells of Old and New Delhi, India. Nizamuddin Baoli: Built in the 14th century by Hazrat Nizamuddin Auliya, this step well served as a water reservoir in olden days. Recently, after its 1st renovation in over 700 years it has become a popular hangout for the locals. Delhi houses numerous ancient structures including baolis or step-wells that are now a forgotten part of the city's urban sprawl. While Nizamuddin baoli still has some water in it the others have dried up or even vanished altogether. Those, which have survived the tides of time, are now waiting helplessly for restoration. The popularity of the Nizamuddin baoli is also because of its proximity to the dargah bearing the same name. Although it is illegal and unsafe, many residents have built their houses sticking to the walls of the baoli. With air conditioners jutting out of worn-out walls it becomes more dangerous for the boys to jump in the pool. Rajaon ki baoli: Another magnificent baoli in the capital is the Rajaon ki baoli situated near Adam Khan's tomb in Mehrauli. Daulat Khan built this three-storied marvel in 1516 during the Lodhi reign; which showcases the brilliance of the ancient Indian architecture and engineering. With 12 pillars standing at its borders the baoli is a spectacular structure. The masons earlier used it for some time, which gave it, its name -- Rajaon ki Baoli! What makes this baoli distinct is that its entire structure is subterranean. The ...

Ugrasen ki Baoli
Agrasen ki Baoli (also known as Agar Sain ki Baoli or Ugrasen ki Baoli), designated a protected monument by the Archeological Survey of India (ASI) under the Ancient Monuments and Archeological Sites and Remains Act of 1958, is a 60 meter long and 15 meter wide historical step well on Hailey Road near Connaught Place, a short walk from Jantar Mantar in New Delhi, India. Although there are no known historical records to prove who built Agrasen ki Baoli, it is believed that it was originally built by the legendary king Agrasen during the Mahabharat epic era[3][4][5] and rebuilt in the 14th century by the Agrawal community which traces its origin to Maharaja Agrasen.

Bats at Agrasen ki Baoli in Delhi
A Baoli was an open tank where drinking water was stored, and was also a place where people congregated to socialise in earlier times. The Agrasen ki Baoli is located off the Hailey Road in Connaught Place in the centre of New Delhi, and is virtually unknown to even the locals. It was apparently built by Maharaja Agrasen. And it is home to Bats. What is even lesser known is that it is home to thousands of bats, who live in its cool, dark well area. For more such videos, visit www.kunzum.com, the India Travel Show.

Khari Baoli Market, Old Spice Market, Delhi
Khari Baoli is a street in Old Delhi, India known for its wholesale grocery and Asia's largest wholesale spice market selling all kinds of spices, nuts and herbs. Operating since the 17th century, the market is situated near the historic Delhi Red Fort, on the Khari Baoli Road adjacent to Fatehpuri Masjid at the western end of the Chandni Chowk, and over the years has remained a tourist attraction, especially those in the heritage circuit of Old Delhi. The market came up around, the Fatehpuri Masjid, which was built in 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of Mughal Emperor, Shah Jahan's wives. It was during his reign that the Khari Baoli, with Baoli, meaning the step well, and Khari and Khara meaning Salty, thus it was salty water stepwell used for animals and for bathing. It was constructed along with a fortified gateway on its western end popularly known as Lahori Gate, one of the 14 gates that Fortified city of Delhi or Shahjahanabad, named so because a road through it led to the city of Lahore, now in Pakistan. However, today there is no trace of either the Baoli or the gateway here, which now lies buried under the main road of the market. In 1936, Chowdhary Chhotu Ram, a minister in the Punjab Government made a law which cancelled all the debts of the villagers, thus numerous Agrawal traders lost business and migrated to Delhi and settled in colonies like Kamla Nagar, Shakti Nagar and Model Basti, and took their trade took around the walled city areas of Old Delhi ...

Khari Baoli is a street in Old Delhi, India known for its wholesale grocery and Asia's largest wholesale spice market selling all kinds of spices, nuts ,herbs and food products like rice and tea. Pepper has been used as a spice in India since it was introduced by South East Asia people in prehistory. Pepper is native to South East Asia and has been known to Indian cooking since at least 2 BCE. J. Innes Miller notes that pepper was grown in southern Thailand and in Malaysia. Peppercorns were a much-prized trade good, often referred to as "black gold" and used as a form of commodity money. On the other hand, the term "peppercorn rent" refers to a token payment made for something that is in fact being given. The ancient history of black pepper is often interlinked with (and confused with) that of long pepper, the dried fruit of closely related Piper longum. The Romans knew of both and often referred to either as just "piper". In fact, it was not until the discovery of the New World and of chili peppers that the popularity of long pepper entirely declined. Chile peppers, some of which when dried are similar in shape and taste to long pepper, were easier to grow in a variety of locations ...

Khari Baoli Indian Spice Market Old Delhi India Chandni Chowk
It's like stepping back in time, and you know you are there by the smell of spices and exotic marsala mixes that permeate the air. Khari Baoli is Asia's largest wholesale spice market located by the Fatehpuri Masjid on the western end of the main Chandni Chowk Road in Old Delhi. It's here you will have the unique experience of viewing the whole process of market of loading, carrying or unloading of huge sacks of items from manual trolleys, shopkeepers busy in dealing with the customers, customers selecting large quantities of items and weary laborers resting and chatting aloud. The overall appearance seems to be very chaotic but in reality it is very well managed if kept in consideration the fact that such a large amount of trading of small items are carried out daily. The market has a good reputation for being the best in Delhi as far as quality and price of any item here is concerned. Though it is a wholesale market but still one can purchase small quantities of any items widely displayed on all the shops. Apart from being a cook's delight, the market also sells wide range of other items like household soaps, varieties of rice, nuts and sugar among the many items.
