Partially Examined Life podcast - Chuang Tzu (Zhuangzi) - Taoism
This is an excerpt from a past episode of The Partially Examined Life podcast, discussing Chuang Tzu's (Zhuangzi's) writings on Taoism. You can find the unabridged Taoism podcast, along with dozens of others discussing philosophers from Plato to Kant to Wittgenstein, at the Partially Examined Life website: http://www.partiallyexaminedlife.com
About PEL: The podcasters were all graduate students in philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin back in the Clinton years. They all left the program at some point before getting their doctorates and have consequently since had time to get outside that whole weird world of academia and reflect on it and the various philosophical topics with a different, and probably much more lazy, perspective.

Zhuang Zi philosophy related to Tai Chi and life
In this second part of Master Liu Yongs theory class he starts by telling a story about a fish that becomes a bird and then a god like bird. This story comes from the famous Taoist Zhuang Zi (or Chuang Tzu), It is a parable that describes the process of development in Tai Chi which aims to free your mind when confronted with the pressures of the world. Other books mentioned in this clip are the Tao de Ching by Lao Zi (Lao Tzu), and the Art of War by Sun Zi (Sun Tzu).

About :
Zhuangzi was an influential Chinese philosopher who lived around the 4th century BCE during the Warring States Period, a period corresponding to the philosophical summit of Chinese thought — the Hundred Schools of Thought. He is credited with writing—in part or in whole—a work known by his name, the Zhuangzi, which expresses a philosophy which is skeptical, arguing that life is limited and knowledge to be gained is unlimited. His philosophy can be considered a precursor of relativism in systems of value.

Construction in Zhuangzi 1
The work is based on a modified Lorenz attractor, a three-dimensional dynamical system derived from a model of atmospheric convection, and implemented in the programming environment Max/MSP Jitter. During performance, parameters are modified in real-time. It is sensitive to initial conditions, and seemingly insignificant deviations produce widely and unpredictably differing results. This gives rise to what is popularly known as the “butterfly effect”, where a butterfly beating its wings may produce a hurricane, but also due to the attractor’s lemniscate-shape. However as it is deterministic, the same passage can be replicated by reproducing the same initial conditions.
A diverse variety of behaviours are observed, ranging from periodicity to chaos, that yield interesting results as audio data, either as signal data in nonstandard synthesis or control data such as rhythm and pitch. The visuals are also derived from the same process producing an alternative representation in three dimensions as well as emergent phenomena such as the Moiré effect.

The Butterfly Dream
The story of Chuang Tzŭ.
"Once Chuang Tzŭ dreamt he was a butterfly, a butterfly flitting and fluttering around, happy with himself and doing as he pleased. He didn't know he was Chuang Tzŭ. Suddenly he woke up and there he was, solid and unmistakable Chuang Tzŭ. But he didn't know if he was Chuang Tzŭ who had dreamt he was a butterfly, or a butterfly dreaming he was Chuang Tzŭ. Between Chuang Tzŭ and a butterfly there must be some distinction! This is called the Transformation of Things."
