He was 67.Walker died Saturday in his Los Angeles home after battling liver cancer, his personal assistant told The Associated Press.Walker was born John Maus in the United States. He joined Scott Engel and Gary Leeds to form The Walker Brothers, and they each adopted the surname Walker, though none of them were related. The band moved to England where it had instant success with the song "Love Her" in 1964. The groups other hits included "The Sun Ain't Gonna Shine Anymore," "Make it Easy on Yourself" and "My Ship Is Comin' In." The band toured the world, sold more than 23 million records, and also appeared on many popular British television shows in the '60s, including Ready, Set, Go and Top of the Pops.Walker returned to the US in the 1980s, but continued to tour in England every year as part of the "Silver '60s" show. Walker's final concert appearance was this March in Los Angeles."He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, friend, and artiste," reads a statement on Walker's website. They developed as a franchised spin-off of The Original Pancake House, founded in Portland, Oregon in 1953 by Les Highet and Erma Hueneke; the Walker Bros. version has been in business for over 45 years. Like the original, they are famous for their apple pancakes, French toast, and omelettes.
Awards and recognition
The restaurant was recognized by USA Today as one of the "Top Ten Pancake Restaurants in the Nation." Zagat recognized them as a Chicago's "best breakfast - bar none" and the "north and Northwest suburban family favorite." Chicago magazine presented them with the Critic's Choice Award for the "best breakfast" around. The restaurant has also been recognized by AOL Cityguide in 2006 and 2007 for "City's Best Breakfast" (Chicago). They received the "Gold Cup" from Superior Coffee Company, a coveted award of excellence.Chef and food critic James Beard, who grew up in Portland, named The Original Pancake House as one of the top ten "best" in America. In 1999, the Original Pancake House in Portland was designated by the James Beard Foundation as a regional landmark restaurant.
Walker Bros. is said to have many of the best breakfast items, and is famous for the apple pancake and Dutch Baby.
