Homer: The Odyssey
In the Western classical tradition, Homer (/ˈhoʊmər/; Greek: Ὅμηρος, Hómēros) is the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, and is revered as the greatest ancient Greek epic poet. These epics lie at the beginning of the Western canon of literature, and have had an enormous influence on the history of literature. When he lived is controversial. Herodotus estimates that Homer lived 400 years before Herodotus' own time, which would place him at around 850 BC; while other ancient sources claim that he lived much nearer to the supposed time of the Trojan War, in the early 12th century BC. The formative influence played by the Homeric epics in shaping Greek culture was widely recognized, and Homer was described as the teacher of Greece. Homer's works, which are about fifty percent speeches, provided models in persuasive speaking and writing that were emulated throughout the ancient and medieval Greek worlds. Fragments of Homer account for nearly half of all identifiable Greek literary papyrus finds. The Odyssey (Greek: Ὀδύσσεια, Odysseia) is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer. It is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, the other work ascribed to Homer. The poem is fundamental to the modern Western canon, and is the second—the Iliad being the first—extant work of Western literature. It was probably composed near the end of the 8th century BC, somewhere in Ionia, the Greek coastal region of Anatolia. The poem mainly centers on the Greek hero Odysseus (or ...

2012 Light Show - Christmas At The Western Mall - Christmas Canon Rock by Mark Turczyk
WATCH IN 1080HD!! This christmas light display started out 7 years ago at a residential home in Crooks, SD. While growing in popularity at the residential site, it would generate lines of cars up to 1/2 mile deep with 2 hour waits to see the display. After the owners decided to move to a new home in the country, the show was relocated to the Western Mall in Sioux Falls SD, where it lights up the night and peoples hearts by raising around $25000 per year for the Make-A-Wish foundation of SD. It grants about 5 children's wishes each and every year. Since 2006 it has raised nearly $150000! Even though it's tough to get the scale of this display by watching the video, the castle backdrop used in the display is actually 3D, and is 24 feet tall! The music used with the show is called "Christmas Canon Rock" by Mark Turczyk of Germany. The artist has blessed the use of his song for the display. Watch his video here: www.youtube.com More information about the display can be found at the show website, www.westernmallchristmas.com

The Mercury Theatre - "Heart of Darkness" Part 1 (of 4)
This broadcast was recorded over the air and not in the studio. Hence, the poor audio quality. Heart of Darkness is a novella written by Joseph Conrad. Before its 1902 publication, it appeared as a three-part series (1899) in Blackwood's Magazine. It is widely regarded as a significant work of English literature and part of the Western canon. The story details an incident when Marlow, an Englishman, took a foreign assignment from a Belgian trading company as a ferry-boat captain in Africa. Although Conrad does not specify the name of the river, at this time Congo Free State, the location of the large and important Congo River, was a private colony of Belgium's King Leopold II. Marlow is employed to transport ivory downriver; however, his more pressing assignment is to return Kurtz, another ivory trader, to civilization in a cover up. Kurtz has a reputation throughout the region. Orson Welles adapted and narrated the novel for his Mercury Theater radio show. When Welles signed his contract with RKO Radio Pictures in 1940, he considered making films based on Heart of Darkness and on the C. Day Lewis novel The Smiler With a Knife (1939) before deciding on Citizen Kane (1941).

The Iliad (sometimes referred to as the Song of Ilion or Song of Ilium) is an epic poem in dactylic hexameters, traditionally attributed to Homer. Set during the Trojan War, the ten-year siege of the city of Troy (Ilium) by a coalition of Greek states, it tells of the battles and events during the weeks of a quarrel between King Agamemnon and the warrior Achilles. Although the story covers only a few weeks in the final year of the war, the Iliad mentions or alludes to many of the ...

2009 Stanford University Baccalaureate Celebration
On June 13, 2009, Stanford University hosted its Baccalaureate Celebration -- a multi-faith experience celebrating the pluralism of the university. Speakers from Muslim and Jewish traditions, a Buddhist call to prayer, performances by Stanford Taiko and Stanford's Talisman a capella groups and music of the Western Canon were featured. Ruth W. Messinger, president of the American Jewish World Service, delivered the Baccalaureate address. She called on all to use the skills and resources they have to bring change and justice to the less fortunate of the world. The Odyssey By Homer
Complete read through audio book. The Odyssey is one of the two major ancient Greek epic poems (the other being the Iliad), attributed to the poet Homer. The poem is commonly dated to between 800 and 600 BC. The poem is, in part, a sequel to the Iliad, and concerns the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus in his long journey back to his native land Ithaca after the fall of Troy. It takes Odysseus ten years to return to his native land of Ithaca after ten years of war; during his 20-year absence, his son Telemachus and his wife Penelope must deal with a group of unruly suitors who have moved into Odysseus' home to compete for Penelope's hand in marriage, since most have assumed that Odysseus has died. The poem is a fundamental text in the Western canon and continues to be read in both Homeric Greek and translations around the world.
