Kapilavastu is the name of a region of ancient Shakya kingdom that is considered a holy pilgrimage place for Buddhists. The capital city of the Sakya clan, and one of the earliest republics, where Lord Buddha spent the first 29 years of his life. Here he saw sorrow and pain, disease and death. Then, finally when he saw a radiant happy Sadhu who had conquered all these, he decided to renounce all worldly riches and pleasures to seek truth and embark on the path of salvation. The place holds significant value for Buddhist pilgrims and has several Stupas. The archaeological excavations have revealed stone caskets containing relics believed to be that of Buddha's. These are the ruins of King Suddhodhana's palace.......locals say their are 25 rooms in this section of the palace..........

Sri lanka - History of the Kapilavastu Sacred Relics - 22-8-2012
History of the Kapilavastu Sacred Relics Posted on 22 August 2012. The exposition of the Kapilavastu Sacred Relics is now taking place in Sri Lanka. This is a brief description about the history of the Kapilavastu Sacred relics. These Relics of the Gautama Buddha which are known to the world as the 'Kapilavastu Relics' are from a site in Bihar first discovered in 1898 which is believed to be the ancient City of Kapilavastu. This epoch making discovery was at a stupa site, Piprahwa. Historical chronicles record that, after the Buddha's "Parinibbana" (passing away), the holy Relics taken from the cremation site were divided into eight portions, and handed over to separate groups for preservation. According to "Mahaparinibbana Sutta", penned in the fifth century BC, one portion of the Buddha's bodily Relics was handed to the Sakyas of Kapilavastu. These came to known as the Kapilavastu Relics. The Relics being venerated today were found from excavations of the Stupa Network. President Rajapaksa during his recent visit to India requested Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh to afford an opportunity for the Sri Lankan Buddhist devotees to venerate the Sacred Relics. Accordingly based on a joint programme mooted by the authorities of the two countries, arrangements were made to respond to this appeal in honour of President Rajapaksa. A proper security programme was unveiled after selecting suitable Vihares for the placement of the Sacred Relics for veneration by the Buddhist ...
