Tahrir reacts to Egypt's draft constitution
Egypt's constituent assembly has adopted a draft constitution after a marathon overnight session. Many, including liberals and the Coptic Church, have denounced it. They say the proposed laws restrict freedom of speech and religion. Opposition leader Mohamed ElBaradei has been equally critical. He says the charter belongs in the garbage bin of history. Al Jazeera's Sherine Tadros reports from Cairo's Tahrir Square.

Egypt panel voting on divisive charter
An Egyptian panel is rushing through approval of a new constitution which is at the centre of a political crisis pitting Mohamed Morsi, the Islamist president, against several opposition parties. By late on Thursday afternoon, the constituent assembly, which has been boycotted by liberals and Christians, had approved almost one-fifth of 234 articles. The approvals include a unanimous decision to retain the principles of Islamic law as the main source of legislation. Al Jazeera's Hyder Abbasi reports.

Tourism on Trial - Egypt
For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv In Egypt security problems have collapsed the tourism industry, one of the cornerstones of its economy. As radical Islamists push for strict regulations on tourists, Egypt's population is struggling. "Before the revolution, we used to get ten buses here every hour," a stall keeper sighs. The lack of tourist business has afflicted over 3.5 million people who depend on the traffic for their income. But while they had hoped that the end of the revolution would bring tourists back, there is now another threat looming on the horizon. It may sound bizarre, but the radical Islamist Salafists believe that tourists should only be able to see the pyramids through a veil of wax, arguing "there is a religious decree against keeping them as they are". Unfortunately for the tourist industry, they hold 25% of the seats in the new democratically elected parliament. Under the Salafists public displays of affection would also be banned, as would men and women swimming together. In fact, their decrees would probably force Egypt's most famous beach resort, Sharm El Sheik, to close down. But as tour operator Abdis Salaam says, those in the industry are braced for a fight: "We will stand up against them. We are prepared to create a new revolution if our livelihood is affected." SBS

Morsi's assumption of sweeping powers polarises Egypt
The sweeping new powers that Egyptian President Morsi has assumed make him immune from being overruled - a situation some say is reminiscent of the leader he replaced. But Morsi defends his move as necessary in order to hold those responsible for corruption and other crimes committed during the previous regime and transitional period. Al Jazeera's Mereana Hond reports.

Egyptian Celebs React Violently When Told They Are On Israeli TV
A video featuring scenes from an Egyptian candid camera series is garnering attention on the Internet. The show, created by Memri TV, includes clips of Egyptian celebrities being told they are appearing on an Israeli channel. The video starts with an interview between a female host and actor Ayman Kandeel "Tuhami." Kandeel is friendly at first but grows angry as a caller tells him he's being featured on an Israeli program. The actor gets into an argument with a producer, ultimately assaulting the original woman he was speaking with. In the second portion of the segment, Egyptian actress Mayar Al-Beblawi makes an appearance. "They keep whining about the Holocaust, or whatever it's called," she begins, before being told she is on an Israeli channel and removing her microphone in anger. In the final part, actor Mahmoud Abd Al-Ghaffar is fed the same lie, which incites shouting. Al-Ghaffar yells "You are a Jew" at a producer and hits him about the head. When told it was all a prank, Al-Ghaffar says, "I hate the Jews to death." In finishing the segment, the female host chalks the extreme reactions up to "patriotism."

Talk to Al Jazeera - Amr Darrag on Egypt's 'perfect' constitution
Egypt is in crisis - again. President Mohamed Morsi's decree giving himself unlimited powers has brought thousands of Egyptians on to the streets. Morsi says his decree is temporary, aimed at preventing judges of the former dictatorship from disbanding the assembly writing the new constitution. At the heart of the controversy lies the draft constitution. Some groups feel the assembly that has written the current draft is dominated by Muslim groups. Already secularists, leftists, Christians and even the farmer and journalist syndicates have pulled out of the Egyptian Constituent Assembly. Some of them were hoping the courts would order a new assembly be formed, before the draft is issued. Too late. The assembly beat the judges Friday morning. But it is not game over. It is not clear whether the protests will end even if Morsi's unlimited powers are rescinded. And will people approve a document boycotted by so many factions when it goes to a referendum? And there are questions about the content of the new constitution. Where is it taking the country? What does it say about human rights, the rights of women and minorities and the role of the military and Sharia law? On Talk to Al Jazeera we speak to Amr Darrag, the secretary-general of the Constituent Assembly, a man who left his engineering background to help draft a new constitution for Egypt.

Egyptian president assumes sweeping new powers
Just five months after being sworn in as President, Egypt's leader, Mohamed Morsi, has made his most polarising decision to date. He's issued a decree giving himself wide-ranging powers, including control of the country's judiciary. Now his opponents are calling a for million man march on Friday, to denounce what they say is a coup. Al Jazeera's Peter Greste reports from Cairo.
